Alternatives to G70?

Since it's getting a lot of press lately: The New 2019 BMW 3-Series Is Poised to Be a Sport Sedan Again

Although early, the gist is that while it's still no giulia, it'll be a big improvement over the F30 series and would likely match the G70 in the sports sedan segment.

However, the rumor is that the new 340i will weigh <3,500 lbs (that's 400 lbs lighter than the G70) with a true LSD and sub 400 hp. You will have to wait until this time next year, but performance wise it certainly looks like it will outclass the G70 in performance when it comes out, and would be enticing especially if they lease well and genesisusa continues its poor showing after launch with terrible lease incentives.

I'm slowly losing interest in the G70 but I still hope they can turn things around soon, as my guess is that they have a very narrow window of opportunity in this ultra-competitive segment.

Cadillac is rectifying that w/ the new, significantly more spacious CT5 which will replace the ATS.

Add in the more restrictive sales network (whatever the tally will be for Genesis dealerships), would not be surprised if the Stinger outsells the G70.

Good point about the rear legroom. Another plus is that it'll likely also have better mpg. Maintenance costs will be higher in true bmw fashion.

The GT2 compares better to a 440i which leases just under $600/mo. For the same down and 10k/yr mileage, you'd save $30/mo on the GT2. I used to work for BMW, they do a great job making their leases look good but most of the vehicles on the lot won't lease for the stated payment.

I imagine Genesis will be looking closely at the 3 series lease, they'd be crazy not to make it better.

Yeah, I've found that BMW leases always seemed to end up more expensive than I initially thought they would be. So far, haven't bought one.

Well of course you can.. . it's an OUTGOING MODEL they are dumping before the new G20 hits. What do you think a lease on a G20 340i will be ?? That is the question and more comparable.

I agree. Driving an x3 now and will avoid run-flats. Heard too many horror stories in the Roundel.

On impulse, took a 2019 C0rvette Grand Sport 2LT for a test drive today. Oh my freakin' word! A claimed 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. 6.2 liter V8 producing 460 HP in a car weighing 3428 pounds. It costs $67,370 with probably a bit of room for further negotiating. A new 2018 Stingray (the base model) could be had for pretty close to the same price as a G70 3.3 Sport AWD.

Car was an absolute blast to drive but really impractical. Ground clearance was minimal with all the aero components. Tires are probably good for about 25K. But oh was it a glorious experience to take that baby down a twisty road and open it up. Pretty much all of the tech the G70 has, plus a few nice touches like a drop-down, in-dash 8" infotainment display that reveals a storage cubby where you can keep your phone out of sight while connected to the system. Could fit more stuff in there as well -- a great place to keep valuables out of sight but readily at hand.

Removable roof panels, gorgeous styling, LED lights, all sorts of cool stuff. Customizable digital dash with performance data displays available. Configurable drive modes that substantially alter steering, suspension, exhaust tone, and throttle response. Just a great drive for a performance-oriented driver.

20" aluminum wheels on amazingly sticky Michelin Pilot tires.

An amazing car but really not a daily driver, even for someone like me who likes true performance cars and doesn't need to worry about a daily commute or toting kids around. I could maybe see this as a 3rd car if I had the money for such things. But as a way to get to the grocery store, run errands, go out for luch or dinner, etc., it's just to dedicated to performance at the expense of practicality.

It did make the Mustang GT (same horsepower but more weight) look like a really practical alternative, though.

If Genesis keeps delaying North Carolina availability, I might succumb at some point. But I'll hang on a bit longer.

Honestly...I cannot wait for the mid-engine Vette. That thing is slowly going into super car territory. They just need to get the interior on par with the other specs.

Which kind of sucks...since the performance Vettes are now out of reach monetarily for most (me anyway).

I drove a 17 vette, loved it. That car handles so well and looks amazing. My only issue was the impracticability aspect. The 18 Mustangs can hang tough though. A Lund e85 tune and intake you will be faster than the vette up to 130 or so. Sound wise, I think the Mustang sounds the best.
Wait on the G70, will be interesting to get your thoughts. I’m going to drive one as soon as my local dealer gets one. No way would I pay anything near MSRP though. In 8-14 months the G70 will be in the same boat as the current stingers with HUGE discounts on the hood. If you pay anything near MSRP you will lose On the back end when you decide to sell or trade.

I guess we will just have to wait an see. Personally I think your logic is flawed. In a year you will be buying is a car that is a year old. Maybe new maybe not. Of course it will be discounted. How much remains to be seen. I don’t think it will be as much as you predict, but time will tell. In the meantime folks are already enjoying their new G70, and you are not. Your preference.

For those of you seeking the 2.0T 6MT but are willing to sacrifice the luxury side for a lot more fun, the veloster N seems like a hoot and is getting some rave reviews globally (shared with the i30N). I can't stand the looks and the asymmetrical 3 door impracticality personally but it's another option available for North America. I would've strongly considered the i30N if it was available in the US along with the G70 3.3T.
