Do you care about the infotainment, Android Auto/Apple Carplay?

Hello everyone,,
I don't drive but most of my friends use their phones as their main infotainment. They have it mounted on the dash and use it for everything including music, navigation, hands-free calls, everything.
No one I know regularly uses Android Auto/Apple Carplay.
It seems that many people find AA/ACP to be glitchy and unresponsive from time to time. One of my friends says AA constantly crashes for him and he doesn't find it appealing otherwise.
Sometimes people base their car purchases on the infotainment system.
Car reviewers make such a big deal about infotainment. A huge part of their interior review is infotainment coverage.
So, do you use your infotainment regularly or do you rely on your phone????

Infotainment options plus USB for music. Bluetooth connection for calls/text. I am a light driver of about 5k-6k miles per year. Carplay is of limited value.

I've had my car just over 3 years. I've used Android Auto twice but did not find it anything special for navigation. I know others love it but no value for me.

I exclusively use CarPlay and will never buy another vehicle without it, I have even retrofitted an after market headunit in my hot rod and my brothers ‘95 4Runner with it.

as far as Android Auto, from everyone I know that uses an Android have complained that AA is glitchy and most of them hate it.

CarPlay from my experience in 4 cars and 2 after market units has no Issues.

and I’m over 50 years old.

Hey, I got rid of my rotary phone months ago!. You have a point though, probably of less value to us over 70.

My 2015 Genesis Ultimate does not have AA/ACP, however I do have an aftermarket Sony AA/ACP in my 2006 Cadillac Escalade. In all honesty, I really am not impressed with AA/ACP aside from the free Google navigation maps. The maps are a upgrade to the 2006 Escalade stock radio, but I like my recently upgraded 13.5 Genesis navigation system better.

My one complaint is that my 2015 Genesis radio does not have album art when i play my music over Bluetooth, however I usually leave the navigation map displayed on screen when I stream music so it really does not matter in my case that much. AA/ACP does display album art in my Cadillac on the Sony radio while streaming music, but I usually keep it on the navigation display as well so big deal.

AA/ACP just modernized my older 2006 SUV, but it is not all that impressive over the Ultimate Genesis system without it in my opinion.

Genesis Ultimate navigation system maps are beautiful especially in 3D.

The Sony AA/ACP in my 2006 Escalade. Very basic Google maps, but better than what it had stock.

Mainly use AA because of Waze - need to know where the po-pos are.
Also nice to have music, audio books, podcasts on the main screen and the voice slave can be summoned from the button on the steering wheel.
I've stopped updating Genesis maps, no more bugs and issues to deal with since I am already out of warranty for the head unit (60K kms).

I've used CarPlay in my wife's Accord and wouldn't want another vehicle without it. Among other things, it lets me choose whichever mapping software I prefer with no need to wait for updates. I hope Genesis eventually implements wireless CarPlay across the line, which would save the extra step of connecting the phone each time I get in the car.

I have no use for AA. I just don't like it. On a trip, I use the Genesis map and my phone has Waze for traffic, cops, etc. and Pandora for entertainment. It is only connected with blue tooth to the car.
Age 77 years old. It is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

Seems like a trivial thing, but I don’t use CarPlay solely because I would have to physically plug in my phone. I like the wireless charging mat too much and Bluetooth meets my needs.

I agree. Folks will say it’s so easy to plug in but it’s never as easy as doing nothing. Leave your phone in your pocket, get in and just drive. No hands, no fuss, no muss.

I use a wireless car2play device in my G80, never had an issue, get in the car carplay connects wirelessly.

I won’t use the g80 QI charger, it overheats my phone, and I get the “phone needs to cool down” warning.. if I need to charge which I seldom do, I just plug in to the power only USB in the center console.

I use AA literally every time I drive my car. Even if it's just for a short trip; just in case I need Nav to find a place that has a location that I may be unsure of, I prefer AA. Much easier to say something along the lines of:

"Navigate to the nearest bail bondsman"
"Navigate to the nearest Tasty Freeze"

..etc.

Have had opportunity to use AA on last two ford f150's but found it cumbersome and of no use, much prefer auto system nav and music. Glad it is not avail on 2017 g80 ultimate!

You plug it in to the CarPlay usb on the car, Attach your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the phone to the dongle and you’re done.. takes 2 minutes.

If you have to update the firmware you go to your phone browser (safari) and to the device IP address (you can see it in the wi-if info on the phone) and it uses your data plan to download the update and then the Wi-Fi to send it to the dongle.


There is about a 30 second delay when you start the car before it connects if your phone is connected to another Wi-Fi (your house for example). Beyond that it works flawless.
