  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sudden engine shutdown

Glad I was able to find this post. My dad came to a stop at a light and the engine shut off completely. Started right back up and hasn't happened since. It's a 2012 5.0 R-Spec with ~145k miles. Going to check the pos battery post. Otherwise, I'll take a look at the start/stop button.

Don’t mean to gravedigger but is there a link or anything to the terminal clamp you used? Currently having the same issue

I can report that I have not had an issue with my car since I adjusted the terminal clamp.

Again, I have an aftermarket battery (still not cheap). I adjusted the clamp by placing an additional piece metal inside the clamping mechanism of the terminal clamp. By adding the metal piece, I was able to get a tighter fit on the post.

To test if your clamp is not holding properly. With the clamp in place. see if you can turn it by hand or, as in my case, lift it off completely without any tools. If it wiggles or comes free, you will need to figure out a way to add a piece of material to take up the slack. I chose to address the clamp its self so I could maintain complete post contact.

Hope this helps.

Please remember to report the issue. Its the only way we can hope to get it addressed at the company level.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

About to go outside and check the battery connections. I'm also going to file a complaint through NHTSA. Hoping other folks have done so as well. Doesn't seem like it's a terribly isolated issue if I've found multiple forum posts about it...likely there's a good amount of people that aren't on the forums or social media that have also experienced it.

I had a similar issue. The ground wire was attached to a painted piece in the trunk. I cleaned off the paint and hasn't happened since.

I have a 2012 Genesis and have had the engine stop while driving twice since
October. No indicator lights come on. Both times I was driving under 25 mph
making a turn. Very scary to have this happen. First time I took the car back
and service writer could not duplicate the problem. Today I dropped the car
back again with a different service writer who told me he has never heard
of this problem and" has been in the business many years".
I am worried this is something that they cannot fix and I am not going to be
confident about driving the car without worrying about whether or not it may
shut down while driving for no reason.
Anyone else have a similar problem?
Thanks for any comments or advise.

I had same issues took to dealer twice diagnostics showed nothing finally after another stall check engine light stayed on and took to dealer it is the crank shaft sensor which causes engine stall they should know this by now

The annoying thing about the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) is that the computer can only test it when you are trying to start the engine. If your car has a flaky CPS that works okay for a while and then fails once it warms up or after the vehicle shakes from hitting bumps/dips in the road, the engine will stall - from the missing CPS signal - but no OBD-II error code will be recorded. There will be a code only once the sensor completely fails.

YES. We also have a 2012 Genesis sedan. Bought with 21k miles, 1yr old. 3x has this car just out of the blue and suddenly shut down while driving. No warning without control. The steering can lock up as well as brakes are hard to apply. We have 39k on car now. Car is at dealership. This is completely unsafe to drive. Will update ASAP.
I have a 2014 Genesis sedan. ( 3.8) car electrically shut down, out of the blue going 35mph. Hard knock form transmission as it was engaged, when this happened. Pulled over put in park. Started right up.?? ( 43,000)miles.

If your car has EHPS, see the picture .

Check the connecter. sometimes the burned connecter makes the engine shutdown

I'm having the same problem right now? I just bought a 2009 genisis off somebody on craigslist and everything looked good it ran good, but when I got home me the wife and kids were going to go for a ride. Got on the freeway for a few miles was getting off to get gas and the car just stalled on me, barely was able to get it to safe place, stuck in the right lane
Tried starting it the lights came on but car wouldn't start, justclick click. Had it towed to my house and still nothing??? Straight bummed out, didnt even have the car 24hrs . 4,500 I'm out. Anyone got answers to this problem??? The car ran good on the way back home, but now I have no ride and no money. Need help asap

I posted in November about my similar problem. My instrument panel went "Christmas tree!" and the car violently jerked. My problem was found to be a BAD instrument cluster. Hope this helps.

this morning on my way to work, my 2012 genesis just died on me after a few seconds started right back up ....any solutions

Please check your battery connections and see if you can move either terminal with your hands.

A couple months ago I experienced the same problem that posters Debbyfla and mcrean3 did. I had just exited the interstate and come to a stop at a traffic light when the engine stopped. In my scenario, all indicator lights on the dash came on and the radio stayed on (can't recall A/C). I put the car in park, restarted the engine and moved through the intersection without a problem. The next day I took the car to my dealer, where they ran a diagnostic. My service writer said no errors were logged in the computer, so he couldn’t determine what had happened. He also said he had not heard of this problem before.

I haven't had any problems since, but I still don’t know what caused this problem so I worry about it happening again. The car is a 2012 with about 33,000 miles.

If Debbyfla or anyone else has any updates to share about this problem, please do. Thanks for the help.
We have a 2012 Genesis sedan and it has done the same thing to us about 5 times over the last 4 years. The dealership and a private mechanic have been uanble to diagnose. The engine shuts down and the indicator lights on the dash light up. It restarts no problem when in park. Yes, it is very dangerous.

Most of these symptom seems like an alternator problem, I dont think Alternator would display any type of check engine code. It will simply keep doing this until it totally die out and one day you cannot start your car, happen on my 09 at 120k i think...Beware of aftermarket alternator, I had a mechanic put an autozone refurb one and it die within a year.

This is MOST LIKELY it, people. The problem of engine suddenly die on slow speeds and happen intermittently.

I'm very familiar with it. My sister gave me her 2012 Genesis v6 gen precisely because of it. Car died (but able to restart) in the middle of the road for them twice and scared them to dead. So, they let it go.

But I'm good with it because my 2005 Altima v6 has had the same problem, as many other Nissans including my coworker's Maxima. It stalled on me while on a busy freeway! Twice. For some reason I never got nervous. I replaced the crank shaft position sensor and camshaft sensor and never experienced the problem again.

Back to the Genesis. So, I knew what to fix, but luck has it that the whole engine knocked and then blew up. I replaced the whole engine. My mechanic said the new engine (a rebuilt) came with a cps so no worries about the old one.

I have put about 500 miles on the rebuilt-engine Gen with very aggressive driving, pushing 90mph sometimes. No issues. It's smooth and quiet.

You mean you slowed down to 90 sometimes?? ;-) ;-)

I also have a 2012 3.8 sedan that I bought new. It's done that stall-out maybe 3 times since I've had it. Always going slow starting to turn into a parking lot. Always started right back up after I stopped and put it in park. It's been several years now since the last time it did that trick.

I had the crankshaft position sensor replaced since there were no codes and the dealer nor another mechanic could diagnose the problem for certain. Unfortunately, $550 and 5 weeks later, the problem happened again. Almost got my son killed when it stalled in the middle of a turn at a busy intersection.

I have a 2012 Genesis and I first started having this problem in 2013. Today, in 2021, I am still having the same problem. I have taken it to the dealership and continue to get the same answer. They can not find anything wrong with the car. Now searching the problem on the Internet, it is obvious that this is a malfunction with the Genesis. I will go on record with the manufacturer online today.
