In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi all. My last car (2016 BMW 340i) had an unfortunate encounter with a curb and 50' flagpole due to the combination of wildlife and slick roads, and is probably going to be totaled. I've been thinking about getting something a bit bigger and that leans more toward luxury than sport, and I love the look of the Genesis/G80.

So I've been digging around a lot, and I think a 5.0 is the way to go. I'd consider the newer G80 Sport, but I'd like to keep it under $30k if I can and that pretty much rules those out since they've only been out a year.

Here's what I'm unclear on with the 2015-2016 Genesis 5.0 models:
  1. Do the 2015-2016 models only have the amber DRLs in the main headlight modules? When did they switch to the thin wrap-around LED strip for DRLs like on the current (2019) G80 models? I really don't like the amber DRLs.
  2. Do all 5.0s have the upgraded Napa leather, or only the Ultimate?
  3. I would really like Apple Carplay, but I've learned in my searching that the Ultimate (with the larger 9" screen) cannot be upgraded to Carplay. If I'm going to give up the other things in the Ultimate package, is the performance of Carplay on 2015-era hardware at least decent?
  4. Speaking of the Ultimate package, I have questions...what does it add? From what I can tell, on the 5.0 the only things it adds are the bigger infotainment screen (is the system any different or just a bigger screen?), a heads-up display (meh), a Lexicon audio system (don't care much...I mostly listen to audiobooks), power trunk (don't care), and....
  5. An adaptive damping suspension system. Is this any good? How does it compare to the "standard" suspension on the 5.0? Does it have any reliability issues? I've read it's $500/corner if it breaks.
  6. Finally, are there any important upgrades when they cut over to the Genesis brand in 2017 that might be worth stretching the budget for?
When it comes to what to watch out for, I've read the other threads and I'm aware of the potential sunroof issues and "flutter" (from the propshaft I think?) problems. I'd probably try to get one that still has factory warranty left on it (or CPO).

Thanks for any help/advice!

First and foremost, I am glad you are ok, sorry to hear about you current car being totaled and welcome to the forum.

Assuming you are in the US, there is one thing to note out of the gate. There is no such thing as a CPO beyond 2016 model (G80).

Also there are very few 2015 5.0 ultimate around, and hardly (if any) 2016 5.0 that was supposed to only came in that trim.

Now we covered the basics, we can summarize the answers to your questions as follows:

1- sorry the 2015 only comes with the orange DRLs, some members have found a way around the issue, but it does require a medium level of effort.
2- All 5.0 have the upgraded Napa leather.
3 - indeed, I have both and only 8” support Apple play.
4 - you are pretty much spot on.
5 - I agree with your assessment as I have driven both 2015 5.0 versions, and the difference in driving dynamics, is IMHO marginal at best and may not be worth any future headaches .
6 - beside the name change, nothing for 5.0 that I recall.

From what you mentioned, the 2015 5.0 none ultimate, is most likely would be the logical choice.

Finally please be aware the CPO will NOT cover the electronics, only the power train components, adding bumper to bumper 10/100k warranty from a reputable company, might be something to consider if you decide to purchase from any Hyundai dealer..

Good luck.

Very helpful, thanks! I see from your signature you've also had a wildlife encounter....

From what you've said, it sounds like the best fit for my situation might be a 2015 5.0 non-ultimate that I (1) upgrade to CarPlay and (2) mod the DRLs to be the way I want (I've done car mods like that before, doesn't scare me).

Everything daviderle said is spot on- I would add when I purchased my 2015 (5.0 non ultimate) the "update" for CarPlay had not been done. I had to work with Hyundai customer service to get the VIN registered to my account to pull down the update. This process took a couple of weeks, and has been documented on other threads. You should not have to worry since the update has been out for so long and should already be applied to your vehicle; but if not be aware.

If you consider a 2016 over a 2015 because of the DRLs, be aware the 2016 5.0 deleted the back seat and rear window sun shades. May not be important to you, but just FYI.

That's a good FYI. I, for one, really like the back seat sun shade, and if I routinely had rear seat passengers, the rear window sun shades would be a concern as well.

Was that sun shade deletion only on the 5.0 or is it ALL 2016s?

The 2016 3.8 Ultimate have the rear windows sun shades.

Brochure for 2016. I tried to include the 2015, but it said file was too large.

Hi, echoing others, I'm glad to hear you're okay! As for #4, the Ultimate also adds adjustable shocks and HUD, the latter I would subjectively consider a must-have feature. My wife's car (2018 Expedition) does not have a HUD and I miss it whenever I'm in it. The most valuable part of the HUD is the blind-spot monitoring that shows up in the HUD.

I love my HUD and do miss it when I drive my other cars without it. I also would not want the package without the power trunk and adaptive suspension just to stream music and audio books with Carplay/Android Auto. The Ultimate system can stream/control Bluetooth audio without Carplay/Android.

I have Carplay/Android Auto in my older Escalade and I do not use the other features beside streaming audio except for the Google Maps and voice commands. My Genesis have a good navigation system and stream audio well, so I do not see why I would downgrade my options just to have Carplay/Android Auto. I use Android Auto, but it is not that great to me that I would downgrade my Genesis for it.:)

Android Auto in my 2006 Cadillac Escalade.

The Genesis ultimate system streaming music. Does the same job but without album art.

You're moving from a 340i to a something than is 2" longer than a 5 series. Just something to keep in mind, because you will feel that extra foot and a half in length. I moved from an Audi A3 and Cadillac ATS. It doesn't matter much because I only do spirited driving twice a year, but I would hesitate pushing the Genesis through tight turns, where it wasn't an issue with the smaller cars.
