If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey all, new to the forum though I've been looking a bit. I've narrowed down my car search entirely to a 2015/2016 Genesis with the Tech and Signature packages, not particularly picky about 5.0 vs 3.8 and will likely buy whichever one I find for the best deal. Seems I've picked a tough time to get serious about buying, though, as the amount of cars on the market is quite a bit less than 6-8 months ago when I first started looking. That being said, I've seen a few high mile 5.0s pop up lately and am curious what everyone's thoughts on buying a high mileage Genesis are? Particularly I've found a 150,000 mile 5.0 with the tech and signature package listed for $13,500 with an immaculate interior and a reasonably clean 1 owner Carfax. My gut is always that if the engine/transmission combination has made it 150,000 miles, it'll likely make it another 100,000 with very little issue assuming it's well taken care of, especially because the bulk of vehicles with that kind of mileage at 5 years old are going to have been largely highway miles. The flip side of that is that the rest of the car can still fall apart around the engine and transmission at that mileage which kind of makes the whole thing pointless and is why I wanted to post this and gauge everyone's thoughts on the car's reliability both engine/transmission wise as well as overall. Thanks!

Carmax, Carvana has several.

Thanks for the tip on Carvana, I hadn't checked there. Really looking to pay cash somewhere between $15-$19k though, and none of there cars meet at criteria at the moment.

I would definitely try to make sure if you get one with 100,000 plus miles, that they’re highway miles. There are a lot of tell-rale signs that a used car has highway miles v city miles.

Also, you want the V8.

Ha! Yeah I'd definitely prefer the V8, and honestly they aren't selling for much more than the V6 at the moment so it may work out that way.

Any tips on what to look for as far as city vs highway miles?

Theres a guy on youtube. His site is my car angel. He goes through all the tips on at least one of his videos. He’s very helpful.

I bought my 5.0 about 18 months ago with 62K on it - sales guy said it was mostly highway...

Of course they all say that.

There are some things that you can notice about the condition of the car to confirm if it's legit - For me, it's the wear of the interior. For 62K, there was hardly a mark or a crease on the outside of the driver's seat. Kinda showed me that someone wasn't getting in and out of it very much... Not much wear anywhere else inside either. And there wasn't a scuff or ding anywhere on the exterior or curb rash - showed me that it stayed on the move & then parked in the garage. I also checked the previous destinations in the nav system. There were destinations all over Texas - here distances are measured in hours rather than miles.

To sum it up, the car I bought @ 62K was in much better shape than several that I drove beforehand that had 35 - 40k. that were actually kinda scruffy in comparison. So drive as many examples as you can.

And you do want the V8 - the real word mileage difference isn't that much. Car and Driver tested both and got the same observed mileage for both - 19 mpg

Thanks for the tips! Reliability-wise have you had any issues?

Not major ones - the AC did stop working last summer. I just pulled the inside and underhood HVAC fuses and reinserted them and it started working again. Since I had already had an appointment at the dealer, I kept it. I explained what I did to the tech and he said that occasionally over time some of the fuses will work themselves loose... Problem never returned.

Other than that, not much other oil changes & brake pads & rotors - the usual stuff.

Power train seems very solid in the 5.0.

Based on my experience, I would never consider a used 2015 without some kind of quality warranty to go with it. Have had a ton of problems, and parts are expensive.

Probably better to just go for a 2016 and up.

My 2015 5.0 seems way more solid than my old Inifinti G - before 75k it had eaten an alternator, an AC compressor, both cam position sensors, both electronic throttle bodies (both because you replace in pairs) and a water pump. And before I got rid of it the limited slip diff was starting to growl a little bit...

What all have you had go wrong? Hoping that by this point, the former owners will have dealt with most of the electrical/sunroof gremlins.

It's a long list but I deed mostly electrical issues, of a wide variety and severity, bad switches, and as you already mentioned sunroof problems, in my case it would not close on multiple occasions. Oh and a brake booster failure.

It's a great car when it all works but yeah, not going to buy a first model year car again.

5.5 years in and I am one more electrical gremlin away from dumping it now that it's out of warranty.

The 2021 G80 looks fantastic but I will not be an early adopter.

Yikes, G sounds pretty bad. My wife's Lexus RX350 is supposedly bullet proof, yet between the failed radiator, alternator, and coil packs I am not so much impressed by the reliability as much as the dealer service, something Genesis could really learn from.

I think I listed most of my issues in another thread but suffice it to say it's had a ton of electrical problems, culminating in a major wiring harness replacement.

Glad to hear you got a good one.

My wife's 2011 Lexus RX350 AWD has been trouble free with just over 100k miles. However, I had to replace the rear power lift-gate motor which only cost me $70 due to swapping the bad motor for a used motor off eBay myself.

Therefore, I cannot really comment on my local Lexus dealer service, never needed it to be honest. However, I also never needed any Hyundai/Genesis dealer assistance so that is nice as well.

LOL. I purchased a full comprehensive warranty just for that concern when I bought the car used and my 2015 5.0 Ultimate has only had small cosmetic issues like peeling shift knob, faded pillar trim, etc., but no electrical/mechanical issues aside from a glitch in the rear view camera that does not change view angles as requested. It is stuck in normal view angle.

No other issues. Very solid for a 5 year old car with 75k miles.

Sound like you got a well kept car that saw minimum use from the previous owner. Good find.

My 2015 was used daily and the wear shows it. It was not terrible, but I had to replace a few trim items that looked worn(peeling chrome) like the shift knob and wiper stalks.

I average 21-22 mpg on my 28 mile work commute(mostly city driving), which is great for a V8;let alone a 420hp V8.

Thanks - he really took care of it. And the windows had a great tint job done on 'em as well - A real bonus in the Texas heat, which prob helped with preserving the inside. Also, the Carfax said that the original Head Unit had been replaced and it had a nice set of Bridgestone summer tires on it.

I wasn't too concerned about the mileage (62k) when I figured out it was mostly highway. The car was from Tyler TX, there were numerous NAV entries to Houston (200mi), San Antonio (300mi), Austin (230) and a couple to New Orleans (420mi). So, I guess I got it with around 25 - 35k worth of Mechanical wear.

I usually put a ton of research in on buying a used car - I probably looked at 30+ ads for 5.0's and drove 6 of them with various amounts of mileage (35 - 75k). I try to drive as many as I can in different conditions so I get a "baseline" for what they're supposed to "feel" like. This one that was a trade from a local, well respected Mercedes dealer seemed to be the best bang for the buck.

Know what you mean about the mpg - My previous Infiniti G sedan was lucky to crack 22-24mpg on the highway! I get 20-21mpg in Houston traffic.

Probably built on a Wednesday - according to the old Johnny Cash song, that's when the line workers put in their best effort...

Yeah - the G was a fun car even with the repairs. I eventually got tired of it beating me up on my commute. Infiniti/Nissan is not Japan's best effort, unfortunately.
