If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Howdie doo to all!

It was 5:45am on HWY 20 here in Decatur this morning when I came to rest at a red light near Jacks. Looking to my right was a kid in a GT just itching to race. It was red and sounded awesome. (There is nothing like the sound of a GT with an X-pipe) It was lowered just a little and had some aftermarket rims that were black.

We both knew the light was about to change and so he revved it up a little. Yes, I was intimidated. Who knows what is bolted on under the hood.

By this time I am getting that little twitch in my stomach and was wondering if I should leave my ESC on or off...especially with my bald tires. Well, I decided to leave it off and just ease into it. I knew that he would probably get a little tire spin as well...

GREEN....and were off. We both spin like crazy and back off. I guess the 12 Degrees really took a toll on our tires. We then did the 3 horns and go method from a rolling start in mid first gear.

At the 3rd horn blast, we laid into it. We both fishtailed a little but managed to find grip about 2nd gear. I could not believe it when I began to ease ahead. He came on strong with 3rd gear and managed to put me even with his back window by 4th gear. Then the Gen showed off her 375 Korean Ponies and slowly but steadily walked on by. He backed off about 120 and I eased her on up to about 140 or so before I remembered I had bald tires and then I backed off.

What an amazing race that was. There was little to no traffic because we were both running late for work. It was wide open road and it happened to be between jurisdictions so there are never any cops on this stretch except for the occasional state trooper. My Beltronics Pro RX65 would have spoke to me, well in advance, if a bear was lingering out there.

Now, do I condone street racing...NO! It is illegal! Dangerous and stupid and I would never do it with passengers riding along. I fully accept the responsibility of my actions. I consider myself a defensive driver. At anytime during a normal drive, I can tell you what kind of car is 4 cars back and how he is driving as well as what the old lady is doing in the opposite lane .5 mile in front of me. I always have an escape route in mind in the event that I need to make an evasive maneuver. I guess driving a truck will teach you things to look out for. But does this make me a professional street racer...HECK NO! Ok...that was my speech.

Anywho, that put a smile on my face for the day!

To all V8 owners...CONGRATULATIONS on purchasing a 4100 lb car that will beat a stock 96-98 Mustang GT!!! As for you V6'ers, the GT will win, but you will have fun at least to 60!;)

PS: For what its worth, I also raced a Ford Powerstroke with the Bully Dog kit and aftermarket exhaust yesterday during lunch. I work with the man and he says nothing will ever beat his truck (he is one of those who always has the BEST of everything...HA) ...well, I proved him wrong and he had to buy me a hamburger at Jacks. Well, I felt bad because I knew that after the race he will be sinking another $1000 into his rig in order to compete...so I bought his burger...HA! Dont get me wrong, that truck was FAST and it was more of a race than the GT. He took me through 2nd gear before I could catch him in 3rd. But again, I eased ahead.

Hey PINGGOLF,

All I can say is your alittle nuts to race (maybe alot nuts) but whatever floats your boat. Please be careful especially with bald tires. When are you going to replace those anyway? I want to get some ideas when it's time to get rid of the Dunlops.

Sorta clueless about this street racing gig...but can you explain the "3 toots of the horn" thing? And the horn tooting, that's after you've already started rolling?

Sure...you begin rolling in your choice of gear. We chose first gear. Then when you feel as if you are even you tap the horn 3 times. On the 3rd "toot" you go.

Most higher horsepower cars will do this to avoid excessive wheel spin. For instance, Corvettes will usually start in 2nd or 3rd gear because a simple street start will fail miserably with wheel spin.

Once we started rolling there were no more toots of the horn.;)

Ah, the sheltered life I lead!

Yes...I am nuts...thanks to my dad teaching me how to drive...HA!

The race was stupid...let me tell you exactly how bald my tires are...I cannot leave a stop light at half throttle without the ESC engaging. Hence the reason that I am the only one driving the car or riding in the car. My wife has not driven it in 2 months.

I had fully planned on purchasing the tires before Christmas except we decided to spend about $5000 on a fence.

Right now, I am waiting on our next paychecks before I spend $500+ on some tires.

I know this is a competition thread so I will keep the tire story brief.

I now have 4 tires in mind.

Falken ZE512
Falken ZE912
Falken FX452
Hankook Ventus V12 Evo's

I am trying to go a bit wider with the tires but I am having trouble with the rim size. Our rims are 18 x 7's. When I look at the tires specs from Falken and Hankook in a 255/45/18 they want a rim width of 8-9.5". I am trying to figure out if those tires will work on a 7" rim and still be somewhat safe. They say that cornering is the biggest issue because the bead may separate while in a hard turn. I dont do any high speed cornering...Im a straight line kinda guy but I still want to be safe.

Who knows, I may just stick with the stock size and get the ZE912's. Consumer reports rated them #1.

Anywho, thanks for your comments!

The stock Genny 18" rims are 8"...not 7". These are the wheels on the V6 Premium. I doubt the 18" V8 rims are narrower. I recall reading the 17's are 7.5", but don't quote me on that. I confirmed the 18" with a ruler.

WHAT!!!! Dude, I hope your right! I wanted the 255/45's but I was a little scared with the rim width issue.

You are 100% Positive that they are 8's? If so, you have made my day!!!!:D:D:D

After your next reply, lets bring the discussion back to the "competition part." It doesn't look too good that a moderator is hijacking his own thread with tire talk! HA! Thanks bud!

****UPDATE****

Just called Bently Hyundai in Huntsville. They think they are 9" to 9.5" but he said that there is no way that they are 7"s due to the power of the V8.

YES!!! "I'M SO EXCITED AND I JUST CANT HIDE IT!" (singing loudly while headbanging here at work)

Positive as I can be, with a tape measure. :-) I thought I recalled someone talking about 8.5's...perhaps that is what the V8 is. I doubt they are 9 or bigger. That width just is not necessary with the stock tires.

The stock rims are 18x8 on the v8.

One concern, with a wider tires is clearance.

the stock rims/tires are tight....

You might be able to go 245/45 without any trouble but I think 255/40 would be a tight fit.

Pinggolf,
Excellent racing story. When I read threads like yours, I always expect the next reply to be an admonishment - basically all the negatives you already stated in your thread. I'm glad that is not the case. It sounds like you had the perfect conditions for this kind of adventure. It was fun to read about it, too. Since I have owned the Genesis I have thought more and more about finding a track that I can run it on, strange, because I really never had that thought at all with my '96 V6 Camry :).
