How did you come to buy your G70?

Funny, we are in the process of buying a 2022 G70, but it has to be white. Wanted white interior also but it didn't come with the white. Ended up with black with red stitching interior. Should be hear in a couple of weeks. They have a white in the showroom with tan interior, but didn't like it much.
Wow, I didn't know that they were already shipping the 22s; where are you located?

My search for a new car came about because my 3 series lease was coming to an end in late 2018. I bought the 3 on my last day of work as a sales manager for a local BMW dealer. I had been driving loaner cars for about 3 years so I didn't have a car of my own and picked a 328xi to lease. Nice looking M Sport 2015 in silver but after driving it for almost 3 years I realized that I got no excitement from driving it. It was my 6th 3 series, not including the one my daughter drove that I owned as well. Yes, I was a BMW fan, my wife is on her 4th X series BMW as well.

The new BMW G20 platform was coming so I started reading about it and other vehicles in the class. Disappointed with my most recent 3 series experience I realized I wanted to get back into a car with more power than the turbo 4 I currently had. I have always kept up with the major car magazines and started to research the competitors assuming that nothing would touch the 3 series, the same conclusion I had come to many times before.

The reviews of the G70 were starting to come in and they looked good. It was early in 2018 and my lease was good until the end of October. The new 3 wasn't out yet either, so I had time. It was going to be close, but if I extended my lease a few months, I should be able to test drive both and make a decision.

Then came the Genesis dealership debacle...I kept watch. Being in Colorado, I watched with frustration as east coast states started getting cars but nothing near me. Summer no, fall no, winter and still no Genesis dealerships in Colorado and on to 2019. The BMW M340 was not available either so I extended my lease until February but still no Genesis dealers in CO.

With no dealerships in Colorado, me in need of a new car and my now total obsession with the thought of the G70 after all the great reviews I'd read, it was time to figure out how to see one. The opportunity came when we got my daughter in college a different car. I drove out to LA with the car and took her old 3 back since I needed a car. On the way back, I was able to find a dealer in Vegas that had G70s to drive, woohoo! My first look at the car was a shock, I wasn't expecting to like it that much. I thought it looked good in pictures but was not sure about the front end. That all went away at first glance at the black 3.3T Prestige that was the first one I saw. I still steal glances at my car now and it still makes me smile.

They let me take it out by myself, ends up the GM was using it as his daily driver. After months of reading and obsessing, I had decided I liked the Adriatic Blue with grey interior, and would go with the Prestige pkg if I liked the car. This car had the grey interior as well and it completely sealed that choice for me as well. I was so excited after about 45 minutes in the car that I likely would have bought the black car except for it was rwd.

Now that I knew it was the car, the search began for the Adriatic/grey/3.3T/Prestige/awd. It's March 2019 now and still no dealerships in Colorado so I am looking all over the country. Driving a 2001 BMW convertible in winter/spring in Colorado as my daily driver is not ideal so I press on. I find several of them on the east coast but I want to lease and no one will lease me the car out-of-state. April passes into May, as I'm actually starting to enjoy the old convertible now. I find another exact match in Michigan, still no dealers open in Colorado. I give a call, explain what I want to do and finally someone is willing to do an out-of-state lease!!! I break the news that I have a Hyundai CIrcle certificate from a forum member and they are good with that as well.

After getting all the numbers finalized I start looking into shipping. After several bids and looking at a week or two to get the car I decide that I can't wait. Southwest has a $79 fare, I have a couple of days off, so me and my backpack are on our way to Michigan the next day. The dealer was nice enough to pick me up from the airport and 10am the next day I am standing next to my new car!!! An hour to go through the paperwork and they show my how things work, and I am off.

I decided to split the trip in two, Lincoln the first day and home the next. It was a great bonding drive for me and the car. Highlighted by me testing all the new stuff, the hardest was trusting the stop and go cruise. It definitely took me a while before I let the car come to a full stop on its own. Loved the car ever since, one of the best I've ever had. Since '19 awd Prestige pkg came with the grey 18" wheels, I went on a quest for the 19" that I saw on the black one in Vegas and made that change after finding a set on ebay. 30k miles later and the fun keeps going!

What an ordeal! Glad you liked it after all that...

I'm interested in hearing people's stories about how they came to buy their G70. I'll start...

One day in the summer of 2019, my wife and I were coming home from somewhere, and as we were getting close to home, I saw a car that really caught my eye. I caught up to it, and as I got next to it, I thought, "Wow! What a beautiful car!" (I'd never seen one before, and couldn't identify it.)

As it turned out, the guy was getting off at our exit, and I followed him up the ramp and turned to follow him until we got to a stop light where I could read that it was a Genesis G70. I Googled it as soon as we got home, and read a bunch of glowing reviews, including the write-up at Motor Trend where they named it Car of the Year.

As the weeks went by, I kept seeing more and more mentions of the G70, and more and more glowing reviews, and even though I wasn't really in the market for a new car, I really wanted to take one for a spin.

So I went to Genesis.com, hit the "Find a Retailer" link, and put in my zip code. But neither of the dealers that came up in my area had a G70 in stock (I think the initial search radius was set to 10 miles from my zip. There were only two dealers that close, and neither one had any G70s).

This happened a few more times before I figured out how I could expand my search radius and told it to show me dealers within 100 miles, and all of a sudden, I found several dealers that had G70s in stock (they've changed the dealer search since then; now all you have to do is click the "View More" button and it automatically expands your search radius).

One of the dealers that had several G70s in stock was about 50 miles up the road from here, pretty close to my wife's office. Around this time, my wife's law firm was having their annual food drive, and she asked me if I would help her get a bunch of stuff and take it up to her office with her.

I said sure, but I want to take a little side trip to look at this car afterwards. I assured her that I had no intention of buying the car; I just wanted to take it for a spin and see what all the hype was about. And I really didn't have any intention of buying a car; in fact, I already had a whole list of reasons why I wouldn't be buying a car that day:
  • They only had one 3.3t in stock, and it was white. I've never had a white car, and there's no way I was going to start now.
  • The white 3.3.t they had was a fairly low trim level (I don't remember what it was, exactly, and in fact, I never even saw the white one), so it didn't have a lot of the options that appealed to me.
  • I was very happy with my 2018 Golf R, and was just waiting for it to rack up enough miles that I could chip it.
  • Besides, I'd had the Golf R for less than a year, so I didn't have much (if any) equity in it, and I figured that a Hyundai dealer wasn't likely to give me a very good trade-in on a Volkswagen.
So I had all my reasons lined up... until we got to the dealer. I pulled in and parked next to this gorgeous black G70 with all the whistles and bells (it had the Sport, Elite, and Prestige packages), still wrapped up as if it had just rolled off of the transport truck.

It was love at first sight.

As I was checking it out, a saleslady came out and started chatting me up. She told me that the car had just arrived on the truck that morning and hadn't been prepped yet, and I told her that was OK, I'd be happy to take the white one out for a spin. She said that the white one had been sold a couple of days before, and wasn't there any more.

She offered to take me for a test drive in a 2 liter, but I told her I wasn't interested in doing that; I was only interested in a 3.3t, and I certainly wouldn't be spending that kind of money on a car without taking it for a spin. She checked with her manager, and they got the service department to do a quick prep on the black one, and we took that one out.

I was already in love with the car just from looking at it parked in front of the showroom, but driving it sealed my fate. All of the reasons why I was not buying a car that day (except for the trade-in issues) were out the window:
  • This car wasn't white; it was black, and it was gorgeous.
  • There were no more options available to add to what this car already had.
  • The car put my Golf R to shame, and I knew it would have put it to shame even if the R had been chipped already.
So when she asked me if I liked the G70 enough to talk numbers, I said yes (figuring that the trade-in would kill it, so I still wouldn't be buying this car, and secretly hating that).

Long story short(er), the used car manager went out to look at the Golf, and there was some consultation between him and the manager and the saleslady. Some phone calls were made, and when she came back, the manager was with her. He told me that the Hyundai dealership was owned by the same company that owned the Volkswagen dealer where I'd bought my Golf R (and a couple of GTIs before that), and that they'd love to have the R back, and offered a very generous trade-in.

That was it. There was no way I was getting out of buying the G70 now. They got me some great financing, and with a small down payment, I'd be driving the G70 for about $100 more a month than I was paying on the Golf.

It was a no-brainer. I wrote a check, signed on the dotted line, and came back a couple of days later to pick up my new G70.

How about you? What made you decide to buy yours?
Curious, what time of the year was this, how many miles on your R and 6spd, DCC w/ nav and what year? I ended up selling mine on Carvana for what I felt was a very generous offer as I have been watching the market since June/July of this year and have quoted several times to see what it was across Carvana, Vroom and Carmax along the year.

It was August of 2019 when I bought the G70. I don't remember how many miles were on the R, but it was low (I mentioned in my op that I was waiting until it had enough miles on it to chip it, so probably under 2,000). It was a 2018 with DSG and nav (and all the other possible options). Did you sell an R or a G70 to Carvana?

Sold my 2016 Golf R w dcc and nav, 6spd to Carvana this month. 62k mi. No (performance mods) nor accidents.

Traded in a 2018 Golf R. DSG, Indium Gray. A lot of fun to drive and very quick with launch control active but the G70 3.3t is much more car. No regrets!

so far the g70 has been phenomenal. I just picked up my 2022 prestige awd in uyuni white a couple of weeks ago. I've been eyeing them since the 2019 came out. I really liked the exterior then but even more so now.

I really hope this car lasts similarly like my past vehicles. My R was my first VW and this g70 is my first hyundai.

I had specific criteria:

1) Had to be AWD
2) Had to be "fun to drive" AKA fast and nimble.
3) Had to lean towards the luxury end of the spectrum (Love my tech and sound...and comfort)
4) Had to somewhat fly under the radar

I'm in sales, and I visit all of my clients. So lots of driving. In my line of work, I can't be driving a POS and I also can't be driving an obviously high-end car. That ruled out the Mercedes, BMW's, and Audi's...and obviously anything above. Even a Caddy might be pushing it.

That left the Kia Stinger, Acura TLX type S, and Genesis G70. The G70 won.

Then I couldn't find a new one anywhere! Not even with a search radius of 300 miles! I ended up finding a 2019 3.3t fully loaded with every option and under 12,000 miles on it. The car looked new inside and out. Been totally thrilled with it so far.

Have a Cadillac CT5V Blackwing on order since Sept 21. In preparation of getting the BW sold my 2020 ZL1 Camaro. One delay after another with the BW and I was growing old not owning a sports car of some type. Decided to kill two birds with one stone and traded in our 21 Wrangler on the G70 to hold me till the BW is built. The Wrangler wasnt being used much. I was having difficulty getting into and out of the Wrangler and so was the wife due to a recent surgery. Genesis dealer offered me $2K more for the Wrangler than what I paid a year ago.
So far so good with the G70. Wished it was a little bigger but it seems like fun. Our cooler weather has prevented me from exploring the cars limits but the acceleration is impressive. It also has the best stock stereo I heard, even better than the Alpine system in the Wrangler.
