  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What do you guys/gals think of the Genesis safety rating from IIHS? There was some airbag issues in the first models and was thinking about all of us who have swapped out the "H" for the "Wings" airbag. Does anyone know if there is a way to check the manufactures date or model numbers?

This has been covered before, but Made in December 2008 or later you have a 5 star rating.

Check your drivers side door jam for manufacter date.

Thanks for the response.

I was more-so asking what people thought about swapping out the airbag for the "Winged" one. All the winged airbags are coming from Korea and was wondering what their rating is/was and if they possibly had a recall over there as well. I'd hate to have the old airbag installed for the pure reason of aesthetics.

There are not differences in the KDM airbag or the american airbag. Same product, different emblem.

According to my dealer, and from what I remember, the only airbag recall on the Genesis was the side airbag for the driver, which was corrected in 20 minutes at the dealer. I know nothing about the steering wheel airbag having a recall.

Two tests of the Genesis were conducted. In the first test, the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag, producing a high head acceleration. Also, forces on the dummy's right lower leg, knee, and foot indicated that injuries would be likely to the leg and possible to the knee and foot. In response, Hyundai modified the airbag and added padding behind the knee bolster in the area of the push-button ignition switch. In the second test, the right leg/foot injury rating improved to Good. Most injury data from the head were not obtained, but after the Institute reviewed comparable test data from Hyundai, the head/neck injury risk was rated Good in the second test.

The airbag and knee bolster modifications apply to all 2009 and later models manufactured after November 2008 (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door). The cars manufactured before and after being modified are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for both vehicles are based on both Institute tests.

A modification was made to the airbag according to this. I just wonder what it was...

The Hyundai MOBIS sticker says M0909. Wondering if that is September '09?...

As far as I can tell, the airbag for pre Dec 09 sedans was corrected via a TSB that changed the airbag program to fire sooner to keep the head from hitting the steering wheel by inflating the bag sooner. Don't think that anything was done with the knee padding or the airbag itself.
