  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Shoukd trunk open all the way?

I just got my 2015 3.8 Signature a few weeks back and was wondering if the trunk should open fully after I pop it from the fob remote? It doesnt have the auto close option.
You can add trunk helper springs to have the trunk open all the way. I had the same issue with my 2014 KIA Optima SXL. The trunk would only open a little when I hit the trunk button. However, when i installed the trunk spring it opened all the way easy on its own. The trunk springs can purchased on eBay. The springs come in set of two but one was more than enough for the Optima trunk to the point that the trunk lid bounced a bit when fully opened.

The trunk spring added to the trunk hinge of my old 2014 Optima.

The trunk opening on my old 2014 after the spring install. I posted this DIY in the Optima forums a while ago.

I'm wondering if a helper spring would be applicable on the design of the 2015 Hyundai Genesis trunk.
I like the idea of modifying the Genesis trunk to fully open (the existing design flaw are the weak hinges that give out in a relatively short time). In your photo it appears you've attached the single spring to a torsion bar on your old KIA (#10 in left schematic below). Not sure how a spring (or springs) would be utilized in the 2015 Hyundai trunk schematic at right as there are no torsion bars.

I would guess on the hinge arms like on the Optima. I installed the springs on the hinge arm; not the tension bars in my old Optima. On the Genesis the helper springs would help the struts/stock spring open the trunk if there is a good place to mount it like in my Optima.

My 2015 Genesis has the power trunk so i have not done the trunk lid helper spring mod to my Genesis, so I do not know where a good spring installation spot would be on the Genesis.

Note: The tension bars(#10) are also attached to the trunk hinge arm(part #5) in the Optima, hence how the trunk is raised. The Genesis uses a spring(#11) instead of tension bar that is connected to the hinge arm(#8). However, it seems the stock spring is not strong enough to lift the trunk on its own. I would try installing the helper spring on the Genesis trunk hinge arm like I done to the Optima in my photo.

2015 Genny 3.8 AWD with smart truck (so NO power assist)

part numbers ordered

2x Lift Cylinder 81771B1000
2x Spring 79231B1000

replaced and Now the truck opens all the way

here's a YT video of the results

Can you get by with just the lift cylinders or do you need both?
