  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Good afternoon, I work for a company that is in the vehicle interior reconditioning industry. I quoted a job for a center armrest replacement and was supposed to complete the job last week, After ordering the new cover, I could not figure out how to remove the lid to the armrest. I could have repaired the existing armrest, but my customer actually liked the style of the new armrest I procured as the stitching on the replacement piece matches the stitching on his seats. I am in a bit of a bind as I would like to complete this job. I did discover that there are little clip on "covers" directly under each metal arm of the console lid...and it seems that the mounting arms are held in by plastic "keepers" I suspect. Does anyone know of a how-to video or possibly know themselves how to take the lid off? I have pics if that would be helpful. Again it is for a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 4 door. Thanks much in advance.

PMCErnie, thank you for your help. Unfortunately, the center armrest is a bit different than the one shown in the video. I will see if I can post some pics that I took. Maybe that would be helpful.

Hopefully, John Nance will read this and come to your aid.

Callling John Nance....

anyone figure this out? (arm rest top leather removal replacement)?

Yes I would like to know too. I guess the dye from my clothing or oils from skin is causing the leather (ummhmm) to split a little :(

I have a replacement leather top, and.... I also started a repair (just to see if I could)... and the repair is looking pretty damn good :)

Wow I would love to see a before and after.

Did anyone figure out how to remove the lid to replace the leather cover?

I would also like info as mine has cracked and of course is not covered under the warranty. Its ass rape expensive at the dealership, like $700-900 parts and labor.

You're better off going to an upholstery shop. I'm sure a local body shop would be able to point you in the right direction. I may end up doing that myself.

Yeah that's not a bad idea. To be honest, I never thought about that.

When you lift the top part of the lid (felt tray is locked in the down position) you will see where the plastic hinges attach to iside of the armrest. There is a square plastic cover that you can pry open with a flat tool or thin screw driver. Once open it reveals the screws to replace the top leather part.

Should take 10 minutes to remove and reinstall.

I wish there were pictures showing this repair step by step. My 2012 Genesis Sedan console lid doesn't seem to have the square plastic cover of which you speak.IMG_1791.webp

20 minutes later... I found this helpful video (
) which showed how to remove the lower panel from the cover assembly. I was able to do this with just a couple of screwdrivers and a bit of patience. Start at the bottom of the panel, where the screwdriver blade can get some purchase more easily, and work your way up with your fingers.
