Genesis Model Type
Equus (2011-2016)
Every 2000-3000 miles my Equus is 1.5-2 quarts low on oil. I replaced my pcv valve last month so it’s not that, and I never have smoke coming out the exhaust.
Anyone else have this issue or is this normal for these GDI engines? I’ve read about using high mileage motor oil to swell up gaskets and seals.
My car only has 59k but it is 8 years old.
Last oil change was with Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W20 Synthetic. Went higher weight to try to stop this oil loss.
Appreciate any tips or advice

Do you have a V6 or a V8?

Are you confident it's not dripping out? I realize it would be obvious in a garage or cement driveway, but who knows if you park in the grass or something. It could also only be dripping in high pressure oil situations.

But yes, I would do the same and move to 5W-30 or 10W-40 high mileage.

Your 5.0 V8 engine is the same engine that was in the ‘12 Genesis. It was notorious for oil consumption problems, but not all of the engines that year were problematic. The defective engines were traced to a manufacturing blooper. Try searching the forum for that info. If you are the original owner you are covered by the 10/100,000 warranty. If not, you may be SOL.

Exactly. The early 2012 5.0 engines had a bad run of defect piston rings that caused excessive oil consumption. I would suggest 3k mile oil changes for now on and do not use an oil weight heavier than 5w-30.

Note: Using oil that it is too thick can also cause excessive wear since the oil will not flow well into the areas that need it due to the tight engine tolerances.

Was not aware of that fact. Thanks for the clarity. 👍

The Equus came originally with the 4.6L V8 in 2010 and 2011. 2012 was first year of the 5.0L in the Equus.

Thanks for the clarification. I think the .5.0 in my 15 Ultimate is a good solid engine. I plan on keeping the car so I will see she holds up. I am a preventive maintenance nut. I have ran fleets of trucks for the last 20 years and see first hand how good maintenance to vehicle extends the life of a piece of Machinery/Auto.

Yea I park in a garage everyday and there’s no signs of oil dripping. I’m just curious where the oil goes. I’d expect a plume of smoke coming out my exhaust. I’m at 59.9k so I’m going to try to take it to the dealership but it’s been over 6 years and I’m the second owner so not likely the dealer would cover it. I can live with topping off with a quart of oil every 1k miles. Got the car for $13k so it’s not like I have a ton of money invested in this thing.

Well my manufacture date in the door panel says late 2011 so unfortunately it looks like I got the bad pistons rings. I’m trying to see if there are any class action law suits because I’ve seen 2012 Genesis 5.0 owners complaining about the same piston ring issue.

Well took it to the dealer and they could not locate any signs of oil leaks so they’re putting my Equus on an Oil Consumption Log. Cost me $60 for the oil change and they waived the $170 diagnostic fee which was nice. They said there’s a TSB for the 5.0 V8’s having this issue. They put the Equus on 5w30 Quaker State Enhanced Durability Synthetic Blend. Returning in 1000 mile increments to track the oil loss and after 2000 miles they’ll send the logs to Hyundai who will decide if they’ll fix it or if I’m SOL.

Don't get too excited for a fix. Many car makers still say a quart every 1000 miles is normal. It was in 1960

How much oil consumption is normal?
It is a fact that most engines will burn some oil. The majority of manufacturers consider one quart of oil in the range of 1,500 miles to be acceptable. It should also be pointed out there are some performance vehicles that will consume a quart of oil in less than 1,000 miles and is also considered acceptable.

... I’d expect a plume of smoke coming out my exhaust...

I've heard that the catalytic converters are pretty good at hiding the smoke from the oil burning in the engine.

You are on the right track. Well done!

Sorry to hear that. I hate having defective engines even if they are covered by extended recall warranties so I feel your pain. Hopefully you can get a goodwill repair or some other credit from Hyundai to correct the issue even if your Equus is out of warranty.

Does your 5.0 use engine oil Carguy75?

Service guy said a quart per 1000 miles is “normal” and based on how much I’ve added these past 5 months I’m right about there.

Manufacturers may consider this "normal" wear, but this means that over one "average" OCI (~6K), you're adding at least 5 qts of oil...unacceptable.

As a teenager I had a car like that. Its a feature! I never changed oil as it was always fresh with a quart every 500 miles.

The quart per thousand was very normal years ago but today it is more an excuse. I honestly don't recall the last time I had to add between changes in the past 20 years or more.
