If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hard shift in 2017 G80

"2017 G80" - did you ever get this resolved?

"2017 G80" - did you ever get this resolved?

Had a hearing with BBB, Genesis Rep and myself. I presented the various posts about other G80 owners having the same or similar issues. I presented a copy of the manual explaining the procedure to take when there is a hard shift. I presented documentation from two dealership mechanic, one of which Genesis referred me to stating they had test drove my car and felt the hard shift. Keep in mind my G80 has been in the shop over 7 times and they have reset the transmission adapter 6 of those times.

Okay I'm sorry, back to your question.............the lawyer for BBB and Genesis rep concluded that what I have been experiencing is the G80 getting use to my husband and I driving patterns and has nothing to do with the transmission. So nothing happened and my 80 is worse than it was before. They also informed me that I was pass the Lemon Law so I could not consider my G80 a Lemon.

This is the worse experience I have ever had with a car and believe me I will not recommend the G80 is NO ONE. To those who own a G80 and have not had any problem, awesome for you and I pray you will not have to go through what I am going through now.

Sorry to babble on but this is so frustrating.

Thank you for the detailed update. So sorry you're still having this issue. Learning how you drive? That's the most lame excuse I've heard!

Maybe you should take it to a big empty parking lot at turn off the traction control and do some high speed circular burn-outs to teach that tranny a lesson. Seriously. Maybe you'll shake something loose in there. Get the trans fluid flushed.

Guess you could always sell the car but if you bought it new, you'll take a big depreciation hit. Better yet, trade it to the dealer that says nothing is wrong with it.

Just another data point. Mine (G80 3.8 AWD) seems to have a slight delayed upshift from 2-3 and 4-5. Only overtly noticable under light acceleration i.e. slowing down to take a corner around 20mph then accel.
I also notice it with ACC on in stop/go traffic.

Oddly I only notice it in standard drive mode, not eco or sport in similar driving style. Seems like the difference in programming might hide it in those modes.

Funny (depe nding on your perpective) is that I drove the car for a week prior to buying it and didn't notice it happening until after it signed the dotted line :)

I'm tempted to take it to my reputable transmission shop and have them diagnose it for me before I venture into dealer-land.

Believe me it would be a good idea to let your mechanic check it out
I am having a difficult time finding a transmission shop to even take a look at it. So frustrating I am looking into legal advise

That's really too bad. These cars are not all that common, but it's my understanding that this transmission has been around a while.

All I ask is that they acknowledge what they already know, they have transmission issues with some G80

Sorry to break it to you my friend but the dealership is lying to you. There are two kinds of tranny fluid replacement. Drain and refill and force flush. The latter requires about 15 bottles of fluid whereas a simple drain and refill only takes about 4.

You overheat the tranny when you let the car idle for more than 15 mins. Its the stagnation and lack of a fluid exchange cooler that heats everything up. Guys in the shop don't know anything when it comes to problem solving. They don't engineer cars.
I have not flushed the ATF in my car but i'm considering it -- its about 89K miles now.
Up shifting from 4th to 5th is acting up -- in normal drive mode. Basically when I accelerate gently, its perfect; but with half throttle, the up shift from 4th to 5th (sometimes from 5th to 6th) is delayed a bit you'll feel it. Hope that a flush will fix the issue unless its a solenoid issue. What are your thoughts?

in my 4.6 case, a full flush got me around 10k miles before it started acting up again, where by the gear box got stuck in 6th gear, on a long highway drive, Then the gear box reset to normal operation all by itself after 4 hours,

Sadly, she was replaced by the 2016 3.8 the very next day. 😋

I am experiencing a hard shift in my transmission. Have documentation of at least two times the tech witness the hard shift during test drive and they reset something called a transmission adapter valve which now the hard shift is more frequent. They reset the adapter 5 times. Genesis is not taking this issue seriously which is so disappointing. Has anyone had this issue?
I too have a 2017 g80 that’s doing the exact same thing. Hard shift from 2 to 3 and 4 to 5. Dealer had it for two weeks with no loaner. I had to borrow a car and it is worse than it was before I took it to them. There should be a recall on these transmissions. If anyone has had the same issue that has been resolved please post it.

I'm shocked they would not give you a loaner... did you buy it new?

No I bought it used with 49,000 miles. It ran better than new for about 4 months. Then this started. The dealership I bought it from who had it for two weeks claim they don’t have any loaners available. So I’m gonna take it to a different dealership that has their loaner policy on their website. It doesn’t specify new or used so I’m hoping to not only get a loaner but also to have my trans fixed. I’ll definitely post the outcome...

Yes, even as a pre-owned you should get the 5yr/60k drivetrain warranty.

It amazes me that a Genesis dealer would not have a loaner available, considering how offering free loaners is part of their corporate plan. My guess is that they didn't want to give you one, knowing it would be a lengthy repair and they didn't want to be out of a free loaner for that long.

Yes, my 2017 G80 was doing the same thing. 2nd owner, 37500 miles, awd. Conicelli Genesis is replacing the transmission. Located in norristown pa. No questions asked. They have replaced several 17 G80’s transmissions. Apparently replacement fixes the problem. Hope this helps. Mike

Took it to a different dealership last week. Got a loaner 😁 and 2 days later got a call from the service advisor saying that the technician wasn’t able to duplicate the issue. But I asked him to tell the technician to drive the car and then let it idle for about 15 min and then drive it again. And I informed him about the TSB. Low and behold, today I received a voicemail saying that they are contacting Hyundai to get the o.k. to replace the transmission. I believe the TSB is what led them to that decision. I would tell everyone having this same issue to print out the TSB and take it with you to the dealership and don’t accept nothing less than a new transmission! And a loaner while you wait!

I have the same problem with my genesis 2015 and yesterday i was driving it and everything was fine then I tried to drive again and my genesis won’t drive at all when I put it on D it only drives on R reverse only ,my problem is I bought it from the auction 3 years ago and the mileage now is 99000k I had to tow it to the mechanic shop he told the hard shifting and the transmission must be replaced I think I might get a used transmission from eBay , do you think genesis would or might replace it for me

I doubt it, since the 10/100,000 warranty only applies to first owner. Otherwise it's 5/60,000 to you.

I was thinking the same as TinsleyC. With 99,000 miles you would have to be the first owner to still be covered under the warranty.
