2015 Genesis sedan 3.8 is getting 13.5 miles per gallon city!! The gas is killing me! I’ve had the car for 8 months and I’m starting to regret it!

I would love some feedback if possible on something’s that might be wrong with my car.

This doesn’t make sense. I get 18-20 mpg city and I have a 2015 5.0, a much thirstier engine. Are you gunning it all the time?

Your car should be throwing codes left and right. Have you checked your air filters? Does your car smell like gasoline?

4000lbs car, cheap gas, heavy foot. = low mpg.. just sayin'

I agree.... If no lights, check air filter.

Or you have a brick taped to the pedal - The worst I ever get w/ my 5.0 is 15ish. That's only if I practically idle in traffic all the way home. Usually, it's ~18.

Could be normal. Heavy car, lots of stops, short trips. Takes a lot of energy to get that mass moving. Depending on where I go I get 12 to 14 under some conditions. Took a 30 mile trip on Monday, just rural roads, light traffic and got 23 On a very short 2 mile trip in winter I'd get 11 but then coming back with the engine a bit warmer it would be 14. .

None of us can compare as we all have different driving conditions and habits. 13 for you can be good as you can see from my example. It varies.

I saw a couple of Nissan Leaf for sale cheap. Maybe that would suit you better.

I drove a 3.8 loaner for about 3 weeks. No matter how I drove it I averaged 14mpg city, but after some introspection I determined the issue lay with how pathetically slow the car was vs how far I pushed the pedal down. It would be much more efficient for a 90 year old grandma who is scared of driving.

This is why I test drove both the 3.8 and the 5.0. I Had to have the V8.

I made the "mistake" of driving the V8 first, V6 later. The 5.0 was a "gateway drug", there was no going back....

But I've always ended up getting the most powerful engine offered in anything that I've owned. Guess I follow the fighter pilot mantra "Speed is Life"!

Lol, I'll have you know Sub my 3.8 can certainly 'get it' in Sport mode and moves just fine. Sure, it's no 5.0 which I'm sure goes like a bat out of hell, but I suspect you notice it much more coming from one.

After seeing the gas mileage you guys are getting, I should've gone for a 5.0 but thought I was being economical.

Wish I'd thought to drive one first, or at all for that matter. But I'm good with my Blue Angel. 🥰

Same here. I've never been late because I drive a 3.8 and it will do triple digits. I could not justify the cost difference. I drove 1.2 miles this morning. Would not make any difference what engine.

Like EdP said about the cars weight, it really does take a lot of energy to get that car rolling. Stop and start is the worst. I moved from south jersey /philly area due to traffic. Maybe try taking your car on a road trip and change up your driving habits Dhyde25. I average 28 to 30 with v8, but never sit at a stop light and always drive 65mph +. What kind of shape is your car in? Do you take care of her or just put gas in it?

What exactly does your "city" driving consist of? Are you in stop-and-go traffic for an extended time usually? Do you spend more time idling in traffic than actually moving along? If so, I could see one having mpg in that area.

What kind of mileage do you get on the highway? That might be good info to have to help determine whether it's an engine issue, a driver issue or just a function of your traffic conditions.

Also, how many miles are on the car?

Exactly Ed. I drove 1 mile this morn and all seemed to go very quickly too, lol. ;)

I drive 14 miles each way and my V8 actually gets better mileage than my old V6 Infiniti G. Prob 12 mi. is stop & go and still gets ~17-18 mpg. unless there's a train or something that brings everything to a standstill... then it's like 14.5.

If I'm being good, my V8 gets the same MPG as my old 2011 Sonata 2.0T in the city. Light throttle is enough to get the car going quicker than most cars. I try to stay below 1500RPM.

Try yanking the battery overnight to reset the ECUs so they can relearn your driving habits.

Good thought ! It just might help. I can feel the difference in the way my 5.0 drives now from when I first got the car. It seems as th car learned my smooth easy driving habits. Love my Genny!!!

I just took a two stage trip. The first part of it was very local, stopped at the supermarket, then to another place right up the road. It was only 2.7 miles and my mileage for that portion was 12.5. Had I gone home it was warmed up and may have been a little better. In this case, I want another 20 miles on rural roads, average about 50 mph and only a couple of stops. When I got home my average for the entire trip was 25.2.

As you can tell, the type of driving, the number of starts, how warm the engine is makes a huge difference. It may not be the car, it may be your driving conditions.

I concur Mr EdP, just bringing engine up to operating temp is a big factor, along with the weight of the car and getting it moving from a stop . Takes more energy!!

With my V6 in mixed heavy metro driving, I most often show around an average of 20 mpg. Freeway trips recently have been about 25 mpg. That said, my Porsche routinely gets 30-33 mpg on long trips, but as said in many of these posts, the Genesis is a heavy car. But an equally enjoyable drive for other reasons.

City mpg numbers mean nothing, zilch, zero. Cannot compare one to the other. Example: Live in "city" in Buckwheat, Idaho. Two stoplights. May get 20 mpg or more. Live in land of the freaks (LA), stand and go all day, may get 5 mpg. Both are "city", because they're not "highway". Only true measure of mpg is highway, and only when flat, and no wind, and when comparing at same/similar speed, temperature and humidity.
