  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

As documented in my previous thread about my failed and unpredictable USB port, I was quoted $440 to replace the USB controller. I really don't want to pay for this as the car is in such good shape and has low miles but is out of the factory electronics warranty. I'd like to attempt to get Hyundai to pay for this because, I think, it may be a head unit issue. I really don't want to chase the problem writing endless checks. So how does one write to Hyundai corporate? Email? A snail mail letter?

Since you are going to have to make the argument to Hyundai anyway, let me ask what they might ask.
What does the car being in good shape and low mileage have too do with your not wanting to pay for the fix?
Why should Hyundai pay for it if it is the head unit?
Why would you be writing endless checks. Either they fix it or they don’t. You don’t pay them for failing to fix it.

Just trying to help you get you reading solid.

Fair enough.

The vehicle hasn't been abused and shouldn't have solid state parts failing when they've had so little cumulative use. And what was so wrong with the 2015 electronics that they won't warrant them beyond three years when newer models enjoy five years' worth of warranty? Did they know they were potentially faulty? Were they not confident with the electronics they were installing that model year? If the USB controller isn't the issue, then they'll have to replace the HU. So $440 for that and then, if that isn't the actual problem, I'll be writing another check for a HU. So, yeah, I'll be paying them to chase down the problem and it's doubtful I'll get any kind of refund for the first repair. So I will be paying them for failing to fix it. I'm taking a chance they've diagnosed it properly. I'm also paying for a rental car each and every time I take it in. This is a real pain - I've only had the thing for three months.

$3k-$4k for a replacement head unit and USB controller? No thanks. I can take that $4k and lease a new LS500 for $799/mo, although I can probably get it for less. I won't spend that much to get a USB port to work as expected - CarPlay is the major reason I bought this thing. If it doesn't work as I anticipated and I have to spend thousands more simply to enjoy that basic functionality, I'll just move on and chalk it up to their Hyundai product being a poor decision on my part.

If it's a 2015, only the head unit has a warranty of 3yr/36k. All other electronics are covered 5yr/60k. If they are charging you $3-4k for a head unit and USB port, they are probably ripping you off. Most radios are ordered through an exchange program and can be bought for well under $1k.

What about the USB controller? Is that considered “all other” electronics? And where would I find info on that?

Yup. PM me your VIN #, and I can screen shot the warranty coverage screen for that individual part and send it back to you.

I'll put it out here for everybody else. I was wrong. The USB jack is only covered 3/36. I swear we've done them before on other models and they were covered 5/60.
