Real World MPG Numbers?

Refilled my tank for the first time today. I put 16.5 gallons in after 380 miles giving 23.0 mpg. That tank was 65% highway and 35% city. Not bad I'd say!

GenesisBlog: I was also a BMW owner (2006 530i) and I can honestly tell you without any reservations that I LOVE my Genesis with the Tech. Pckg.

A comparable BMW 535i now would be in the $58,500 $60,000 range and it can't compare with the interior volume, quite interior and attention grabbing my Genesis gets. I just bought and installed the "Wing" emblem on the trunk and the "Wing" emblemed hubcabs - which prompted a young guy to come up to me and say "I sought this was a Bentley, but then I looked closer at the "Wing" emblem and read Genesis! What a gorgeous car! Are you happy?

So, let us know if you do lease/purchase a Genesis.

Final drive must be much taller for the V8. Easy to check...

V6: 3.909:1
V8: 3.133:1

Multiply these by the above ratios to get the overall ratio.

For top gear:
V6: 2.29
V8: 2.16

So the V8 will turn slightly fewer RPM on the highway.

Made another 100 mile freeway run last night, with speeds ranging from 65 - 85 MPH. I reset the MPG calculator as I took off, and it was reading 28.1 when I pulled into the driveway. A very respectable number, indeed...

Bang on the official Hwy estimate... Nice to know something is accurate for a change.

Computer: 23.8 Actual: 24.2

2nd leg 100% interstate, cruise on, 2200ppm, 75mph
Computer 26.2 Actual: 25.4

Turned 1000mi on 2nd leg

Not knowing for sure, but I would guess that it has to do with how the G's computer rounds the actual figure (in other words, to how many digits after the decimal point), as compared to how we may actually enter the figures into a calculator. The discrepancy in the figures indicates to me that this is probably the reason. We would be more inclined to input maybe one or two digits (to the tenth or to the one-hundredths), and the computer may actually compute it out to 10, 20 or more digits--even though it doesn't show on the dash.

EPA estimates, and our own driving habits, number of passengers, terrain, use of air conditioning or open windows, whether in traffic or on the open road, etc....all of these things dramatically affect our gas mileage, small as the number difference may actually be....thus the 'wisdom' of a certain presidential candidate telling us to check our air pressure....when maybe it's "his" air pressure that should be checked....(and I'm not referring to his tires...).

I'm getting consistently 25-27 hwy., and approx. 20 combined. For a car of this size/power, etc., I'm very pleased. I got the same numbers from my slightly lesser-powered Azera (263 hp, 3.8V6 front-wheel drive), and also from a previous Mazda Millenia (2.5V6...170-ish hp, if memory serves)...which was considerably under-powered, IMO. I should note that, particularly in the warmer weather (about 9 mos/year in East Tennessee), I typically drive with the A/C on. With the compressor disengaged in cooler weather, I would expect the numbers to improve slightly.

First two tanks on my 3.8, calculated manually: 22.8 in town (not much stop and go, good roads), 26.6 on mostly highway run (lots of it between 65-80 mph). The dash reading over those periods was not far off. Still a laugh to see the dash readings at the beginning of the tank,though. Pull out from the gas station, and it shows 5 mpg, then go a nice steady stretch and it shows I was topping 30 mpg.

Some of my worst driving memories are driving a stick in Seattle and San Fran. Nothing like sitting at a light and then seeing someone pull up on your bumper.

Been there, done that in both cities--or rather, had it done to me when I was driving an MGB back in the distant days of my youth. First new car was also first stick. Lots of fun then, but not more than the Gennie now!

Do you mind a reply from a 4.6 owner? 18-19 mpg commuting, half of it stop-and-go. 30 on road trips. Both figures are comparable to what I was getting in my '92 Ford Taurus wagon.

For those familiar with I-85 through North Carolina, you'll know the average speed is 72-80 mph. At 72-75 mph I get 31-32 mpg. Faster than that, mileage dropped off to 28-29 mpg.
