In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Agreed. For me, if it weren't for the seats, the car would be damn near perfect as an all around daily driver/sports sedan. The seats prevent us from taking it on any long (more than 2-3 hour) trips, which often means we have to take my wife's CX-5, which besides being an SUV, has the second least comfortable seats, haha.
Although they weren't as good as Volvo's, I miss my BMW seats.
That's funny you say that, because I went and test drove a CX5 when I was looking at SUV's for my wife (ended up getting a used Sportage), and I found the partial leather/partial suede seats to be unbearably uncomfortable. It was very disappointing, though I sat in a Grand Touring model in the showroom with the full leather seats, and they seemed to be a bit better.

As for the G70 seats, I think they feel good on short trips but after an hour or two my butt starts to hurt.

We have the Grand Touring Reserve model (because I wanted the turbo). I still wouldn't have gotten it because of the seats, but she liked it and thought the seats were fine, so we got it. I find the sides of the seat bottom too narrow and hard. It always feels like I forgot to take my phone out of my back pocket. After 30k miles they seem to have improved a bit, but I still use a bit of sheepskin to sit on when I'm in it.

My friend has an 8 year old Lexus GS that is silent on the inside. I’m definitely checking them out or another brand because Hyundai/Kia/Genesis isn’t getting another dollar from me if this is his they are going to treat a car with a $53k sticker.
My 2019 G70 3.3T AWD got bought back due to the rattling moonroof. It also had a bunch of other issues, like the steering column. Hyundai dealers have the WORST customer service and techs.

I now have a 2021 Lexus IS 300 AWD. Extremely solid with no weird noises inside. Plus, I love me an NA engine. 0-60 times (~5.7 seconds) are the same as the IS 350 in MotorTrends tests, even though it has 51 more hp. I drove both back to back, and you only notice the extra power of the 350 at speeds past 90 mph past 5k rpm.

It’s quick, not fast. I don’t miss the much faster G70 as much as I thought I would, though. Turns out revving the hell out of a V6 to get power is pretty fun.

The IS 500 with a V8 is also coming out this fall for those that want more power.

Enjoy. Probably has comfier seats. Good luck. Too bad about the G70.

Thanks! And surprisingly, I think I’m one of the few that loved the G70 seats. On the IS 300 and 350 neither the side bolster nor lumbar is adjustable. They’re just OK, comfort wise. Weirdly enough, the Nuluxe leatherette feels better than the base real leather in the G70.

Leather has no uniform quality standards, so some leather you get in cars is just crap. My 2000 Mustang had "leather" seats, which ostensibly came from some sort of bovine, but they presumably used only the most geriatric bull scrotums to cobble them together. I remember sitting in a contemporary Mercedes with its "MB Tex"/Pleather Upholstery, and even in the early aughts it felt downright luxurious in comparison.

Frankly, I hate getting continually forced into leather and would pay a premium for cloth seats but they barely even give you that option anymore.

Okay, rant over.

I’m confused by your comment. The IS300 is not an “NA” engine.

Mine still has a rattle when it warms up a bit. I don't hear it as much when it's really cold out. I'm planning on asking them to look at it during my first service next month. I did still hear it pretty clearly with 4 people in the car so I don't think it's a weight thing.

I also noticed I can kind of recreate the sound by pressing on a certain part of the headliner hard enough. It sounds to me like the suede headliner isn't fully connected/glued to the backing material and it's rubbing together.
I have the same issues, any fix for this?

Ive had alot of success carefully sliding Neoprene foam in between the roof and headliner as you can see in the pictures below. I used a long thin flathead screwdriver and slid it in everywhere I could on the passenger side. All the way from the front, down the passenger side and even towards the back passenger corner of the sunroof. The glue or whatever it is making that tacky sound goes away once the headliner is more secured and doesnt have any play in it. So by putting the foam in there its basically tightening the tolerances of the headliner by pushing down on it making it more secure and moving around less.

I also created "bushings" for all of the grab handles that basically steps the handle away from the headliner enough to stop the noise from happening. I used 1/4" vacuum tubing and cut pieces like 1/2" long and put them over each screw in the handle. I also didnt go nuts screwing them back in. I screwed them back in to where it was tight and the handle wasnt loose, but not as tight as it can go.

Both of these methods have fixed my headliner noise issue nearly 100%. I havent heard it since doing these two things and I recommend anyone with the issue giving these things a try.

I tried this and it worked! 90% of the sunroof rattle/creak is gone. I'm sure if I add more foam it will get rid of 100% of the noise. My car is so quiet now. I can drive the car with the radio off and not hear a thing now.

Yes it is. The IS300 AWD has a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 engine and a 6spd transmission. The RWD version has a crappy 2L turbo and an 8spd transmission.
The version with the 3.5 is an IS350. EDiT. I stand corrected. I did not realize they came out with the IS 300 with the 3.5 AWD. What the hell is that all about?

No idea. It is a detuned version of the exact same engine in the IS350. It makes 260hp instead of 311, and about 40 less foot-pounds of torque. I had it dyno'd and it makes 250hp at the wheels, much more than expected at the wheels....so I think they under-rated it on purpose to really push you into the 350. The torque was where it should be, so sadly, no extra power surprises there.

Man I'm freaking out after going thru all 36 pages here, I just ordered a G70 that is still going to be built (so I could gave in the MB color) and will probably have to wait till October... Have no way of knowing if all this wait will be for a freaking lemon that will have this rattling issue...

I'm seriously considering moving to another brand, trying to get my 1k down back somehow (or just write it off worse case). Is it that bad like u guys say?

The other thing that's been less than impressive so far is the dealer experience, from reading posts here I gather is pretty bad and somehow even worse than having a Hyundai because they might need to wait for Genesis to approve to get work done. Is it that bad?

I loved how the car drove and felt, can only imagine with some small mods how amazing it would be, but having a rattle box would just drive me nuts. I'm so sad this is seems to be such a common issue without a proper TSB/fix.

Yes it is, and that’s what I did. They wouldn’t buy a car back if there was nothing wrong with it. They fought me for months until a dealer just finally gave up trying to fix it, and also ruined the headliner in the process.

I think they would have been fine with a normal sized sunroof. But this “wide” sunroof seems to have been poorly thought out.

Why are you having second thoughts? It’s a hell of a car. This is a very small sampling. The rattle in my car is incredibly minor and will be an easy fix because I know exactly what it is. And it only does it occasionally. The car is more solid than the 2017 BMW 540 I just traded in.

It's true, many new cars can have rattles. Back in 2014 I bought an almost-new BMW 3 series sedan. All the door lock buttons rattled, which drove me crazy. I had to remove the little round lock bezels in the top of the doors and line them with fabric. Unfortunately, lots of other things in the dash, console and doors started to squeak and creak before too long. I traded it in on the G70 with no regrets after two years (despite the occasional headliner noise when it's in the high 80s outside).
(For the record, my wife's CX-5 is quiet and solid as a rock!)

My G70 had a slight noise which was cured with the kludge from Mrcleean. Works plenty well. Just mentioned to my wife yesterday how free from tire, wind, interior noise and rattles the car is. 13k miles

Yeah I had a Mazda 3 for 3.5 years and not a single rattle, same for wifes CX-5. Same for my old Honda. My Q60 has a dash rattle when it's hot but since I have a loud exhaust I dont mind much, also, I dont see a huge thread on their forums complaining about noise.

In any case, I kept looking for alternative cars but the G70 is really the best one. I will just have to wait and hope it doesnt rattle too much.

Good luck, you're likely to be pleased.

Not many of the cars have this issue, it's just a lucky few. It's not the design, mine was replaced and zero issues. The headliner got f**ked up a little, but sunroof replacement was perfect. Probably more like 5% tops? At best? And the car is now in its 4th production year, so most of the kinks are ironed out, even with the refresh (because cosmetic) Car makers make changes to production all the time, constantly evolving the processes to create a more reliable and better-fitting (parts) car. By the time the 4th and 5th years of production roll around, almost all of that shit has been worked out.

My G37 from 2009 had many issues. My 2013 had zero. Most reliable car I ever owned, like 200k without a single incident. Based on the issues with the 2009, you never would have thought that would be possible, but production changes over the course of 5 years cured it of all woes.
