  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I checked my owners manual to see what interval to change the drive belt on my 2009 3.8L sedan. The manual states to inspect at several intervals but none giving a actual mileage.
To my knowledge the belt is original with 102k miles and I feel it should be replaced. I inspected the belt and it looks really good with no cracks or potential issues however I would feel at more ease to replace it. Is is difficult to perform? Can this be performed in the driveway?

Below: #1 is the drive belt; #2 is the tensioner. Is a special tool needed to remove the tension? I assume I'll need a socket (size?) for the nut indicated by the red arrow below. Can someone please confirm the procedure?

Thank you!

Can be replaced in the driveway. With modern belts, go by the factory replacement rule of 4 cracks within one inch.

My personal rule is if it has 1 crack, it gets replaced. Otherwise, there isnt a recommended service interval for your belts.

thanks for the feedback. I inspected the belt and I could not locate any cracks. I guess it's good for now. I'll keep an eye on it though.

What's the trick to loosen the tension on the belt?

Theres a tensioner under a spring load that gives the belt consistent tension. Just work the tensioner against its tension (from the front of the vehicle, use your wrench or ratchet and turn it counter clockwise until you see the belt go slack.)
