  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hands-on review of GV80, interior & exterior, also things you didn't know about GV80!

We are talking about luxury SUV's in these this thread. The Genesis is trying to break into a difficult market. The reason folks look at luxury cars is because of the luxury. We aren't looking for plastic or vinyl. We are paying for engine and drive train (well many of us are) and luxury. Leather isn't a fad at all. I work with leather as a hobby at times and can tell the difference most of the time in the quality of leather. Most car companies do a wonderful job with the leather they use. I do agree that most folks can't always tell the difference between Connelly, Napa etc... I do feel that most can tell lower grades used in less expensive cars.

I don't think I suggested that Genesis use plastic exclusively since I am sure it would turn-off buyers like yourself. Mercedes successfully offers MBTEX on their "Luxury" vehicles. I am just stating my personal preference and the associated practicality.

I have been called a name for stating what the large majority of luxury car buyers are looking for. I realize that everyone is making lower cost vehicles to get young buyers into their brands. They have to make cuts in lesser engines, vinyl, lesser components. That's not luxury for me, but it's offered by a luxury brand.

I also want to make my thoughts clear IRT the GV80. I would not be here and be so serious about this SUV if I didn't feel it was a luxury car made with as good or better parts than the European cars. I also think my wife may look at the G80 or the G90 in two years when her lease is up.

Hi CarSceneKorea, with regards AppleCar Play and Android, still the connectivity only by USB?

Hi CarSceneKorea, with regards AppleCar Play and Android, still the connectivity only by USB?
In the Korean owners manual on page 5-60 (via Google Translate) I found the following: "Android smartphones support connections via Wi-Fi dongle and USB cables (translated to "keables") and Wi-Fi dongle on iOS smartphones.

THAT SAID....not completely sure this is relation to Android Auto or something in the proceeding section related to a camera function and Smartphones. Really REALLY wish I could read Korean at this point. Going to just translate the entire PDF doc w/Google rather than bits and pieces.

Curt, please do share if you get it translated, lol. I wish I know how to use translate better. I've tried a few times, but don't always see the translate button on top. What's a wifi dongle? A wifi plug in of some sort? I know the new iPhones won't even have a lightning port. I use an external DAC for my custom in ear monitors and won't consider a phone that I can't use a port for my DAC. Too much of my audiophile rants in a car thread, lol...sorry.

I did a basic translation on packages etc... I found out that it's not a full leather interior on the Prestige Package. Not a deal breaker by any means, just pointing out as some of us wondered if all the surfaces would be real leather or not. I'm still bummed that we won't get all the paint options they offer in Korea. This is really a lot for the coin.

Curt, I just looked on the same page, and this is a guide to "how to download built-in cam videos"
Nothing related with Apple car play or Android for that matter.
I feel your frustration there,
let me know if there is a page you dearly need an exact translation of on the owner's manual.
Unfortunately, I can't do them all :'(

I'll dig through the manual to find answers to Apple car player and Android Auto.

Hi CarSceneKorea, with regards AppleCar Play and Android, still the connectivity only by USB?
Found the answer to this,
and unfortunately, yes, only by USB cable, located right next to wireless charging port.
Nothing else needed though.

Okay....now I just went down the proverbial rabbit hole in understanding in Korean domestic market cars the difference between N neutral on the rotary dial and N (neutral parking) using the button as I noted above and below.

The rotary dial neutral is a true neutral BUT it will not maintain that mode. The neutral parking button (via Google Translate): "Parked so that others can move the vehicle". Perhaps @CarSceneKorea can translate the Korean from page 6-10 & 6-11 of the manual. The warning on 6-11 run through Google translate is pretty funny though: "If you park the "N" (neutral) park, park on level ground. Car accidents on slopes cause safety accidents You can."

Terribly sorry I am getting back to this question late. I must've missed it under many alarms.
So, left section of 6-10 is simply how to put the car in N after the engine is turned off WHILE driver is in the seat.
This is a feature often required to go under an automated carwash here in Korea, so probably is the reason why it's shown there.

To the right, is how to put the car in N after engine is shut off, with the driver away from the car, and the car locked!
This goes back to the parking situations I mentioned in the earlier comments with a photo,
and sole purpose is so that the vehicle can remain in N for anyone to push and move it around.
This is a rather special feature required for Korean market(and some ppl can't buy German cars bc they don't have this feature -- they will always go into P if the car is turned off and locked -- so GV80 has it.

And cautions written on the 6-11
is just typical warning say that this feature must only be used under "emergency"
and how to put it back to P if you want to.

I'm not most tech savvy person, I suspected there would be, but there's none?
If there are, I haven't heard of any. So far, these are the only cars that even offer wireless Apple Carplay:

Wireless CarPlay: How to use Apple CarPlay wirelessly with your car
  • Audi A7 (2019 and newer)
  • Audi A8 (2019 and newer)
  • Audi Q8 (2019 and newer)
  • Audi e-tron SUV (2020 and newer)
  • BMW 5 Series (2017 and newer)
  • BMW 3 Series (2018 and newer)
  • 2019 BMW range
  • Lamborghini Urus (2017 and newer)
  • Mercedes A-Class (2018 and newer)
  • Mercedes GLE (2019 and newer)
  • 2019 Mini range
  • Toyota Supra (2020 and newer)
Supra can barely be counted since it's a reskinned BMW.

Bluetooth cannot handle the bandwidth needed to run it. Supposedly it is being worked on but could take a long time.

Well dang, in a shocking twist of events the just-revealed new Hyundai Elantra has both wireless Carplay and Android Auto. Is that an industry first?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra Has A Sharp New Look

I'd be very surprised if this doesn't make its way into the GV80 and all future Hyundai/Kia/Genesis products.

You'd think they'd almost have to have it. Does it need a special dongle? If so, I'd rather just use the USB cable as I'm so used to it anyway. I also assume you would have to purchase the wifi connectivity to use it wirelessly?

Yes to it works like BMW’s and others there is nothing special that is needed. It connects using Bluetooth and then the vehicle’s WiFi. There is no need to purchase anything else since the phone’s data connection is used.

This does not surprise me regarding the Elantra. My daughter purchased the last Gen sport Elantra when it came out. It was the first vehicle in Canada to get Bluelink connectivity and some other tech I cannot remember right now. Probably missed this feature by a few months.

I was under the impression that Bluetooth (from the phone to the car) did not have enough bandwidth to support Carplay. Are you sure the WiFi is not built into the car and connects to the phone that way?
