Don’t know about you guys/gals but I feel like they focused way way more on the GV70. That model will definitely get the 2.5t and 3.5tt. After hearing the reviews of the 3.5tt and how much better it is for gas mileage, it would of made more sense for them to include it in the facelift instead of keeping the 3.3tt. Hearing everyone’s complaints about that engine not being fuel efficient really shows Genesis should have listened to the consumers rather then what they think would be cheaper to put in it. I already see @Beefer getting into the GV70 instead of the facelift, or waiting for the redesign model. But I understand his point and position on that matter. Personally think Genesis just let the ball down big time with the facelift. Ever since we saw it leaked we knew it wasn’t going to be a good facelift. Plus i think after Genesis has really got there lineup completed they need to introduce a performance brand in Genesis that’s not using the “sport” name. With the next gen model coming out in 3 years from now they have to start thinking about that and how they can tackle the Germans in that aspect.

^ or perhaps Genesis is intentionally sandbagging the G70 facelift in an effort to push people towards the GV70/80, etc. they know the CUV/SUV market is much larger than the sedan share, as it is with every other brand, and they want to get as many GV's on the road as possible to claim their stake of the market. this is really what will establish the brand rather than a few more G70's on the road.

but then i would expect the 2.5 and 3.5 to come online for the next G70 remake in a couple/few years - along with other updates and tech goodies. clearly Genesis did not invest a ton into the '22 refresh, focusing on the GV's. but as the brand grows, this may pay off for much better things for the next G70 update. that, or Genesis will kill off one or more of their sedans as they become obsolete with the GV's taking over. we'll see. but if they did, i could see them killing off the G70 and G90 since the G80 strikes a decent balance. depends how sporting they want their brand image to be i suppose.

maybe they introduce a coupe to offset the loss of the G70's sporting intentions. this would expand their reach further and provide some prestige which flagship coupes tend to provide (see: lexus).

Very common for BMW to release a mid-cycle refresh with the old engine and switch one model year later to an upgraded engine. Good marketing as it gets a group of people the first year that want the new look, then they get another bump the next year with the new engine. The remaining years they bring out special editions or add past optional features to the standards to keep the value up.

I wouldn't be surprised if Genesis does the same.

Yeah, I agree this is likely the strategy. The 3.3T has lots of power and there is no reason to release the 3.5T with 10 more HP. It would make much more sense to wait for the next full model and release the 3.5T with 400+ HP and/or have a 3.5T hybrid with even more.

I think Genesis did a fine job upgrading the G70, while not alienating current owners. I really like the facelift but not enough to move to it. New buyers will love it. I think the next G70 will be amazing and very likely my next car.

My take is that it is a cost/limited resources thing.

The engineers working on Genesis have a lot on their table - GV70, G70 estate, eG80, eGV70, dedicated BEV CUV, sport trim, next gen G90, etc. - where using precious engineering resources to upgrade the engine(s) for the G70 was a low priority (the G80 Sport purportedly had been pushed back due to the eG80 getting priority), esp. if an all new G70 is on the horizon.

Can't see them killing off the G90; it's too big a $$-maker in Korea and it may do well in China when Genesis launches there.

Speaking of launches, the plan is for Genesis to launch in Europe next year.

More likely to discontinue the G70 which doesn't sell particularly well in Korea; but may be too important for the European market with the estate bodystyle, but crossovers are also taking over in Europe.

Think they'd much rather keep the G70 around rather than replace it with a coupe (which don't sell); if they bring the Essentia to production, likely will be turned into a 4-door coupe.

Having a performance sub-brand becomes a bit superfluous when your electric powertrain will blow away TTV8s.

I hear you on the engineering resources, but given that the work was already done for its platform-mate to receive the 2.5T, I would think that they could've done the same for the G70 without much cost. Can't speak to the 3.5T, of course, since the Stinger didn't get that either.

I would be absolutely shocked if the G70 is ever discontinued. The compact sports sedan segment is the bread and butter of the luxury car world, they can't not play in that field and be taken seriously IMO. Definitely won't be replaced with a coupe, but I believe they have "GT70" trademarked, so a supplementary coupe is hopefully in the pipeline.

As for the Essentia, I don't see them turning it into a four-door coupe, as it would likely be too close in size to the eG80. It would likely function as a halo vehicle for the brand to attempt to make people take notice and see Genesis as "cool," which would be hugely valuable. A car like that serves the purpose of getting people into the showroom and then selling them on the normal models.

Another thing I noticed when building the car on the SK site...looks like they took away the gray stitching.

I have not played with every color combo...but looks like they only allow red.

If gray stitching does not come to NA...and forced with red...I will go to the GV70 (if gray stitching) or Audi. I cannot stand (with a serious passion) having red in my car. No offense to anyone.

That's why I went on such an insane hunt to get my current car.

Update: I just tried every color combo on the Sport. No gray stitching. To add...if you want black seats in any exterior color you have to have red stitching. Who gets a f'ing brown car that has red stitching on the inside. GROSS. And those red seat belts are the most hideous thing I have ever seen. Fingers crossed for NA market. Bring back Luc !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This review in Korean but the new 3.3T AWD Sport looks great in Adriatic Blue. I really like the new Sport wheels. I wasn't a fan of them at first but I think they compliment the new look.

^ yeah, not feeling those wheels. too busy IMO. also not digging the red seatbelts. i doubt NA will get them. most of the interior, seats, etc look the same except for dash tech. the aluminum trim is now 'scalloped' which is interesting.

what irritates me when i see the KDM 2.0T trim is they got dual exhaust tips for the 2019+ models. NA never got that. theirs look so much better. no idea why Genesis didn't carry that over to NA markets.

The B roll footage of the G70 driving around looks great. So much Essentia vibes. Why must it look so bad when you get a closer look though... I just wish the headlight housings were less visible or more narrow.

It will be much better for the RWD in dry conditions.

Not a fan of red seat belts. The grill redesign I’m still not sure I like? Other changes, head lights and such I can live with. Digital dash is nice. Appears front head rest may adjust fwd to aft, would like those on US versions.

Seems like they lowered the seats in the rear and read somewhere that they eeked out a little more knee room with deeper carve-outs at the back of the front seats.

One of the biggest issues was the lack of room at the footwell, but don't know if they tried to address that at all.

In theory...if your entire torso is slightly shifted back...your feet don’t have to go under the front seat as far LOL
