  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Dang.... That's got to be very frustrating...
It's hasn't bothered me much. I'm the first Genesis owner under the new valet service and Genesis zero cost maintenance program in the area that I'm aware of. They haven't been perfect, but I'm calm in these situations. I've owned other first model year cars and some have been complete nightmares. This little headliner problem is just a minor issue. The Genesis loaner and the valet service is what I signed up for and is very comforting in a situation like this. I'm 4200 miles in and this has been my only problem. The steering wheel was replaced on last service because my dealership didn't want to "attempt" to fix the thread coming out that was loose when they received it. Look like someone has snagged it. I just hope they do fix the headliner this time. Having the limited Design Edition required my dealer to have to search outside the US for the cream colored parts. That's the only frustrating part I have at this time.

I have the popping headliner issue in my late May 2018 build Design Edition. Took it in for repair and they installed a "kit" to fix the headliner popping. Well it worked, but only when the car was cool in the morning. After sitting in the sun with temps over 80 degrees F, the popping is back louder than ever. See my repair statement below. Goes back in to service on Tuesday.View attachment 20311
Thanks for posting the part # J-43980-HMA. Too bad it didn't work, but please keep us posted. If we can put a man on the moon, we should be able to figure this out.

Surprised to also see your steering wheel stitching was coming apart already too? Yikes. Might want to check the Lemon Laws in your area.

I was in the service department yesterday and I asked "my guy" about the noise rattle. He said that "yes" they have seen several cars already with it and that they typically use some padding between the headliner and sunroof casing, which helps a lot but doesn't eliminate it. They can do this without having to take the headliner down. Not sure if I want to try it yet.

Well....they picked my car up at 11:30am and have not heard from them since...... I asked to test drive a new Santa Fe since my wife was interested in the remodeled 2020 and they showed up with a mid-package 2019 model to drive. Taking this back tomorrow and will press for answers. Will start reviewing Indiana lemon law in the mean time.

I don’t have a G70 yet, but did remove my Infiniti G37S headliner once when my garage door decided to roll forward and land on the roof of my Infiniti (long story and no alcohol was involved). My paintless dent guy needed access to pop out some roof dents and I did not want him monkeying with the headliner. All the interior trim pieces that meet with the headliner, roof console, grab handles, coat hanger hooks all get removed. Tedious but not difficult. There were a few Velcro like areas of the headliner that I had to gently pry apart and the headliner came down to rest on the tops of my seat head rest. Paintless guy did his magic and life was good. Not sure I would ever trust a dealer to remove the headliner for they get paid a fixed amount per job code when under warranty so technicians tend to rush when they should be taking their time and being careful.

Agreed. If I had to remove the headliner for anything I would much rather do it than the monkeys at the dealership. But I'm biased when it comes to that stuff, I rarely trust anybody to do work that I can do myself. My theory is I actually care about my car, and I take the time to do things properly and carefully whereas dealers, many times, couldn't care less about certain details. Often they'll fix one thing, but ruin something else in the process.

Well, I picked up a beautiful Mallorca Blue/Grey 3.3 Prestige AWD yesterday. Drove it about 30-40 miles and it was quiet as a tomb.

HOWEVER, I open the sunroof to let some air in today and there's a rattle. Clear as day, exactly how it's been described in this thread. Tried loosening and tightening the screws both on the top of the sunroof track, as well as the ones inside the sunglasses holder at the top of the overhead console. Neither fixed the noise.

I can push firmly on the headliner on the front of passenger side and it will quiet down, so I know exactly where it's coming from. I'm sure it could be fixed by pulling the headliner down, if anything, just to stuff some felt tape in there.

Needless to say this is extremely annoying on a car I've had for literally one day and otherwise am in love with.

Edit: It seems like perhaps I might have fixed or alleviated the noise by tightening the screws in the sunglass holder, or through the power of positive thinking or something. Fingers crossed. I really do love this car, and haven't been this excited about a car in many years.

Congrats on your MB 3.3. Exact color that is at the top of my list only I’m waiting for 2020 models. Maybe 2020 models might have some padding in the problem area? Otherwise, I may be the first one here to drop the headliner to get to the root cause of the rattle if that exists on mine. Rattle noises drive me crazy.

Had mine back at the dealer. They had it for 3 days and didn't work on it. I might check those screws out to see if I can fix it myself. After they did the first fix on mine, there was no noise when the car was cool. After sitting in the sun for a bit and temps above 80, the popping came back. Hope this is resolved soon. I'm holding out on tinting my windows to see if this can be fixed.

It really is an awesome car. Looks and drives fantastically. I know how to drop the headliner, I actually did on my G37 to track down a rattle (ended up just stuffing a t-shirt up there and it worked). The idea of prying off the weatherstripping around that suede headliner and popping everything off on a car that's perfect and new is very unappealing, whether it's me doing it or someone else.

It's annoying because if I could get under there I know I could find the source and fix it, or just stuff some felt tape in the right place. I drove convertibles for about 10 years (Mustang and Miata) so I know all about tracking down rattles.

I'm hoping that tightening that screw or just squeezing on the headliner where the rattle is coming from fixed it. It's possible that it just cooled down a bit too. I drove a few miles and it hasn't reappeared yet, but now I'm paranoid and hypervigilant.

So how loud is this rattle? I'm trying to figure out if the little noises I am hearing are from the sunroof or some sort of cable tapping on the plastic behind the controls in the roof or if I'm crazy and these are just normal noises from tolerances

So great news. I got back my 3 3t sport yesterday and the moon roof sound is completely gone!..
... If you are having the same issue, you need to know how to approach this when a dealer says "they have no idea".. That's just an excuse. I gurantee you they are not as clueless as they act. It's their OBLIGATION to fix this problem. Demand that they fix it and they legally have to. Ask to speak to the service manager and request assistance in a polite fashion and they will help. The dealer is getting paid regardless to fix this issue so do not accept no for an answer.

I'll post the job line from my work order as well as the part #. Show this to them as further proof that it can be fixed!

Hope this helps guys... I work at a dealer so trust me, 20190606_085342.webpI am not talking out my ass

It's not loud at all more like a creak, not even a rattle. A rattle is more of a constant sound whereas the sound I was getting was now and then depending on road conditions

Maybe ur having a differnt issue but to describe it as a rattle would be more of a constant sound like a hear shield rattle. My sound was on and off depending on what road I drove on

How did it go? We just got a 3.3T Sport from Don Valley North Hyundai/Markham Genesis. Thankfully no noise, but it worries me about their service considering the buying experience was fantastic.
They fixed it!

Check out my other post i even attached the work order with the part # under warranty so they surely can fix this.

Their service is severely lacking.. Who sold u the vehicle? David? Or the asain lady ? Lol.. Don't know her name.

Ive attached my part number which did resolve my issue but I am in Canada.

Any follow ups?

I picked up my G70 3.3T Sport about 3 weeks ago. The noise/rattle in the rear headliner area started (or became noticeable) about 2 weeks ago. I've definitely pinpointed it to the rear headliner in the sunroof area. I just called my Genesis dealer and they aren't aware of the problem. I'm hoping that someone will post up a follow up that I can bring to the dealer when I go for my first visit. I DO NOT want to leave my baby at a dealership for a possible extended visit if they aren't sure what to do. I also just had my whole car ceramic coated so the paint is pristine. This car is very special to me and I absolutely cringe at leaving it for "test" fixes if you know what I mean.

The noise isn't heard much with the radio on, but I hear it enough to where I know I want it fixed. I also noticed that after about 20-30 minutes of driving it seems to disappear. Until I drive it again.
You shouldn't worry about leaving your car at the dealer. If you want to have a warranty related repair completed. Your going to have to leave it, besides they will give you a loaner

I need to stop reading these 'Issues' posts while at work because all I can do is stand here and look at my car out the window staring at me and I just wonder, "shit... does mine have this issue as well?" for 12 hours.

To replace the whole sun roof assembly as the shop work order stated seems excessive for a squeak/rattle noise. That seems to point to it’s not a specific headliner issue or something under the headliner like wiring or sun roof drain tubes, but a manufacturing issue with the sun roof itself. Now, in the process of replacing the sun roof if the dealer removed and reinstalled the headliner too, who knows what the real root cause of the noise was then?

Well they tried replacing the clips, it was still making the creak sound so next step was to contact head office have a tech come out and they determined what was needed. I'm glad it fixed. My only concern really.
