  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have detected a noise problem which I think is most likely in all 3.8 Genesis models. (Possibly could be in V-8 also.) I had the service manager at my dealer check with two 3.8 models on his lot and he was able to duplicate it. I would like some feedback from you as to whether you can detect the noise and, if so, what you think the source of the noise is.
Here is how you get the noise to appear: Drive at around 55 mph and switch to manual shift and then downshift to 7th gear. Accelerate slowly up through 65 -70 mph. See if you don't detect a high pitch whine around 62 to 65 mph. It then dies off as you move past this speed. I've found the whine is most evident if the car is under load going up an incline when you are accelerating up through the 60s. The whine appears to be coming from the transmission.

Don't be in 7th at 55 and try to accelerate?

There was a similar issue on my motorcycle...in a high gear, at 55 mph - there would be a whine of sorts. For my bike - it was a normal sound. the Sraight Cut gears would whine / resonate in top gear at that speed.

I either lived with it... or dropped in to 3rd and twisted the wick, until 90...then used a cruising gear.

7th gear is really an overdrive gear, not meant to be pushing load up an incline with power. Put your stick back in normal mode and leave there. When you stomp on the pedal, your car will know what gear to hop into.

I understand that 7th gear is not for accelerating. That is the scenario I used to duplicate the noise I experienced when I had the car in auto shift and cruise set at 65 mph. I noticed the sound when the vehicle was going up small inclines as the car automatically shifted from 8th gear to 7th to maintain the 65 mph speed. I then tried the manual shift procedure I mentioned to see if I could duplicate it. As you said, it is most likely is intrinsic to the transmission. I just wanted to make sure it was not just a problem with my car. Thanks.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Probably something with the torque converter making that noise in the upper gears.

This is easy to check. Would you who have responded check to see if you detect this whine. If so, with your knowledge, speculate what it may be and whether it is anything to be concerned with? I thank you in advance for your help.

I tried several times to hear a whine while in 7th and accelerating slowly through (and past) 62-65mph from 55. I heard nothing unusual. Only one test was going up a slight incline, I have not been in a position to test a steep incline quite yet.

To put it another way, I didn't hear anything I wouldn't hear in sixth or eighth just at different RPMs, and definitely no whine. In case it matters my vehicle is AWD (which of course also tells you it's a 3.8, at least in the US.)

Hope this helps, though sorry that it's probably not what you were expecting.

My dealer had a Hyundai engineer listen to the whine in a new 2015 3.8. The engineer heard and acknowledged the whine and stated that it is intrinsic to the transmission.

I almost never use the paddles (if you can call em that, more like big plastic buttons). The Genesis trans doesn't respond all that quickly to them anyway, I just leave it to it's own devices or go into Sport mode. My old Infiniti G37s had nice big magnesium paddles which responded quickly and would even blip the throttle on a downshift...

When I'm cruising around 65 etc my car has a slight whine to it - it's actually quite pleasant

Bought my 15 3.8 Ultimate RWD from CarMax. The whine on mine is in Drive mode, regardless of terrain or incline/decline from 60-70mph. Both CarMax techs and our local Genesis dealership techs said it's the rear diff and it's not going to be fixed with a replacement. I wouldnt care so much if I didn't drive a ton between 60-70mph. 😡

my 2015 rwd had the differential replaced to eliminate the whine between 45 and 65. i could play a tune with it and now its gone.

Hmmm, that's good to know. I'll have to bug my dealership again. If not, the next Genesis dealership is 2 1/2 hours and a state over from me. I hate my local service department.

The whine will go if you replace the diff.. I had the same experience in Dubai and the dealership replaced it and its totally fine

Should be covered under the power train warranty?

Hi Husam, I just got a 2018 G80 in the UAE, and have been experiencing the whining noise. The car is not under warranty since it is Korean import. Can you please tell me if you have the same sound as this video, and how much did the dealership charge to replace it?
