  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This question is about the media that can be hooked up to the USB dongle inside the armrest.

At first I was excited about hooking up a small USB powered hard drive. However after reading the owners manual, it states to not do that b/c a hard drive draws too much power from the USB. So..... I'm currently using 2-32 GIG for music. I know that seems like allot but im on the road allot.

Anybody have any input regarding the usb powered devices or some of the solid state hard drives?

What do you folks use?

I also read somewhere(probably from the manual) that it's not a good idea to hook up a hard drive.
I wonder if there's a portable hard drive that uses external DC power and not from the USB directly. If there's one, which is very likely, my guess is it'll be okay to run that with the DIS USB.

I'm currently using a 16 gig thumb drive.

I spent a couple weeks in FRYES and online researching options. after a purchase of an iomega terrabyte HD- power inverter - i decided that the thumbs were a cleaner decision. i tried to find a dc cigar lighter power adapter and no such luck, I would have to modify it and hope that the system didnt spike and fry the drive. i am thinking about one of the solid state drives but man! they are pricy

I agree that the thumb drives are more neat. I wish the DIS came with an internal HDD like the Acura's ELS system.

I think I prefer the flash drives. A 32 GB flash drive costs about $65, and it will store a lot of music. If you really need more space than that, you can buy a 128 GB drive, or you can keep as many drives in the car as you want and switch them.

It's mighty easy to pull a flash drive out of the car, plug it into your computer, and load it up with music. If you're traveling and have a computer, you can rip a CD or download music and transfer it to the drive as often as you want.

Good point, and I think I might agree with you.

But who's to say that the two options are mutually exclusive?

Personally, I think an internal HDD and USB slot would be great... but that might just be me. There are times when each format has it's advantages.

Totally agree.

When I first purchased my car, I tried my portable WD120 gig hard drive.
I worked but took time to have it recognized.
I then purchased a 16g thumb drive and that also worked.
I now have a 3gen I-Pod and leave it connected.
It plays what I like when I like so the XM is gone in May.

after you got your drive formatted at fat32 did you notice any speed difference between the thumb(jump) and the HD?
