Cracked Dash

First off, I did try and search this topic and didn't find exactly the answers I was looking for thus why I'm posting.

I own a 09 4.6 White exterior Tan interior fully loaded with the tech package. I have owned it since new and never used armorall on the dash since I have heard/seen that over time it will/can cause it to crack. Just the other day I noticed there is a crack right above the passenger side air bag.

My question to all our members here is, has anyone else had this crack happen to their car in the same location?

My thought process here is this is a factory deigned weak spot on the dash should the airbag need to be deployed and with the heat from the Florida sun over the years it caused it to get weak and just crack right on that line.

You are absolutely right. I had this with 2008 Azera Ltd before I bought Genesis. It was design defect and dash was replaced at the dealership under warranty.

Same thing here. I have a 4.6 2010 with 91k. Cracked dashboard that happened in the Florida heat here a couple of months ago when I left the car outside for a couple of days without starting it. I always keep the car outside. This car drives great but it's a pos. I wash and wax regularly and I have paint coming off the grill, door handles, and the material is coming off my wheels and now a crack in the passenger dashboard. I asked the dealership if the car is safe and they said yes. You get what you pay for. Hyundai is trying to make a cheaper product, and it shows.

You are absolutely right. I had this with 2008 Azera Ltd before I bought Genesis. It was design defect and dash was replaced at the dealership under warranty.

Thank you for this information, I should also add that this car has always been garage when I'm not driving it. I have to take it up to the dealers to have then look it over since I have talked to them over the phone. I was told they might not cover it since it's "cosmetic damage". I'm concerned that if something bad where to happen and the air back needed to go off with this crack in the dash already could cause it not to work properly.

My 2009 was cracked when I traded it in almost four years ago. It sat in the south Florida sun every day.

I too have an 09 Genny 4.6 with Tech package. My dash board crack began with a small fissure along the air bag and grew to encircle the entire airbag. ( while the dealer let it sit on their lot for three months while being repaired with out washing, or covering)The dealer just ignored the problem and it grew worse still. Is this a danger in case of accident ?

2012 genesis r spec also have this issue at San Diego, 95000 miles. this is a cheap car, the chrome defects and labels have bubbles, glass rubber seal deshaped (bottom line of the back windshield glass). totally agree you get what you paid for. dirty cheap hyundai.

If I lived in San Diego or other sun filled area, and I parked my car outside, I'd use a sunshade to protect my dash.

If I parked my car outside, in San Diego or LA, I'd use a sunshade.

Daily driver with ample sun and stupid heat here, so I park under a shade tree at work most days. Other days I use a $20 sunshade. No issues with my 7-1/2 year old 2012... and never had an issue with the '09 when I owned it. Sure my DD gets bird cr@p, leaf litter, pollen and other stuff on it when parked under a tree 9-10 hours/day, but rainy days take care of it half the year and I can get out the wash bucket and use Reload or other spray coatings on the weekends for the rest.

Wife's parks her DD '07 Solara outside in the sun all day w/ no sunshade. Dash cracked all to hell years ago, w/ dozens of cracks all over. Toyota replaced it for free (out of warranty) due to a campain they ran for original owners with what is a common issue on those cars.

IMO, dash cracks aren't common on our cars, but of course YMMV with the conditions the car is kept. $20 for a sunshade is cheap insurance.

sorry to hear that , i live in the desert in Las Vegas and have no issues what so ever, but this happens to every car when sits in sun with no protection.

thanks for all above suggestions and replies. I believe cars are made for different weathers like sunny days, raining days, snowing days, hot places and cold places. San Diego weather is way better than north side areas like Chicago or even Alaska. Yes you can baby your Genesis and keep in garage, using sun shades even car covers, however, as a high quality car, it is suppose to be strong enough to survive at places warm as San Diego. I used to have a 2010 VW GOLF, and i bought new and drove to 2017 with almost 70000 miles at IOWA. Dashboard was still like the day i bought it. IOWA definitely has more sever weather than San Diego, right?

You might also look into getting ceramic window tint done on the windshield. Ceramic tinting the whole car does wonders for reducing the heat buildup inside.

I have the Llumar AIR 80 on my windshield + I use sunshade all of the time here in the Carolinas and the damn dash still cracks on the passenger side right over the airbag! I have a PPWrap warranty do you think they will cover it or would my 2012 be too old to worry about it? It is ugly as heck. Passenger thinks I did it or my car is cheap.

It depends on how much you want to do yourself and if you can find someone to do the work reasonably enough, but you could always search online junkyards for the dashboard and replace yours.

Naw replacing the dash is a MONSTER! I took the dash out of my 3rd gen 4runner and I hated every moment. Took me 3 days to get it back in. Not sure how to fix it cosmetically at all. it is a horrible design flaw.

My 2011 Genesis (black exterior with black interior) developed a crack on the dash on the right side of the passenger airbag last summer, followed a few months later by a symmetrical crack on the left side of that airbag. My 100K mile/10 Year warranty is still in effect, but the Louisiana dealership said the warranty only covers mechanical defects and not finishes. They assured me the cracks would not affect the airbag's function. I love my Genesis but absolutely hate that cracked dash! If I purchase another one, I probably won't buy one with a black interior.
