  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I want an R Spec

you are right hyundai usa has a tsb out, meaning IF not all 12s we get vehicles with oil symptoms there is a proper procedure we have to follow to fix issue.

I bought mine through car max, was sort of hosed on going through the motions with Hyundai. Swapped my engine myself in my garage and now plan on putting new bearings, oil pump and possibly even piston rings in the old motor.

Live and learn with this one for me.

how long have you owned and how many miles ?

At the time of engine failure, i had owned it 10 months. To date, I've owned it a year and 4 months. It's back to being a spectacular car.

The engine failed at 67500 miles. It now is at just over 68500 miles. Replacement engine came from a wrecked 2013 equus with 33XXX miles.

how many miles on chassis ?

sorry that you had to experience that. but
dont believe everything you read on internet im sure Jalopnik did not test out every 12 rspec , i mean obviously they havent tested mine LOL , yes we are aware but if it was serious or that common it be a recall
10 years with hyundai / genesis never replaced a engine on a any v8 4.6 or 5.0 and i had seen a oil consumption once . i been a 12 rspec owner since 13 and my father has a 12 equus ultimate neither of us experience these issues. proves that it does not happen to ALL 12 Rspecs or 5.0 .

MG8, thank the Lord for you posts on this thread. I literally just bought (yesterday) a beautiful 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R Spec..in excellent condition. Silver with black interior, just over 60k. I test drove it 3 times (the last one I drove it like I stole it lol) and tested every gadget Hyundai spoils us with in this car. I then had it checked by my mechanic thoroughly and finally invested in pulling both Autocheck and Carfax reports on her. Both checked out..no accidents, clean title and never left Florida. In fact she had just 2 previous owners, both of which had all maintenance done on time as scheduled at the same dealer the vehicle was originally sold at in Naples Fl.. The 1st owner drove the car for less than 24k in 2 years and the 2nd only clocked an average of 9017 miles per year since 2014. I finally arrived at the conclusion that although not a garage queen, the car is freaking Cleeeean. I feel confident in my choice and I go ahead and buy her !!! So tonight, here I am sitting at my pc, my R Spec resting all cozy in her new garage.. I'm looking at some aftermarket stuff all happy and proud and I think "hey, I'll join a forum". Next thing I know when I input 2012 5.0 R Spec in the forum's search engine.. BOOM ! Oil nightmare thread. I started to have chest pain and stepped outside for some fresh air ! Holy cow.. I caught my breath and came back in. Luckily when I felt well enough to continue, read your comments next. Thank you MG8, I really needed at least one positive voice of reason on this issue. I own my Genny now and her problems are officially now mine. Life goes on.

I will monitor her oil levels closely but enjoy my car.. after all, if (God forbid) it all goes wrong I could always start shopping for a 2013 Equus 5.0 motor... ACK !

congrats, enjoy her!!!!

I mean it was a common enough issue in early R Specs that there's a 38 page thread about it on this forum, as well as an article on Jalopnik that urges people not to buy a 2012 R Spec.

Mine is as good as new after i put in a 2013 Equus 5.0.
Nowhere near as common as the nissan/Infiniti VQ35DE engine. Had one in my old G35 and it was a nightmare. Compression was good via leakdown so the issue causing oil consumption was the valve steam seals in the engine. I ran through about 3 qts of oil every 3k miles. Had to top it off weekly. So this genesis I got burns maybe half a qt in 3k miles. Barely a problem.

Considering a 2013 R-Spec with 97K miles on it. I looked at the CarFax, it seems well taken care of. The vehicle is clean and looks good. My worry is that I don't see any of these over 100K miles. Will it make it 200K? I am just looking to drive it a few years. Can this vehicle go the distance?

Just bought a 2013 R Spec about a month ago. Slightly under 60K miles. First thing I did was change the oil (synthetic), tranny fluid and differential fluid. Changing tranny fluid made the shifting a bit tighter, was not bad before just more solid now. The car is a beast and they do have a good rep for mechanical if looked after.
The engine should see 200K. It is overbuilt for a daily driver IMHO (not a bad thing).

No desire to race. All I really know about this vehicle is that it drives very smooth! But, I do live in the mountains and want to enjoy those mountain curves.
