  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type

Hello! Super interested in this sedan, found one with a clean car fax 2 owners for 15xxx. Unfortunately 99k miles on it, should I be worried? Does anyone here have a 5.0 well past the 100k mark who can testify the reliability and maintenance cost won’t bankrupt me? It’s in my price range and I would love to get rid of my 13’ Chevy volt (you can laugh). Insurance on my volt is incredibly high compared to what sites are saying the genesis is much lower. Looking for any honest feedback I would love to bite the bullet and take this guy off the lot. If it escapes me I won’t be too sad.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Maintance is somewhat cost effective, but please make sure 100k maintenance was done by a certified dealer, as that endeavor can be pretty expensive.

IMHO Driving this vehicle without warranty is like playing Russian roulette, most likely you are going to be fine, but there is always the possibility of something going wrong.
Unless you are prepared to source parts and fix things yourself, please be aware that toys on this vehicle are pretty expensive to repair.

This is coming from a guy that has owned 3 V8s and one V6 in the last 12 years (yes, I got the first 4.6 V8 that was sold in GA), with a combined 250000 miles..

If you like the car, please get an a high mileage aftermarket bumper to bumper warranty from a reputable company, to avoid any potential for a Bankruptcy, just my two cents for what is worth...

Good luck.

Remember that this car has something like 55 modules, and a lot of working on this car is using the Hyundai GDS system. If you're an Auto tech or are super comfortable working with scan tools, you can buy a Chinese knockoff for $200 - otherwise, I think it's at least $2000 + yearly license fees for a genuine Hyundai scan tool. I'm not even sure non-dealers can buy the tool, but others can comment.

If the head unit goes, that's a $2500 part. if the display goes, that's a $2500 part, and there numerous threads here about head units going, including mine.
If you get rear ended and the rear cross traffic alert sensors get damaged, that's a lot. If you bump something and the radar cruise control module gets damaged, that's at least $3000 (I think). Fobs cost at least $400 to buy and get programmed.

For a guy like me (late 40s, experienced at moderate wrenching, but worried about frying electronics), this is a dealer-only car. I can do oil, brakes, plugs, suspension, stuff like that.

You can probably pick used modules up on ebay, but you still have to program them using the GDS. It's not plug and play. I would not buy this car without either having a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty, or have at least $4-5000 earmarked for car repairs. And I would definitely have the engine oil analyzed and get a thorough PPI. The folks on this board have heard this ad nauseum, but I bought my car from a big dealer, and only a month after I bought it did I realize that it had been in an unreported rear end collision. I simply didn't think to check the paint thickness.

And remember the "quirks" of this car. The sunroof is creaky, there is often a flutter/vibration in the drivetrain from 28-35 MPH, and the tires on the 5.0 are staggered (and huge!) and expensive. Also, a lot of the soft plastics like seals get destroyed in places with a lot of sun. So if you're in the South, watch out. Also, Hyundai doesn't let you turn off the traction and stability control indefinitely, so you can't do extended burnouts and fishtails (#sad!).

I hope you live close to a Hyundai dealership!

Biggest potential problem is the head unit. The 2015 was more prone than newer years for them to go out. I see Markeymark mentioned his and mine was replaced too.

As for the engine and trans, wit care should last double the miles on it. Great can but like all newer cars, lots of electronics.

I bought mine last year @ 64k... 79k now. I haven't encountered any major problems - The A/C did quit on me once, but pulling & reinserting both fuses solved it. Haven't had to worry about the Ultimate head unit yet, it was replaced by the previous owner. My pano roof operates normally - I just make sure to lubricate it periodically.

I do encounter the occasional odd electrical glitch here and there - mostly my HVAC trying to roast me on the driver's side, which is remedied by restarting the car... There's also a small coolant leak @ an o-ring for the transmission warmer, since it's not major, I just keep an eye on the coolant level. I've been aware of it for about 4 months and still only have had to add a total of little over a quart. It's literally a .50 part - but requires pulling the intake to access it.

I've got a savings account set up for any unforeseen repairs, figure that it's a better use of my $ than paying for a warranty that may or may not decide to cover your repair IMHO.

Hey y’all, thanks a ton for the input! I have to think this over, although I love everything about this car the possible problems could be too much for me to handle. Perhaps my best chance would be to buy a new genesis in the future. I looked through car fax and only saw repairs done on the valve purge, and it actually does have some cosmetic damage reported on the side. I’m torn but I really appreciate everyone for their experience.

Honestly, I think these cars are reliable compared to the Germans but I wouldn't want to own any luxury car outside of warranty. Maybe I would do one major out of pocket fix but I would trade the car soon after.

Just a thought, If you really like the Genesis, you could also explore the 3.8 trim, with a lower mileage, the base or premium, but not the Tech or the ultimate as they tend to far more reliable than the two top trims.
They are still beautiful cars, you will get better mileage and you still get significant number of goodies, including leather, keyless start, NAV, rear camera etc.

might I ask what type of lubricant do you use for your pano roof?? looking at doing that this spring...Appreciate your input...
thanks

Don't do it!!!!!!!!! My car spends more time in the shop than on the road. Aside from that, the notorious 25 to 30mph vibration and creaking pano roof will make you want to swerve off the road and wreck this hunk of scrap metal head on into a tree.

Some dealers are using PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) for creaky sunroofs.

I used this and the creaking stopped and the roof closes properly now. You just paint the perimeter of the glass with a brush and some PDMS (available at Amazon).

2015 genesis drive train is rock solid! I haven't had any major mechanical issues and im at 82k mi. However the electronics are touch and go, my headunit, touchscreen, and backup camera have all been replaced, as well as the trunk lid wiring harness. The interior leather wears out very easy, and plastic clips on panels get brittle and break.

Ive had all maintenances done at the dealer. The most costly were rear brake pads, rotors and flush $800 (didnt have time to do on my own), and transmission flush + other stuff fir $700, front brakes i did myself for $250.

How much money are you willing to spend on the car? That way, we can guide you the right direction. Did you consider 3.8? Here are the differences that I know between 2015 5.0 Ultimate and 2015 3.8 Ultimate:

You get the following for the 3.8:
- AWD
- Heated Steering Wheel
You don't get the following for the 3.8:
- fog lights

You get the following for 5.0:
- fog lights
You don't get the following for the 5.0:
- AWD
- Heated Steering Wheel

These options change for the newer models.

These cars are solid and the build quality is great overall. It all depends on how you maintain your car. I have 74k miles on mine and when I give it a good detail in and out, it looks like it just left the showroom. You can find one with low miles that will be in worst shape than a high milage one. There are a lot of electronic parts that you can buy cheap on eBay and if you are a DIY-er, you will be just fine.

Depends on the market. Up north, our 5.0 only comes in Ultimate trim. If you want the tech package, it's the 3.8 for you.

All our 2015-2016 Genesis sedans only came in AWD, no RWD and we had heated steering wheels.

We don't have the rear shade though :(

I dunno what's up with Canada and AWD... Even now, the only Genesis you can buy with RWD is the 2.0T G70 Sport
