"In addition to the Genesis sedan, Hyundai plans to add another luxury sedan to its impressive range of vehicles next year. When the VI sedan hits the market, it will become the most prestigious and most powerful passenger vehicle Hyundai has ever built.

First prototypes of the sedan have already been spotted while undergoing mechanical testing around South Korea and Europe. And most recently, the spies have caught this particular model, wearing heavy camouflage on its front and rear fascias.

The new Hyundai model is being developed under the VI name and will be to replacing the aging Equus model. The Equus has been on sale (in South Korea) for more than eight years and it desperately needs a replacement to rival new Ssangyong Chairman, BMW 7-series and Mercedes-Benz S-class.

The new model will grow in size and is expected to adopt three new powerplants from the Tau engine family. The range of V8 powerplants will include the 4,6L and 5,5L engines, ranging from 375hp for the 4,6L to 450 hp in the 5,5L. A turbocharged 5,0L engine was also rumored to be on its way.

The new Hyundai Equus VI will first go on sale in Korea early next year. Its overseas introduction date was not yet announced, but it is expected to enter the China and Russia market late next year. Hyundai has also been considering to bring the Equus to United States, but recent downturn in luxury car sales could jeopardize its sales debut in the country."

I'd personally love to see the 5.5l or the turbocharged 5.0l tuned to produce approx. 500hp in a Sport version of the Genesis. ;)

Re: Hyundai VI/ Spy Shot (Eqqus replacement)

The Eqqus( pronoucned ay-coo-suh) was a good big luxury sedan in Korea. Looking foward to this VI!

Re: Hyundai VI/ Spy Shot (Eqqus replacement)

UhOh, should I wait for this?

Re: Hyundai VI/ Spy Shot (Eqqus replacement)

I dont think this car is coming to the US. So i am not going to get my hopes all built up. I will believe it when i see it.

oh-oh better change the name for us Westerners. They should stay with the Genesis micro-brand before we get too confused. Coupe, Sedan, ??

Don't worry 2 years from now the economy will have changed. Everyone is not going to go out and get a hybrid tomorrow! You don't develop a car like that and not sell it in the largest market in the world.

Re: Hyundai VI/ Spy Shot (Eqqus replacement)

I would be hard pressed to see this sedan to come to US anytime soon. Sure, Equus was a good car and is one car that most President in Korea use, but I highly doubt this new Buick look alike(yeah, I am talking about its side view) sedan will come to US, and even if it does, it won't be cheap. I have posted a thread a while back about 100K sedan made by SsangYong, the Chairman W, This new car will be a direct competitor to that SsangYong in Korea. Hyundai still has a way to go to get the word out on the current Genesis, and American people are not ready to fork over 100K for a Hyundai, not just yet. Hyundai should be smart to focus their US sales to the Genesis for a while when it comes to the luxury sedan, and for this new sedan, they should rather create a new premium brand in the future and market it under that name instead.

Well, that's my 2 cents.

I've always wondered how to pronounce Equus! Thank you..

I'd love to see this car make it to the U.S. I doubt it would cost anywhere near $100,000.00.. If it's supposed to compete with the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series, it'll have to cost $60,000.00 to make serious headway. If the Genesis is a success, the Equus will made it here..

If everything works out, I hope it gets placed in a luxury brand..

As much as I want them to come to the US so I can buy one , but I don't know how much it will cost here in the US. I hope they price this one right....

I have a feeling it'll start at around $55k or $60k here - tops.. Options may bring it within $20k of competitors with similar features.. All I know is, it'll surely be an excellent buy compared to whatever else is in the market. However, this would probably be their last "inexpensive" vehicle. As they align with their competitors, the prices WILL go up. It's the only way to have the brand (whichever it goes into) be perceived as "premium".

Hyundai VI ROK release Feb-2009

No word yet on US plans...

HYUNDAI MOTOR TO RELEASE NEW LUXURY SEDAN IN EARLY 2009
Sunday, August 17, 2008; Posted: 08:54 PM

SEOUL, Aug 18, 2008 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Hyundai Motor Co. (KSE:005380), South Korea's largest automaker, said Sunday it will roll out a new luxury sedan early next year in a bid to compete with BMW AG's 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz's S-Class models.

The new model, code-named VI, will be equipped with either a 3.8-liter or 4.6-liter gasoline engine and hit showrooms in February 2009, officials at Hyundai Motor said.

The VI would be the "roomiest sedan" in South Korea, a Hyundai official said. Pricing details weren't disclosed.

Hoping to copy Toyota Motor Corp.'s success in Lexus models, Hyundai started selling its luxury Genesis sedan in the United States last month, marking the automaker's first foray into the higher-end car market.

The company has promoted the release of the Genesis as a watershed event that will upgrade Hyundai's brand image from that of an economy car maker.

However, U.S. customers have given the new sedan a lukewarm response. Hyundai sold only 649 of the Genesis models in the country last month.

In comparison, Hyundai's domestic sales of the Genesis sedan, which began in February this year, averaged some 4,000 units each month for the first half of this year. (Yonhap)

I love half-news. Are there even 4000 units (of the Genesis) available in the US yet? Does anyone have information on the US inventory?

Hyundai VI (Equus replacement) not for US market...

HYUNDAI SETS FEB 2009 AS LAUNCH DATE FOR ITS ALL-NEW LUXURY SEDAN

Seoul, Korea, 08/18/2008
- Codenamed VI, new sedan promises to provide the pinnacle of luxury and will serve as a showcase of Hyundai's most advanced technology
- Longer, wider and taller than its predecessor
- Powerplant options to include 3.8-liter Lambda V-6 and 4.6-liter Tau V-8 while a 5.0-liter variant of Tau will follow in 2H
- VI will be sold in Korean markets only

Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, will launch its much-anticipated luxury car codenamed VI in Feb. 2009. The new sedan promises to provide the pinnacle of luxury and will serve as a showcase of Hyundai's most advanced technology.

Promising to provide the pinnacle of luxury and to showcase Hyundai's most advanced technologies, the VI will include among its sophisticated safety features a second-generation Vehicle Stability Management System (VSM2), a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) which employs a vision sensor to monitor traffic lane markers and a Pre-Safety Seatbelt System which on detecting an imminent front-end collision, will automatically reel-in the safety belts to maximize the safety of the occupants.

The new flagship of the Hyundai fleet will serve as a replacement for the ten-year-old Equus (badged as Centennial in export markets). Unlike the front-wheel drive Equus, VI adopts a rear-wheel drive architecture which will make it a more credible competitor against the Lexus LS460, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class--all rwd models.

Longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, VI will measure 5,160mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,495mm in height. VI will come with a 3.8-liter Lambda V-6 engine while the 4.6-liter Tau V-8 will be offered as an option.

The VI arrives in Korean showrooms in Feb. 2009, while a top-of-the-range limousine edition will bow in the second half of 2009 and will feature a stretched wheelbase plus a 5.0-liter variant of the Tau V-8.

There are currently no plans to export VI to the North American or European markets.

Established in 1967, Hyundai Motor Co. has grown into the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group which was ranked as the world’s fifth-largest automaker in 2007 and includes over two dozen auto-related subsidiaries and affiliates. Employing over 75,000 people worldwide, Hyundai Motor posted sales of US$74.9 billion in 2007 on a consolidated-basis and US$32.8 billion on a non-consolidated basis (using the average currency exchange of 929 won per US dollar). Hyundai vehicles are sold in 193 countries through some 6,000 dealerships and showrooms.

Very interesting.. I like the silhouette image. Promising.. I guess if the Genesis sells well enough, this will be the first new vehicle in the luxury lineup for Hyundai.. Maybe they'll name the brand "Centennial"...
