  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone taken a thumb drive, loaded it with songs and plugged it into the USB ipod slot? I don't have the tech version, just the pack 3 V6. Will the songs just play?? Ooooh I hope so!

Please let me know if you've tried this - otherwise I'll try it myself and get back to you here.

Thank you!
Seth

I have a question as well. Can you stick a cd or dvd into the audio system and download the songs onto the hard drive in the tech pkg.? If so can someone share how that you do that? Thanks!!!

Didn't know the non-tech had a USB drive. How do you select it as a source? To answer your question, yes you can copy folders to a thumb drive and they play automatically, after you select the drive as the source. The drive will support a heirarchy of folders, but to keep it simple, for my test I created folders by artist name, then within those folders WMA files named with song title. In the tech pack, when you select USB/AUX you see the artist folders on the left and when you select one you see the song titles on the right [side of the display]. You also have full functionality for repeat, random play, etc.

As for the hard drive, it is not accessible by mere mortals. Presumably the service gods can get in there to do stuff like upgrade the nav system. As for music, it's cleaner and faster to use a thumb drive.

So what is the point of having a 30 or 40gig HD if you cannot download onto it.

BaywayRic,

You mentioned that in "USB/AUX mode, you see the artist folders on the left and when you select one you see the song titles on the right [side of the display]". I just tried this with a thumb drive. It worked well except that I couldn't really see the names of the songs because the left side of the screen is the general info - leaving only the right side for artist/album/song folder. It doesn't seem to move the folder over to the left so I can see the song title.

Am I missing something here or is there a way to make the screen not split between the two (leaving more space for the titles)?

Thanks!

Sorry, I was confused. [easy with this system] When you select USB on the left side, the top level folders appear on the right side. When you select a folder, the contents of that folder are displayed on the right side as well, below the folder list. In my test I only used two levels, i.e. top folders were artist names, next level was song titles. It works just like 'explorer' in Windows. The folder tree just keeps expanding downwards. Options are available at each level for repeat, random, etc.

BaywayRic,

Thanks for clarifying. I was on a plane today and finally had a chance to review the DIS manual. The reason I was asking my question is that I had tried out the thumb drive last night and by the time I got down to the song level, I couldn't see the title. It is probably because of the way my music is organized on my home computer.

I am probably the only guy in America without an ipod - I still use the Dell Music Match that came on my computer four years ago to organize music and burn disks. It organizes by artist, then album, then song. Since the DIS wastes the left half of the screen, I wasn't seeing the title of the track on the right when it got down to that level. Looks like I have two options: Get rid of the subfolders by album or drill down to "details" in the menu to see each title individually...

I don't have one either! That's why I stay out of those discussions. Have a Dell Jukebox from several years ago, and it organizes stuff just like you indicate. I just read down my folder list of Artists, then made new folders on the thumb drive. Then just drag all the songs, or ones you want, into that folder. Works perfect, and it's quick.

I have the non tech version which doesnt have the DIS system. There is a usb port and yes, music plays on the thumb drive, but I dont seem to have a tree like explorer... I can scroll through the songs and the folders in the manner XM works. Is this because it doesnt have the DIS, or is it a setting?

If so, do you know how to adjust the setting?

Page 4-116 in your manual should explain it pretty well. Scrolling with the folder ^ & folder V key, should manipulate your list similar to the +/- toggle in explorer.

Haven't tried this yet; does the random work at the top-level of the menu, allowing it to randomize songs from all artists' folders, or does it only randomize within the artist folder you have currently selected?

If you push random once, it randomizes the folder... if you push and hold the random button it will beep and then randomize the whole drive.
