  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all,

I bought some Supertech Extended Life coolant and I’m wondering if it’s good in our cars.

I don
t see why not. It says it is for all engines and the manual does not specify anything special
Recommended engine coolant
• When adding coolant, use only
deionized water, distilled water or
soft water for your vehicle and
never mix hard water in the coolant
filled at the factory.
• An improper coolant mixture can
result in severe malfunction or
engine damage.
• The engine in your vehicle has aluminum
engine parts and must be
protected by an ethylene-glycolbased
coolant to prevent corrosion
and freezing.
• Do not use alcohol or methanol
coolant or mix them with the specified
coolant.
• Do not use a solution that contains
more than 60% antifreeze or less
than 35% antifreeze, which would
reduce the effectiveness of the
solution

I cannot attest to the overall quality and performance of the Supertech coolant, however it is formulated to be used in our cars per Supertech since it covers all makes; so it "should" be fine to use. Many modern aftermarket coolants are formulated(non corrosive additives) to be used in any car regardless of OEM color if it states for any model use.

Hell, I use Prestone any vehicle formula coolant that is suppose to be compatible with any color coolant. Seems to work fine in my engine so far, no leaks or over heating. However, I was a bit wary since it is green in color. The older green aftermarkets coolants are a big no-no for aluminum engines.

So to sum it up; if the bottle does not say Asian models(specifically Hyundai) or any make(or color coolant), then you should not use the coolant in your engine. If it does; then you "should" be fine using it.

Without going into a huge ton of details, there are 3 basic types of coolant. Here is a link that explains them Antifreeze

Very long story short, these universal coolants remove some of the beneficial additives in the interest of compatibility. Will they "harm" your car, no. It's not like they will gel up or anything. But they tend to have less corrosion protection and shouldn't be considered a long-life coolant.

With our cars, you are best off buying "Asian" coolant. Blue or Red, same thing. I buy blue since it matches what came in the car.

Just make sure you get the correct type for the car (universal, IAT, OAT, or HOAT), and you'll be fine. Your owner's manual (or local Hyundai parts counter) will tell you which to use.

What brand do you use?

As mentioned, and glycol based coolant will do, per the manual. You can choose the color.

Well depends on who is making the long life coolant. The Prestone long life I use in my 2015 Genesis is a OAT fluid that covers all vehicles. However, it is a fairly newer formula, made after the article you linked was written most likely. Information changes pretty frequently in the automotive world.

But I agree with you that you cannot go wrong with the specify "Asian" coolant for KIA/Hyundai models.

Correction: I checked the Prestone bottle and it does not specify if it is OAT or HOAT; only that it is long life and has Cor-guard protection. However, it is a Ethylene Glycol based coolant which has a very light greenish color in the light ;almost clear.
