If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
2G Genesis Sedan (2015-2016)
I’m having the same issue. 2015 Genesis, rear driver side door will not open from inside or outside. Tried unlocking and still won’t open. Took it to the dealership and they couldn’t get it open either. They couldn’t even get the door panel off to get the door open. They called Hyundai and they told them to break the door panel and the fix the problem. Problem is that then I have to pay for a new door panel($2K). Anyone had better luck with a solution?

do they know way it won't open? is the latch broken, is the lock jammed? or is the weather stripping melted and stuck?

New panel? That's crazy. There must be a way to cut out a portion of the panel and make it repairable for a lot less than a new one. Before letting the dealer hack away, I'd check out an auto upholstery shop and see if they have a more sensible solution.

Another possibility is to see of a locksmith can do anything with a slim jim.

Yet another one to check. How about asking at a body shop? I don't know if they ever run into things like that. Could be their solution is a cutting torch, but for 15 minutes of your time it may be worth asking anyway.

What about the dealer? Could it be a servo in the door that has malfunctioned?

the only way the door won't open is if the latch is frozen. the power lock regulator can malfunction, but any dealer or locksmith can slim jim the door and release the latch.

so the question is, is it the latch that has malfunctioned? or is the door stuck due to the weather stripping. I have already had this happen on my 2018 going a month or so without opening the rear doors in the summer heat and then try to open them and they are stuck from the weather stripping getting soft and sticking to the frame.

the solution was getting into the back seat and while my wife was pulling on the door handle from the outside and then using my shoulder and body weight to slam into the door and give it a hefty push, it took 3 times slamming my weight into the door to release it.

I have the same problem on my wife's Camry in the summer and had it on my Lexus as well, these cars are so well sealed that the door stripping and the frame stripping are so tight that the heat causes them to soften and adhere to the metal they are sealed against.

I'd be willing to bet yours has the same issue.

Took it to a body shop and they were able to get the panel off without breaking it. Bad news for me was that the door latch mechanism was totally broken a cast me $700 in parts and labor to fix.

That had to be 90% labor, The latch mechanism is under $60.

thats a cheap latch.

$55 MSRP
79490-B1000 - Genuine Hyundai CHECKER ASSEMBLY-REAR DOOR,RH
79480-B1500 - Genuine Hyundai CHECKER ASSEMBLY-REAR DOOR,LH

two different part numbers depending on build date, makes one wonder if they discovered an issue with them breaking at some point.

Not really that cheap, about average. The ones I put in my 1939 Hot Rod were $135 for the set (2), and they are not mass produced like the ones for Hyundai. Appears to be the same latch used in nearly ever Hyundai vehicle, which means they are heavily produced therefore carry a cheaper cost to manufacture.

thats the checker not the actual latch and locking assembly.

you're right, I clicked on the wrong link in the parts breakout.

still, the Latch is only $120:

81410-B1000 - Hyundai Parts Deal

not that expensive IMO and when talking $700 for the repair, it is 1/7th of the cost the rest being labor. Which really sucks for the OP.

if he was local I would have done the work for him for a case of beer.

also keep in mind there are two options. the one you listed is latch with non power. the power applications is much more $519.93

Could the power one be the one that comes on the cars with the automatic soft door closer?
