I brought my car in for this sound and they said they checked it out but it was normal and blah blah blah. However, once I got the car back, the noise was gone. My theory was that just the act of messing with it might have quieted it down.
If you want to take a crack at it (and I haven't done this personally), the steering U-joint is behind the firewall and there's a little plate covering it. You can probably unbolt that plate and then get access to loosen/tighten the U-joint bolt and spray it with some WD-40 or something. Worth a shot if it's bothering you.
