Running Change - Trunkj Hook & Latch

Visited my closest Dealer (not my selling Dealer) today. Wanted to check on why they don't have the Equus for show, as the schedule says they should. (Another Story)

Was looking at the White V8 they have in the showroom. Same V8 they've had for over a month (with a bump up sticker of $5000 on it - price $47,000)

When I was looking at this White V8 a few weeks ago, I opened the trunk and saw that the opening where the male trunk hook enters was different than my V8.

My V8 has a little spring loaded trap door covering that opening and when the male trunk hook from the trunk lid enters the opening, the spring loaded trap door opens and allows the hook to connect to the latch under the spring loaded trap door. Very neat looking.

When I opened the trunk of the White V8 in the showroom, I could see that there is no trap door over the opening (does not look good with that area open) and when looking down into the opening, I could see a "plunger" which could be something to do with locking the trunk when closing. I could push the plunger with my finger.

After I got home, I got a flashlight pushed the spring loaded trap door and looked under it, and see that there is NO plunger.

I like the looks of mine much better than what that car had.

Next time I go to my selling dealer, I will take a look at some of his newer Genesis, just to see what they look like.

OK, Bob, I went and looked at my trunk latch and I have the little trap door, too. Can you imagine that not having that little door is worth $5000 more?
Me, neither.

I just cannot figure out why a dealer thinks that they can get another $5000 for a car that others are discounting off list, like my dealer, and many others that I've seen online. Are they getting that premium in your neck of the woods?

when I bought my car in 12/08, the LOWEST bump up in South Florida was $1495, the highest $4,995. I ended up in Cocoa Beach (central FL) by accident, and bought it there w/ no bump up

My Production date is September 18, 2008. (Purchased January 10, 2009) I'm wondering if Genesis' made within the past three or four months are different than mine with this running change.

SterlingDave; Not having that little trap door makes it look UGLY.

BTW, for that extra $5000 bump-up, they do give you [1] Mud Flaps, [2] Wheel Locks and [3] Winged Genesis Trunk Emblem. <grin>

Hope your trap door lasts longer than mine. Bought my Genesis on Memorial Day. The trap door has come loose twice since then. Had to remove the sill cover to fix the trap door the first time it came loose. It's all cheap plastic clips under there. The second time it came loose I just pulled it out and didn't bother fixing it. So far its the only thing "broken" on my Genesis (keeping my fingers crossed).

Too tired to do photos tonight. Here's a verbal "picture".

1) Open the trunk
2) Standing in the center of the back of your car, look down at the place in the center of the sill where the trunk latch connects to the sill
3) You should see a hole (about 1" x 2")
4) In that hole is a little flapper or trap door that covers the hole when the trunk is open (you can push it down with your finger and see where the trunk latch latches)
5) That little plastic flapper snaps into some plastic clips underneath the sill (in my car those clips are shot and the door keeps coming loose)

OK, I looked at mine and the production date in October 24. It has two little flaps covering the opening. One flap on either side of the latch itself. I assume that is what you have also. I have had no problems with mine.

Two flaps? Hmmm, that's interesting. I took a picture of mine this morning(attached) and it's a single flap. A cut-out in the flap allows it to clear the latch hook-up loop and the plunger when it swings. Is yours actually two, independent flaps or are you just seeing the cut-out in the middle of a single flap like the one in my picture?

The flap in the picture is oriented the way it was installed. The two protrusions fit into two plastic clips on the underside of the sill cover. On my car those clips do not hold the protrusions firmly enough and the one on the spring side eventually pops loose and then the spring falls off the protrusion and ends up in the spare tire/battery well.

Mine is different yet. Just one flap, and NO PLUNGER under that flap. The photo of the flap is different than my flap. Only opening in my flap is for the trunk hook to enter into the latch.

I.E., Both the left side of the flap and the right side of the flap, are the same, unlike the photo shown. In the photo, you can also see the plunger, which my car does not have.

The car I saw in the dealer showroom looks like the photo, EXCEPT there is no odd shaped flap. Only the opening and the plunger.

Nothing wrong with running changes. Just thought the one in the showroom looked strange without the flap.

The opening in the trunk is exactly what I saw in the dealer showroom. Could it be that the flap already came off that dealer car, while still in the showroom?

What is the build date (posted on the door jam) for your car? My build date was September 18, 2008.

I have to retract my statement. There is only 'one' flap. I thought that I saw two when I looked. I am posting 3 photos of the flap and the hook in the hood. The hook moves from the left to catch the loop on the latch.

More confusing, mine doesn't have the round switch on the right. I assume that it is what releases the latch. There is a switch behind the flap and when it is pushed down by the device on the trunk lid, the latch presses the switch.

Yes, mine is exactly like dond13's, not at all like mcginnpm's.

The one at the dealer is like mcginnpm's except the flap was missing. Could have fallen off like his <grin>>

Again, mcginnpm, what is your build date?

Mine was built 20 Mar 2009 and it was built in the Ulsan plant in Korea.

See TSB 08-GI-002 at www.hmaservice.com for the VIN decoder: 11th character in the VIN defines where your car was built: U=Ulsan Korea, A=Asan Korea, 6=Sohari Korea, B=Bromont Canada, H=Alabama USA.

I'll bet the flap fell off the one at the dealer.

I think the "plunger" to the right of the trunk latch loop is nothing more than a spring to push the trunk up about a half inch when the remote trunk opener in the driver side door is actuated. I can't find any wiring that goes to it. The trunk light and the "trunk open" warning light on the dash are tied in with the trunk latch. When I manually closed the latch with my finger, the trunk light and warning light went out. When I press the trunk opener on the trunk lid, the latch opens and the lights come on.

Bob, dond13 - I assume you don't have the remote trunk release on your cars since you don't have the "plunger".
