  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have to say it, the G70 needs a new transmission ASAP

I own a beautiful White colored G70 (3.3 V6); let me tell you, it’s a hell of a car. It’s got launch control and it’s 365HP and 376TQ put a smile on your face. However you can’t just expect an engine to do all the work for you and perform like butter when you’ve neglected it’s transmission?(It’s name by itself is a testament to what’s it’s designed to do in the first place, it transmits the power from the engine to the wheels and how effectively it can do that job varies.) Likewise, Hyundai’s in-house designed 8-speed automatic transmission is pure dogshit, holy Hell I’m not even exaggerating, it needs a ZF 8 speed transmission or maybe even the Veloster’s Dual-Clutch transmission. I for the life of me can’t understand why they thought this 8 speed would be adequate for a performance model, this car was designed to compete with likes of the C class and they gave it an automatic that practically granny shifts through the gears. When on full throttle, each gear switch sends the dial back to 4500RPM which means the engine has to keep working harder and this causes drivetrain loss, a dual clutch or even a properly designed automatic (*cough cough* the ZF 8 speed) can keep the engine reving easily at 5300-5400RPM all while staying close to it’s next shift point. This 8 speed that my G70 came with is about the only complaint I have with it and they need to change that. I’ll show a comparison between a pull I did and one done in Alfa Romeo with a ZF 8 speed and the difference will be seen evidently.

I happen to think the tranny is very good. Now the transmission in my Red Sport, that was a POS. You are comparing apples and oranges here. Sell it.
I’m happy with my G70, just think had Hyundai maybe fitted it with say the Veloster’s dual clutch then I’d be happy. This 8 speed that Hyundai developed is really holding that 3.3t’s potential back.

Stupidest post on this entire board probably. All 4 of them.
I’m sorry you don’t know how transmissions function/operate. Clearly my post didn’t dumb it down for you enough, find a page on Wikipedia or something and have someone hold your hand and read you “word for word” on the information that you clearly don’t know.

The trans is the weakest point of the entire car IMO but certainly not judging it because of what RPMs the car hits during shifts. That’s determined by gearing. I’ve driven tons of autos in my life, and the G70 is not the best but it’s way far from the worst either.

Yes see that was my initial point, the car is beautiful in every way to me and I’m a mopar fanboy that chose a Genesis as his first “performance” vehicle because I found the car that appeasing to me; however, the transmission is this car’s achilles’ heel.

Fair enough. It’s just that your RPMs and shifting point was a little off, so that definitely threw people off your initial point. Along with explaining what a transmission is to people already on a car forum :p

Yes, the transmission is the weakest point of a very overall strong car. But it’s definitely due to transmission tuning, something they could fix or iterate on. Along with tuning companies like LAP3 now able to adjust things like launch control, the future is bright for the G70

It look's like the gearing is similar to the spread in the V8 G80 which has existed since well before the G70 was developed, I wonder if they didn't make enough changes to the shift mapping.

Have you tried changing drove modes? One of the changes with drive modes is shift points.

I though the transmission was really laze till I got a throttle by wire pedal controller, made a huge difference in shift behavior.

Why the veloster's? The G70 already has dual clutch.

The G70 does not have a dual clutch transmission....

The G70 does not have a dual clutch transmission....
It may not be called a DCT, but it does have dual clutches.

Here is the video of it's specs upon release 11 years ago :

Gearing:

Veloster:
3.7142.2612.1741.6210.9270.7670.8780.698

G70:
3.6652.3961.6101.1901.0000.8260.6430.556

These all use that ^ gearing. The gearing looks like it was setup for the V8 where there is a pretty tall step into 3rd.

Genesis G70 3.3T
Genesis G80 3.3T/3.5T/5.0L
Genesis G90 4.6L/5.0L
Hyundai Equus 4.6L/5.0L
Hyundai Genesis 4.6L/5.0L
Kia Stinger 3.3L

I know in my V8 G80, it will drop from 8th to 3rd in one quick shift if I nail the throttle .

From my understanding: multiple clutches doesn’t equal dual clutch. Any auto transmission uses a series of clutch packs. A DCT however has two input shafts attached to those clutches, usually generating the improvements seen from them. Although the ratios may be somewhat similar in some gears, a DCT would outshift our normal auto trans when it comes down to pure shift times

Here is a c43 AMG 2020 (385 HP), right around the same horsepower and torque as the G70; matter of fact, this exact car is what the G70 primarily competes with. You can easily notice how direct precise the DCT shifts vs The G70 standard 8 speed auto.

But to say the least, Hyundai’s 8 speed auto is not a DCT. I understand conserving cost and not branching out to other companies to develop their transmissions for them but the Veloster’s 8 speed DCT would do fine. I’ve often wondered and hypothesized what a Veloster’s tranny swap to a G70 would cost and if it would indeed function properly.
