If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi,

I'm new here as I just recently purchased a 2018 Genesis G80 Sport in March this year. It's been a fantastic car, however just the past couple of weeks as it started getting a bit colder I noticed the oil pressure/level light start turning on and off throughout my drive. It seems like it mostly goes away when it it's warm out, it'll only come on every now and then when I'm at a stop. On colder days it seems to be on most of the time except when I'm accelerating. The car seems to run fine, but could be masked by all of the sound dampening. Is this possible it's just a sensor or have others seen this indicate something much worse? I'm a 2nd owner right under 65,000 miles, so the powertrain warranty that would've carried over just expired. I'm nervous that I could be seeing a big bill if it isn't just a sensor. Anyone else have an experience like this?

I did check the oil when I first saw the light and it was between the F and L marks, which usually indicate it should be fine, but I went ahead and topped it off with about half a quart of oil (last oil change was about 3,000 miles ago). This made the light go away mostly on warmer (70 degrees +) days, but today (around 45-50) it was on most of my drive except when I was actively accelerating.

I'd certainly get it checked very soon. Hopefully it is a sensor but if not, the longer you drive it, the potential for an even LARGER repair. This is not normal.

AFAIK, that light is the same as most other cars, it is an oil pressure only light, and there is no oil level sensor. The cars that I know of that do have oil level sensors, use a different indicator or use a different color for the same indicator (example: some BMWs, yellow = low oil level, red = low oil pressure).

Either you need a new oil pressure sensor (pretty rare) or a new engine.

Came across a video on YouTube that describes the issues you're having with the Oil Pressure Sensor light: coming on/off intermittently depending on outside temperature. Seems like a lot of DH/G80 owners in Korea have had the OPS replaced right around the 100K km / 62K miles mark, according to some of the comments posted on this video.

The video is in Korean but take a look.

That makes everything clear!

After watching that video, I'd like to hear Hyundai's explanation as to why they decided to put the sensor at that spot, considering if it fails during warranty, the amount of work to replace it.

Hi,
I've 2016 Genesis 3.8l started doing the same exact thing (oil pressure light come On and Off). It comes On mainly in the morning and it turns Off when accelerating). I have 59,450 Miles on it, so that tells me that this sensor has some kind of defect causing it to fail after or around 60K miles. I believe Hyundai should cover this under warranty because it does show a sequence of a pattern when it fails.

I have a 2016 genesis also that oil light comes on and off it started right after 60,000 miles and car stall when I start to accelerate sometimes

I HAVE A 2017 G80 60,700 MILES. MINE JUST STARTED TODAY! THIS IS BULL #!###$@$
Why is is Bull S###? There is a reason for it, usually low oil pressure. Could be a pump going bad. Could be low oil level. Worn bearings. Bad sensor.

I had a Ford that did that years ago and drove it for 3 years but that does not mean you can or should. I'd put a real gauge on it and see what is happening. .

I just had this happen as the weather changed. Oil level is good: oil is clean. It’s moving around the motor as it should. The light used to only come on after the car warmed up and had a low idle. Now it’s on after a couple minutes and stays on under 2k rpm if I’m not accelerating.

This appears to be ...
1) Malfunctioning oil pressure sensor. But, if this was an electrical/sensor problem I'd expect the warning across all RPMs.
or
2) Oil pump is malfunctioning/going bad. You reported the issue occurs at <2KRPM, which is symptomatic of pump going bad.
It is also possible there is a blockage in the oil line after the oil pump and before sensor (analogous to a blocked artery). At low RMP/low oil pressure it throws the error light. At high pressure/RPM enough oil is passing through blockage to keep oil pressure within specifications.

Most oil pumps on cars are mechanical and run off the engine (crankshaft). Oil pump operates relative to speed of engine. Slower RPM, the slower the pump operates.

I'd check the sensor and/or oil pump. I checked my OBD scanner and unfortunately it does not show oil pressure. I've always preferred gauges versus idiot lights for key systems. My G80 has a temperature gauge but only a warning/idiot light for oil pressure.

If you don't have the auto mechanic skills to test yourself I'd take to a mechanic. Oil is the lifeblood of an engine. If oil pump goes, best case scenario is you break down on the side of the road. Worst case you blow up the engine.

Hopefully it's just a malfunctioning sensor versus a bad oil pump.

Same thing is happening to my car. My car now has 170,000+ miles and it started doing it around 130,000. Took my car to a shop in San Antonio to get it diagnosed as soon as it started happening and yes, it’s a faulty oil pressure sensor and NOT a bad oil pump. At least in my case, it’s not something to be too concerned about, but I will get it taken care of.

I watched the video. That's ludicrous/major surgery to just replace an oil pressure sensor. In the good ole days a cars OPS was screwed into the oil filter mount or engine block and a 10 minute job to replace. That's progress ;)

Wholly crap batman. To bury the pressure sensor between cylinder banks and under the intake manifold is crazy. My back could not stand being bent over doing that much work or having to sit in the engine bay like the Korean mechanic did. I too remember the days you could open the hood and actually see the pressure sensor hanging off the engine block. Working on cars was a pleasure back in those days.
