If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi,
So I have mentioned this in various threads but I do have some clatter from one cylinder bank. I have a 2015 5.0.

It is usually present, sometimes not. My buddy (who is very knowledgeable with cars) has said it's likely the hydraulic lash adjusters not working properly. he said it typically involves taking off the valve covers and is not too hard to do.
However, I looked at my factory manual and it says the transmission needs to be removed to do this job. That makes no sense to me as the lifters are accessed from the top end. I can see taking off the intake manifold but not the transmission.

Has anyone had to have lifters (i.e., lash adjusters) replaced before and if so, how much was it? I have an extended warranty that's supposed to cover internal engine lubricated components, but the warranty is from Ford and they have been proper ba$tards in the past. Suburbanzine, do you have any thoughts?
Thanks.

If you actually have hydraulic valve lifters vs solid, unless really high mileage or lack of oil changes, they usually don’t cause clatter. Solid lifters which are more prone to cause valve clatter which is what my Genesis has, some have said are a real pain to change out and replace. Those have to be replaced with the exact length needed to ensure proper valve clearance.

So they are the valves are non adjustable?

The V6 has solid tappets. (I assume the V8 is the same) Valve lash is adjusted by changing the tappet height (thickness). Available from 3.000mm to 3.600mm in .015mm increments.

Don't know... but could a fuel injector be making noise?

If a cam lobe or tappet were worn to the point of excessive clearance, you'd think it would make noise all the time.

Checking the valve lash would be a bit of a project. I seriously doubt it would require removing the trans or intake manifold, but quite a few parts have to come off before getting to the cam cover. Changing the lash even more work... pulling the cam, loosening the timing chain, figuring out the proper tappet and then getting the cam and chain timed properly.

Yes, the shop manual makes it look like a real ba$tard. Please see picture below. Has anyone had to have their HLAs replaced? I would have thought it would be under an extended warranty, which in my case is supposed to extend to lubricated engine components.

Odd the manual says to remove transmission? Once you get the solid lifter out, measuring so you know exactly what to replace it with seems the next hassle? I’m guessing on a cold engine there should be .xxx clearance? Anything over that amount you order the correct length lifter to reinstall.

Looks like I assumed wrong. The 5.0L does have hydraulic adjusters along with rocker arms. I wonder why they decided to opt for solid lifters on the 3.8?

That does look like a ba$yard. Why the trans removal? I dont understand that one?
