2014 White Genesis, 23,000 miles Clear Coat seperating

It will be bollocks if one reads the fine print of the Hyundai warranty as it pertains to paint and finish. ANd it's like that with most other car manufacturers. I had a Dodge Shadow way back in '92-93, not too long after they started that water-based paint crapola, and it wasn't even a year I had paint flaking off the hood and trunk lid.....but that was within warranty and Dodge made good on it.

If you are in CA you can always look at a small claims action. They can say the warranty is whatever they want, but if the paint is clearly failing much earlier than every other car out there then it is a defect. Go to a body shop and see what they say, if they can verify it was improper prep from the factory just file small claims. Hyundai USA is based in CA too so they won't be able to just not show up or blow it off. CA small claims goes to $10k in damages. This is a warranty of merchantability claim: you have the right as a buyer that the paint will conform to an ordinary buyer's expectation, and paint peeling after a couple years is not an expectation. CA law is very consumer friendly so 95%+ chance Hyundai will lose in court especially if you present your case well.

Thanks for the reply. I am glad they were able to fix your paint issues....
At 153k miles I am pretty sure the warranty (even with my extended) is TOAST!!
Someone hit my car a few years ago in parking lot and the body shop had a hard time matching it too but the end results were amazing.
If my warranty is ok and will honor this bad paint, would it make sense to go back to my bodyshop since they have had experience matching up the paint and ask Hyundai to reimburse me? I may as well have the WHOLE car painted with some quality paint and clear coat. This is ridiculous as I do my best to baby the car as it is.

Here's the deal: (and I put this in a sep thread as well)...we bought our 2012 3.8 new in June of 2011. With it we also purchased the SIMONIZE extended paint and finish warranty. We lived in AZ. Nothing harsh put on the car's finish, etc etc etc. We subsequently moved the car to central OH after 2014 and it's been here ever since.

Fast forward in 2016, just a few WEEKS before the warranty was going to expire, I noticed the discoloration under the clear coat on the front and rear bumpers. I applied for a claim against the paint warranty. I sent photos to Simonize and contacted a local paint shop that the local Hyundai dealer uses, and submitted the claim. They sent out an adjuster to look at it and they accepted the claim (for both bumpers it was rather expensive as I remember, but I never got the bill).... I got the bumpers painted that summer...actually several times because the paint guy had a hard time matching the pearl finish, but he got it, nevertheless. He said the original spotting under the clear coat indicated the surface was not prepped right when was factory painted.

Fast forward to summer 2017 - the clear coat the paint shop used started flaking and peeling. The owner inspected it and was not sure what happened but said he wold make good in it. He go this paint rep as well to look at it and it appeared they had a bad batch of clear coat. So it got repainted again, no cost. We had no copay or deductible with Simonize Warranty and got our money's worth out of it (we never pay retail for any extended warranty). If you are past the Hyundai warranty and have no other extended warranty, you're prob SOL. We also used, many times, the 'paintless dent repair' to remove minor dings and dents that you cannot tell were ever on the car now.

Anways, that's what happened. If you have a warranty, use it.

The warranty we had (through Simonize) was set to expire, so that's why it was fortuitous that we noticed the clear coat issues when we did. I seriously doubt that Hyundai will reimburse you - Did you have an extended paint and body warranty? If so, read it and check the fine print. I know that you can't get it painted then get 'reimbursed' - any claim would have to be filed with and originate from Hyundai...that is, they would have to approve anything beforehand. Which, again, may seem highly unlikely.

My guess is that at this time, you'll prob have to eat any paint costs youreself. Just as I have to eat the cost of a right headlight assembly that has condensation in it, as Zurich says they won't pay to replace it ($1800)...it will have to FAIL before they cover it.

i had the same problem with my 2012 white satin pearl. I had to get the bumpers repainted, the pearl color is a hard color to match up. The paint code is AU and the bumpers will not look like the rest of the car.

Well, I don't know how "Charlie" did it but he DID get it matched, spot on. May be why it took him several tries to get it right. He said he got it matched, and he did not indicate he used the 'stock' paint code, so my guess is that he experimented until he got it right. Anyways, we're very happy with the result and it's been more than a year now and it still looks good.

Front bumper peeling badly, has been for some time. Dealer simply said I was out of warranty for paint. Rear bumper is now getting these yellow spots under the clear coat. Not much incentive to buy another Hyundai.

Yeah man the joy of having a white car. I have yellow age spots too! I would recommend either going to a paint correction specialist or wrap it. That is my next stop. I refuse to go to dealership. KIA Stingers (2018-2019) are having paint issues as we speak. So ya know. Car runs perfect so I can accept.

That's exactly why I added the paint warranty - and it paid off as the clear coat defumglobulated just a couple of months before it expired. As it was, I didn't pay full price for it, I think about 60% of retail, I'd have to go back and look on the contract. But definitely, definitely find a good paint shop. I mean a good one. I used the paint shop down the road from our Hyundai dealer, because, he does all the paint and body work for the autoplex, he came highly recommended from several sources, his work is excellent and prices were spot on good. As I mentioned, he had the car nearly two full weeks as he had to match paint and he wasn't happy with the look. And over a year later, when I noticed the clear coat separating on the front bumper, he took it back, got his factory paint rep there, whom I met with as well, and he took the car back in, and spent an other week getting it right. And it's been good ever since. And I got his guarantee that if I have any more issues, bring it back and he'll make it right. Can't ask much more than that.

As for 'Never buying a Hyundai again", well, that's subjective - simply because with the way cars have to be painted with "EPA friendly" paints, primers, clear coats, this sort of problem is not limited to one manufacturer, and if you check the paint warranty on other car makers, you will prob get much of the same story.

As for dark cars, I have seen many a car with red, dark red, blue, dark blue, gray paints where the clear coat just started to sheet off....prob because you can't see what's goin on down under the clear coat. Such is life.

On my 2014 white Genesis, purchased new on April, 2014 which now has 23,000 miles.I Noticed today 7/24/17 that the Clear Coat on the top of the rear bumper is coming apart. There were also yellow streaks and dots on the bumper that appear to be under the Clear Coat. I brought this back to my dealer and was told told warranty on paint is 3 years or 36,000 miles. I asked about Good Will as I have recommended buyers to this dealer and was told they would submit it to Hyundau for approval. I found out from other sources that this problem exists especially on the Hyundai Coupe, and has been reported on other models. The yellow streaks and dots are an indication of the Clear Coat failure and spread under the Clear Coat. It is felt that this is caused by the bumpers flexing.
I was wondering if anyone has anybody thoughts, ideas etc?.Could this be considered anti-perforation, which is covered for 84 months. Or have there been any recalls on this problem.
ALL THOUGHTS ARE APPRECIATED THANK YOU
My 2014 white Genesis 3.8 sedan is also showing paint peel on the plastic parts (front and rear). The car was manufactured in 3/14, purchased new in 11/14 and began to show clear coat peel in 7/17. I was told by two dealers - too bad - this is not a warranty issue. The quote I obtained was $1250 for the front bumper only. I believe this is a manufacturing defect. I am very disappointed...

My 2012 white Genesis 4.6 purchased new in 2/2012 and also began showing front and rear bumper yellow dots resulting paint peel. I was told by dealer service department they've never seen any thing like this and that was 2016 when this started-told warranty on paint issues were only for three years. Had a quote done it's going to cost me 1,817.00 out of pocket . I also know this is a manufacturing defect particular in white pearl color.

My RSPEC 2014 has the yellow spots and bumper peeling at 52K.

Just got my front bumper refinished, $880 to get rid of the peeling clearcoat. Dealer basically says tough. Rear bumper has the yellow spot issue, not that noticeable, I'll live with it.

A bubble just decided to burst on the rear bumper so now I can see under the paint and see plastic....
SUX SUX SUX
The yellow spots are bleeding under my white wrap on the hood and it is making my ROOF wrap fade. HORRBILE paint as we all should be compensated like they are doing KIA right now regardless of the mileage. I wash and wax my car like no other and still. VERY frustrating.

Nope you haven't perforated the body work and there is obviously no rust.

Crazy that this would happen on a rear bumper. I would understand the clear coating breaking down in the sun on the roof or the hood. The rear bumper makes no sense.
