If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. OK this is a side bar thread to the one posted in the 4.6 Tau forum regarding replacing the spark plugs.

Long story short, it was discovered that replacing the plugs was going to be $400 on the V8 due to the dealer stating that the intake would have to be removed.

Well since I have the V6 , I decided to pop the cover off and have a look at how hard it is on the V6 to replace the plugs, and low and behold, it looks like on the V6 the right bank (passenger side) plugs are hidden underneath the intake manifold.

So it looks like the V6 could be a $400 spark plug replacement job.

Me thinks IO will bee doing this myself

Has anyone gotten a quote on a V6 spark plug replacement job on other models using the 3.8 Lambda?

I actually have two threads regarding spark plug replacment. 1 was for my girllfriends 2006 Sonata LX V6, which the intake has to be removed on. Dealer price $450 or so.

2nd was for my 4.6 which was dealer price of $350, which I will do myself.

Your thread in the 4.6 Tau thread is the one I was referring to.

Thanks for the input on your GF's Sonata. So I guess there is no way around removinfg the intake on the 3.8.

So what is the consensus on the 4.6? Can it be done without removing the intake?

I haven't looked yet for the 4.6, but I assume it should be fairly simple. I think I will look today, and report back.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
What is the sparkplug change interval anyway? (I don't have my book with me.)

Intake does not have to be removed on the TAU to replace spark plugs... totally different intake design.

Also, I'm almost positive the Tau and LambdaII use iridium plugs so, under "normal" driving conditions the replacement interval is 10 years or 100k miles. I highly doubt any of us will qualify for what the manufacturers consider "normal" - also, even if the plug can generate sufficent spark for 100k miles, it is not a good idea to leave them in that long. Guess what happens when you try to remove spark plugs that have been through that many heat cycles - remember aluminum head and steel plug.

Just something to think about, usually 60k miles is a good time for replacement.

I responded to the other thread also. The spark plugs that come in the Genesis (sedans and coupes) are unique to the vehicle. You can possibly find them aftermarket but the length and gapping will be slightly off. I haven't been able to personally find the aftermarket ones locally.

That said, spark plugs with the exact specs can (at this time) only be purchased from your dealership or someone who's reselling from the dealership. They are $20-21/ea. +/- what your dealership's willing to sell them to you for.

What does it take to get the intake manifold off? Is it as simple as unbolting it and moving it out of the way, or do you need to remove it from the bay?

On the other vehicles with the 3.8L it calls for just under 3 hours labor and the plugs are $25.00 each.
The BH should be less labor

Is there a video or procedure available to remove the manifold for the 2009-2011 3.8L V6 to change the passenger side spark plugs?
I found lots of info for the V8 engines and the GDI V6 (which I do not know if the procedure is the same).

the plugs from auto zone are $9 each, or better yet Rock Auto $5, dealer price is always ridiculous

I just got all 6 of my spark plugs replaced for about 75$... I purchased myself at Oreily Auto parts cost me 45$... then I brought to a shop of mine that a friend works at he charged me 30$ for labor.. so I don't know what you guys mean by its going to be 400$ or whatever to get them fixed, it took him about an hour to replace my spark plugs.

I believe the correct OE part is an NGK plug #SILZKR6B11. It's iridium and not required to change for 100K miles (160K Km).
They are about $13 apiece.
The ones from Rock Auto etc I believe are made for the V6 manufactured before 05/01/2008 and they are not iridium.

YUP

Dealer wanted at least $300 just to do it. On my year, 2012 you have to remove a good bit of stuff. I ordered from a company on EBAY that was cheaper than Rockauto that dealt with Hyundai/KIA parts.
Since it was my first time doing it on my car, it took me about 2.5 hours. I was being VERY gentle with the removal of parts. I had to get help from friend to push up the manifold a bit so I could SQUEEZE my hands in there to change the plugs. From my eyes the old ones look to be on their way out (to me). I was glad I saved $$$ by doing it myself.

Nice savings, good for you. How many miles on the plugs? I remember cleaning plugs at 5000 miles and replacing them at 10. It was a quick job on the Chevy in-line 6 of Ford flathead. Not so simple any more.

Eh the joys of a modern car, I change plugs on the Supra every couple thousand miles depending on how much racing it sees.

about 110806 is when I changed them (April 2017). Tried to keep in line with the manual / dealer says.

Hi Ambush: I am looking for the procedure to replace the plugs in my 2012 3.8L Sedan as well. NOBODY on YouTube has the procedure. I know the top part of the intake plenum needs to come off but I only see to be able to find 6 hex-head holddown bolts that are very recessed down into the upper plenum. Are those the only bolts that need to be removed so I can raise it enough to change out the plugs? I too have the $300 dollar plug-change blues, but have been wrenching my own vehicles since I started driving in 1973.I just did the brakes on my '12 (Local dealer wanted about $700 to do front and back). Can you provide a more detailed description of how you did it? I believe I need some long hex head wrenches (for ratchet).... much appreciated!
