  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Oh God... I heard a rattle last night on my way home and feared the worst. Then I remembered my sunglasses were in the sunglass holder and I moved them around in there.

NOISE GONE.

Phewwww

This issue makes me hesitant to buy/lease a G70. Just curious does anyone regret getting a G70 due to this issue?

I don't regret getting the car because the car is otherwise awesome (I MIGHT wish I had the wider tires that come with the Sport, but I wanted my light diamond stitched interior). That said, the issue is extremely frustrating and if it turns out to be a huge PITA to actually get it recognized and fixed, I might change my tune.

I've finally made an appointment with the dealer to get it looked at, as I feel like I've done everything I can in my limited capacity including trying to scrape the headliner goo out, stuffing foam padding up there, felt pieces between panels, etc. I can get it so it doesn't make the noise when I push on the problem spot in the headliner, but it always manages to come back after driving the car for a couple of minutes, presumably from the chassis flexing or what have you. For what its worth, stuffing part of a T shirt tightly up in the headliner actually does REDUCE the noise (I believe because it decreases the flexing in the headliner) but I haven't managed to banish it for good.

Unfortunately, I have a trip to Maine planned in a couple of weeks, and the dealer said I couldn't take a loaner car out of state (should have just not asked and done it in the first place but didn't want to bring a loaner back with 1000 extra miles on it), so my appointment to take it in isn't til the 8/19. Until then, I'm still going to try like mad to make it stop.

Noises like that drive me crazy. My current vehicle - 2017 Hyundai Azera Limited had a similar noise but on my car it was coming from the driver side and passenger side front windows.

Nope, not at all. This can be fixed. And if this is the only issue that occurs, it's minor and no big deal. Not like major mechanical or structural issues. This is a first model year car (well close as Korea had it out for almost a year before US).

3.3T advanced do not have sunroofs. Based on a small sample size there have been no reports of squeaks or rattles in the advanced trim. I firmly believe it's a sunroof issue. Sunroof rattles happened in the Genesis/G80, kia stingers, and sadly now also the G70. It doesn't mean all sunroofs rattle, but consider it a gamble. Some also explode randomly. I enjoy mine without the sunroof but it comes without HUD, 360 camera, and other niceties. I would still choose my trim just to avoid the sunroof and auto wipers

I’ve had sunroofs on all my vehicles, but never the full width whole roof sunroof type. Mine have had 4 to 6 inches of metal roof remaining along the sides. Now I’m wondering if the full width sunroof is a contributing factor to what folks are hearing? If the Stinger folks have a similar issue seems the sunroof design and/or how it attaches to the body would be worth looking at. Don’t have a G70 yet to be able to take a closer look at sunroof or if the glass could be removed temporarily very easy just to test for any differences?

My 2016 Hyundai Genesis had the pano sunroof which is twice bigger than the one in my G70. No issues with it in three years and until now no issues either with my G70. Knock on wood.

yup - def heat related
passenger side roughly mid point - in the area between the sunroof opening and the sun visor well
sounds like a water bottle creak / crack sound

Absolutely spot on in your description! Sorry to hear that you are having the same problem!

Yup, we're all in the same boat, same exact sound from same exact place.

Taking mine in on 8/19

Question/poll about this issue: Since some/many say this is heat related, how many with this noise and or sunroof issue leave your car in the sun during the day, at work or home, any day of the week?
Is it an extended time in the sun?
I park in a garage nearly all the time. Limited time in sun. I wonder what the duration of time in the heat of the day is required.

Mine is in the sun while I'm at work 5x a week, however I do hear it (less audibly) when heading to work in the early AM too

Same, parked in the sun all day at work. I don't typically hear it in the morning, and I think heat alone is insufficient to make the noise start, at least in my case. Once the sun beats down on it for awhile it starts acting up.

I talked to my dealer service manager and the Platinum Tech and they do not believe it is heat related. I know mine isn't because I first noticed it in late April when temperatures were only in the 50s at best. They're saying that based on the construction of the sunroof frame (and components) it is most likely an issue with metal fasteners being loose. And they also DON'T advise stuffing material up there, as some have tried or suggested. Doing that could cause damage of some type which would affect your warranty. And IMO the reduction in audible noise in that case is nothing more than the sound being muffled. Which doesn't solve the actually problem. My service manager wants to reach out to the Genesis regional rep to see if this issue has been reported by other dealerships/customers. They understand my reluctance to remove the headliner. I am confident that if and when I leave the car there for a fix that they'll do it right. I am fortunate to have such a good dealership on the service end. They really want to help me with this, and get it resolved. I'll report more when I hear back from them.

Please keep us posted! Loose fasteners was the first sound that came to mind for me
