  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Scary stuff. Others on here have had the entire sun roof replaced and I think the lasting results are mixed. Your interior will be gutted for sure along with some glass removal to slide the headliner out. If you could get some good pics of the interior of the roof that would be handy to share. A couple of pics of the 3rd brake light wiring colors would help me tremendously on a project I have going. You may have to insist you want to see your car for some dealers are real anal about folks in the service area. Anytime I’ve had work done dealers at first say no and after some pushing they have let me in the service area to see the car or ask the technician a question. Hope everything works good for you. Keep us informed.

I’ll see, maybe I can get time off work to go in and take a peek. The parts get delivered on Tuesday or Wednesday, but I got the vibe that they already started taking the car apart. So I may try this Saturday. On the GCS website, it says my Smart Cruise Control and other systems have failed. Likely because they’ve unplugged all the wires above the headliner.

Well, I got a call from my dealer. They resurfaced my rotors to supposedly deal with the braking vibration, but as for the sunroof noise, they punted with a lame "could not replicate." Maybe it was because the weather hasn't been as warm (at which point the sunroof starting clunking quite noticeably), but even without the warm weather, it's more of a ticking sound.

I can only see this ending in me once again stuffing fabric into every orifice (of the car...) to attempt to muffle the sounds.

Naturally, the G70 loaner I had made the same noises.

Was the loaner a 2020? How many miles did it have? Seems most folks have had issues with 2019 sunroofs with few here complaining about 2020s. Just trying to figure out for those of us with 2020s and no issues yet, is it just a matter of time or did Genesis occasionally get a good one put together? Come July sometime Texas will hit 100 degrees so maybe that may be a good test of sunroof integrity.

Nope, sorry. It was a 2019 3.3 Sport, so I can't speak to whether there are any differences there. It did have sticky-icky summer tires though, so I made sure to give them a thorough workout.

While as a 2020 owner I hope you're right, I think it's just a matter of time and/or mileage.

Mine is a 2019 and.....dare I say....no headliner or sunroof noises..

...I hope now that I stated that it doesn't change. 😳

You and me both. Doesn’t make sense all sunroofs don’t have the same issues? How in the world does a sunroof know the car has 2k miles or 10k miles so it’s time to squeak? It’s like there is a life limited component somewhere, or maybe adhesive and when it’s life is up, rattles and squeaks start. Hoping it skips me.

It seems to be a combination of sub-optimal design, and how certain panels/rails are aligned on the roof prior to being screwed in at the factory. The latter appears to be important, as poor alignment at room temp can manifest itself as noise when temps deviate high or low, and the metal expands and contracts.

The glass part of the roof also seems to be too big for the actual size of the hole in the roof. I noticed that roughly 2/3 of the G70 roof is the glass sunroof panel, while the sunroof opening inside is less than 2/3. In comparison, the BMW M340 has what seems like the same size sunroof inside, but the glass on the outside it much smaller than the G70.

I would avoid the tailpipes if I were you!

Sucks to hear about this. I was supposed to take my car in to get my sunroof checked (and rotors), but covid hit and i still haven't rescheduled because I don't want anyone spraying a bunch of alcohol based disinfectant on my leather. Who knows when I'll get to it now...

Update: after having my sunroof assembly replaced last week, it seemed to solve the rattling issue. Until today, that is, because the rattle is now back. Not nearly as bad as before as it’s just now starting, but definitely there. I called Genesis Customer Care and made a case number, and will be taking the car back to the dealership on Monday. This is my third Hyundai-built product with a sunroof (first was a 2012 Sonata, then 2016 Genesis 3.8) and every single one has had an issue with sunroof rattles. Needless to say, this is extremely frustrating.
Yes. My G70 is back in the shop for the third time. Service rep told me there is as of now no fix for it. Awesome car, crappy sun roof. The noise is too loud to live with.

@G-174743, My dealership actually ended up fixing mine; they said they made some sort of adjustment to the roof, not sure what it was. Have your dealer call Genesis of Huntington Beach, maybe they’ll be able to help.

Oh and if they actually do call, have them speak to Ben, the service manager. He’s great and I’m sure he’d be happy to help.

Have you tried any of the fixes posted within this thread?

Update on my sunroof situation:

Dealer had car since May 15th. They couldn’t fix the problem, and ordered an entirely new sunroof assembly, and sent it off to a super highly rated body shop (they typically work on high end German cars, and exotics). The body shop worked on my car all week, and is wrapping up today.

They told the dealer that the G70 was an extreme PITA to work with, and the the sunroof assembly was NOT designed to ever come out. Seems like they had to improvise quite a bit. I may get the car back today after the dealer tests the fix by baking the car in the sun. I don’t have high hopes. Seems like people on this thread had this fix work for about a week at most before the noise came back.

Well, I’ve been offered a buyback. Waiting on final numbers to come back.
Wow. Well they admitted there was a problem they couldn’t fix. I hope the numbers are fair and you can stop worrying about your car which no one should have to do

Now that you've had the car back since June 10, is the noise still gone?

2020, 635 miles, sunroof rattle 😭
