Remember that this car has something like 55 modules, and a lot of working on this car is using the Hyundai GDS system. If you're an Auto tech or are super comfortable working with scan tools, you can buy a Chinese knockoff for $200 - otherwise, I think it's at least $2000 + yearly license fees for a genuine Hyundai
scan tool. I'm not even sure non-dealers can buy the tool, but others can comment.
If the head unit goes, that's a $2500 part. if the display goes, that's a $2500 part, and there numerous threads here about head units going, including mine.
If you get rear ended and the rear cross traffic alert sensors get damaged, that's a lot. If you bump something and the radar cruise control module gets damaged, that's at least $3000 (I think). Fobs cost at least $400 to buy and get programmed.
For a guy like me (late 40s, experienced at moderate wrenching, but worried about frying electronics), this is a dealer-only car. I can do oil, brakes,
plugs, suspension, stuff like that.
You can probably pick used modules up on ebay, but you still have to program them using the GDS. It's not plug and play. I would not buy this car without either having a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty, or have at least $4-5000 earmarked for car repairs. And I would definitely have the engine oil analyzed and get a thorough PPI. The folks on this board have heard this ad nauseum, but I bought my car from a big dealer, and only a month after I bought it did I realize that it had been in an unreported rear end collision. I simply didn't think to check the paint thickness.
And remember the "quirks" of this car. The sunroof is creaky, there is often a flutter/vibration in the drivetrain from 28-35 MPH, and the tires on the 5.0 are staggered (and huge!) and expensive. Also, a lot of the soft plastics like seals get destroyed in places with a lot of sun. So if you're in the South, watch out. Also, Hyundai doesn't let you turn off the traction and stability control indefinitely, so you can't do extended burnouts and fishtails (#sad!).
I hope you live close to a Hyundai dealership!
