^awesome news! Sad it took this to be acknowledged but glad you got it taken care of. I’ll be pointing to this when I go in about mine
I just left them crap reviews. Never setting foot at the other dealers again. It’s clear now they just didn’t want to do their jobs.Really glad you got this resolved...
Be sure to update the naysayer dealers and let them know that there is a good one out there, after all.
I just thought it would be good to let them know what the problem was, specifically, since they were so poorly equipped to diagnose a fairly simple problem, lacking in customer support and concern, and to help prevent them from losing another customer due to careless disregard. There... I feel better.
UPDATE (AND IT'S GOOD NEWS THIS TIME!)
I took it to another dealer, this time, Genesis of Oak Park, and they fixed the issue. Toddasaurus, you were both right and wrong about what it could be. It was not the clock spring as initially suspected, but something was definitely loose from the factory, which is another possibility you mentioned.
Turns out that parts of the steering shaft, behind the firewall, were rubbing on the firewall, and a steering shaft coupler was loose. They repositioned and re-torqued the coupler, which made the noise and popping-in-hands feeling go away. In fact, the steering feels better than when the car was new. In "Normal Mode" the steering is a bit less light than before, but I like that. Likely because there is now less play in the steering shaft overall.
On a test drive the mechanic also noticed my pulsating brakes, something a couple of other dealers refused to acknowledge. They resurfaced all my rotors, and the braking is much smoother. I will do the break-in/bedding procedure as soon as weather and traffic allow.
The whole time they were working on it, I had a G80 loaner. And wow, that NA V6 is SMOOTH. The 3.3T sounds like a rough 4 cylinder in comparison. The 3.8 has no guts, though, and the 3.3T is, of course, way more fun. The G80 feature I most wish the G70 had is the double pane front and side glass. That car had almost no wind noise, even at 80 MPH.
I am 99% certain it's the steering wheel clock spring. The thread TinsleyC posted above, and countless BMW threads confirm the symptoms, sound, and feel I am getting from the wheel. Today, the service adviser claimed he could not hear or feel anything. They cannot get to my car until Thursday, as their Hyundai techs are slammed with work, though he did promise they would look at everything, including the mechanisms behind the steering wheel.
Pretty disappointed, as the car only has 4,668 mostly highway miles on it right now. I'm just hoping that the techs don't come back with another "cannot reproduce/this is normal." I've never had this issue pop up on any car I've owned, same with friends and family. I now know a lot about steering assemblies, though...so that's cool, I guess.
Interesting, I didn't experience any throttle input lag. In fact, the gas pedal/engine seemed more responsive from a stop to 10mph than the G70. This was a 2019 G80, though, so it could have slightly different throttle mapping from the 2017. This could also have been me being completely fooled/smitten with the NA smoothness.Happy to hear you found a good dealer and fixed everything. Also thanks for giving us all an update in case we face the same issue.
Speaking about the G80, that V6 is buttery smooth but the thing that annoyed me the most while I owned it was the throttle input lag. You are right about the double pane glass, that was really nice and I miss that vault like silence. You can also feel the 4500 lbs whereas the G70 masks the weight much better.
The V8 is even smoother!Interesting, I didn't experience any throttle input lag. In fact, the gas pedal/engine seemed more responsive from a stop to 10mph than the G70. I can imagine. I would absolutely lose my s**t if they made a G70 sized car with an NA V8. I think the Lexus IS F from like 2012 was the last one like that (under 188 inches in total length, 4 doors, and a V8).The V8 is even smoother!
That would be nice! The v8 was not on my radar when I started looking at a newer vehicles. Once I drove it ,WOW!I can imagine. It is a little laggy, but in my case it's more about pedal travel. On my prior car, a G37, 50% of the power was in the first 1/5th of the pedal push, and half way in was full-tilt boogie.Interesting, I didn't experience any throttle input lag.
Mine is doing the same, but I’ve been waiting for it to either get worse or my oil change to come up before I bring it in. I hope to get it looked at soon so I can share what my dealership finds. There are no other symptoms but the sound, no vibration that matches the clicks or anything. It’s weird.I am getting desperate with this issue. The dealer looked at it twice, did not find anything, they tell me that the clockspring is intact and they even compared to the steering of another G70 to be sure nothing was different. They lubricated it. Each time it is perfect for a few days and then the noise comes back, not better or worse, just there? It is a faint creaking that is audible when you turn the wheel each direction to about 90 degrees.Nothing really bad, but annoying enough to make me cringe every time I take the car.
Update: my steering wheel is no longer making this sound. I wanted to drive it for a couple weeks before I confirmed it was actually gone. I have no clue why it stopped, because it was still doing it (very noticeably) when daytime temps were hitting 80 several weeks ago so dont think its weather related. Ill just have to wait for it to come back so they can recreate it. I have an oil change scheduled for Friday where I was going to bring it up, but got a new issue with my rearview mirror anyways. ce la vieMine is doing the same, but I’ve been waiting for it to either get worse or my oil change to come up before I bring it in. Oh wow. What’s wrong with the rear view mirror? Seems like something they couldn’t possibly screw up. (Though they do surprise me every week).Update: my steering wheel is no longer making this sound.
