If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hard shift in 2017 G80

yep

Just attaching a copy of the TSB. Seems like a short time window of vehicles affected, seems like they would have recalled those.

Had a similar issue (hard shifts 2-3 & 4-5) w/my 2017 3.8 AWD; ~ 66K miles. Thankfully, included an extended warranty upon point of purchase back in 2021. Brought into my local dealer (Ricart- Columbus, OH), and agreed transmission replacement was directive - approved by warranty - was w/out my car ~ a month but rec'd a 2023 G70 3.3T Sport Prestige as a loaner (recently returned as of 5/22/23), and only out $200 (cost of work/labor for reman transmission, well over $6800). All smooth shifting now, and had my income been more to justify it, would've seriously considered purchasing that G70 - quite a little road rocket!

I finally have my appointment in a couple of weeks, I’m almost positive my aftermarket warranty will cover the replacement if that’s what’s needed.
Dealership will at least take a look at it

My 2015 5.0 is having this issue. It’s very intermittent and of course never happens when Hyundai tech is test driving it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Just following up on this. Eventually things got worse. The shifting made driving unbearable and it would hesitate for a few seconds before shifting into reverse. Had to replace transmission at my cost, 10k$ CAD

I am experiencing a hard shift in my transmission. Have documentation of at least two times the tech witness the hard shift during test drive and they reset something called a transmission adapter valve which now the hard shift is more frequent. They reset the adapter 5 times. Genesis is not taking this issue seriously which is so disappointing. Has anyone had this issue?
yes Just experienced this past 6 months changed to higher grade fuel and continued after a few months. I car serviced and tech experienced the test drive so the automatic transmission fluid exchanged, so far so good.

I definitely share your frustration. I love my G80, but am so frustrated that they're aware of the issue, issued a service bulletin about it and sent it out to dealers and shops and now acting like it doesn't exist when it's in black and white. It's even more frustrating that government agencies like the NHTSA who also posted on their website was no help with making them correct such a dangerous issue. If they're gonna be able to sell these cars in the years that are effected they should have to be safe.

Send help for what to do with transmission

Hi All - 2017 G80 owner 3.8. Having a lot of similar issues experienced in the chat so far of hard shifts 3-4, and 5-6. I have 102k miles on it and bought at 38k. The dealership proposed a $10k fix with replacement of transmission with a 12k / 1 year warranty. Since their quote I have changed the transmission fluid and added TransX but haven't had any progress. Next on my list would be the Solinoids but not seeing that it has helped fixed the problem long-term and I am a bit nervous to throw more money at the problem.

Options are:
a) Continue driving it in hopes it doesn't get worse and try to trade in at end of year (ideal)
b) Change the Solinoids (~$1.5k) and hope it helps and get another 20-30k miles out of it (less ideal)
c) Replace the transmission (~$10K) and get another 50k miles out of it hopefully (least ideal)

Would love any thoughts on how I should proceed from all my Genesis experts!

d) Change the Solenoids and the full valve body. It worked for my 2015 Genesis 3.8L. Good luck.

Is there data on long term reliability of the solenoid replacement? I thought that was THE fix.

Yes I'm experiencing the same issue

Look at the post by TinsleyC in this thread dated Apr 15, 2023. Time for me to confront Genesis concerning this issue as well.

I have a 2017 G80 3.8 Ultimate AWD with 103K miles on it. It started this shifting issue around 80 - 85K miles. Purchased it used at 34K miles so the warranty was up at 60K miles. I had the transmission fluid changed at 85K miles a year ago, it improved the shifting a bit but over time it is coming back. It gets worse when it is warm outside and you have been driving stop and go. I am having a hard time finding anyone who will even look at it. Genesis dealer nearby lost their franchise, it's now 2 hours to closest one. I don't really want to go there out of warranty anyway. Local Hyundai dealer wont touch my car for anything, not even the fluid change. I had a local shop look at the transmission TSB for the solenoids and they said they didn't want to touch it. Otherwise I have loved the car. I had a leaking water pump replaced under warranty when I first got it, otherwise just regular maintenance until this month when the driver's door lock actuator went out and I am having the rear sway bar end links replaced next week due to clunking underneath. Finding someone willing to fix the door was a pain, and expensive. I wouldn't have though Genesis would be such a pain in the ass for repairs. It will for sure be the last Genesis I get unless the dealer network improves. Carmax offer on trade was $7600. For that I think I'll just live with it until it dies.

I have a 2017 Genesis G80. Interesting you should mention this. The Genesis dealer here (Montgomery) was shut down for over 2 years and now recently returned at the beginning of 2025. Re-addressed the transmission issue and provided the Genesis TSB print out to them. In short, since I just passed the 150,000 mile mark they suggest replacing the transmission vs fixing it. Mind you I tried to get them to address this when the dealer was here pre-Covid era however they "could not reproduce the problem to even address it". I could. It just took 2 - days of city driving before the transmission would shift hard. Anyway, they provided me an estimate for replacing the transmission. Think I will just tough this out until ....

Curious how you would finish your sentence.

I wonder why these dealerships are reluctant to work on the transmission. Could it be that they have a hard time getting reimbursed from Hyundai corporate? Or are they not confident in their technicians talent?

I have a 2017 G80 and I am having the same shifting issues. I bought the car with 14k and I now have 65k. Mine started not too long ago and the car has been dealer serviced. I had the transmission service done and it improved slightly. The dealer reset the adaptive values and that helped for a short amount of time and they informed me the transmission had to be replaced for about $9300. Genesis apparently only performs replacements, not transmission repairs unless it is the valve body, that they can do. After hearing about so many others having this issue and locating a service bulletin I found here I decided to contact Genesis directly. I had to go through 2 managers before I got anywhere. They kept trying to say the bulletin was not for my vin#. I explained to them that with so many others having this issue, Genesis needs to expand to other vin numbers. I asked who I had to speak to so that mine would be documented. They decide to escalate the matter and I am expecting a call in a few days. I have enjoyed the car but I have not been happy since losing the connected service. I only had the car for 1 year before this occurred.

Once I hear back I will provide an update.

Since this seems to happen more on the 2017 and 2018, I'm curious what changes were made to the transmission for 2019.

I wonder if those details are documented anywhere.
