  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Driving a Dodge Charger rental while my car is getting repaired, my observations so far compared to the G70.

Hello, you can refer to my other post about the recent accident that I had with my '22 G70 if you are interested.

I've been driving a '21 Dodge Charger for me rental for 3 days now, I will say first of all that the Charger had always been a car I've wanted to drive forever but never got the chance to, I just love the way it looks and was so interested in testing how it drives and handles.

The one that I got was a base Charger, so I know I shouldn't be really judging the performance of the vehicle based on that, but I will say that I was so disappointed with the lack of power/acceleration, I always assumed that the Charger was a beast but honestly with my experience so far it accelerates a bit faster than a regular sedan car. Which made me REALLY appreciate my G70, I mean holy cow what a huge difference it was, my G70 is so damn aggressive and powerful when I hit the gas, I guess I don't have to say no more since you guys know what I'm talking about lol

Anyway, just a few things that I have noticed when driving the Charger, I feel like the drive is more smooth in the Charger, especially when I compare the braking, I was really enjoying the smooth and consistent slow down and coming to a stop, something that my G70 struggles with due to the harsh transmission braking, it was so nice to have full control over the slow down without having any of those annoying mini stops when the gear is shifting down.

I really liked that the steering wheel had up/down buttons on the BACK of it on each side, and between the up and down buttons there was a button that is used to select/enter, I found that better than having those buttons on the front and preferred to have actual buttons for control rather than the wheels.

The screen in front of the driver had really good detailed options to display coolant temp, oil temp, oil pressure, transmission temp in numbers, AND oil life indicator, I thought that was really cool and wished the G70 had those.

The screen in the center was alright I thought, nothing too fancy, but one thing that I liked was the simplicity, it had the main menu options always displayed at the bottom (radio, climate, settings etc), which made transitioning between menus really easy with one click, this is something that i thought the G70 lacked a bit, many times I found myself needed a "home" button to go back to the main menu while I was in the map screen, I know there was a home button there but it would auto hide and you have to click on a menu to display it, I prefer the consistency of what I saw in the Charger. But I understand the G70 has way more options to display so it's not as simple to do the same.

Other than that, the G70 definitely had WAY more options and customizations, the vehicle I was driving didn't have any smart cruise control or lane assist (maybe those are options in higher trims), but honestly after driving that car it surely didn't impress me at all, technology wise or driving wise, it certainly didn't seem like I was driving a modern 2021 car, more like a 2015 one.

Those were just my observations, if anyone had an experience driving one of the more powerful sporty models, let me know what you think about it compared to the G70 !

I just looked at the Dodge website to see what engine it has. They list is as a 3.6 liter engine but give no HP or torque specs. Maybe they would be embarrassed to show them.

In terms of speed, the G70 is in between an R/T and a 392.

The car felt old because it is old. It's been the same platform since MY11. The cars are designed for 2 completely different things and 2 completely different audiences.

I'm not sure what price point your G70 is, but play around building one on the Dodge website that is similar in price, then go drive that if you can find one. Would be a more sensible comparison I think. Glad to hear you love your car tho. That's the most important.

I've owned both a Charger R/T (5.7 Hemi V8 370HP) and an SRT 392 Charger (6.4 Hemi V8 485HP) - and now own a 3.3T G70. Compared to the Chargers I've owned - my G70 is definitly faster than my old R/T and definitely slower than the SRT 392. The 392 Hemi is a beast and an absoulutley awesome powerplant. Other than that, I like everything better about my G70 - especially the handling.

Thanks for the insight !

I realize this may be splitting hairs, but the '21 is rated at 292.
For reference, I raced a V6 charger while I was in my bone stock Elantra GT Sport 6sp manual. From 0 to about 80, you would have though we were bolted together. It's kinda crazy to think a 1.6L "station wagon" had the exact same acceleration as a V6 "sports car". Pretty sad

Who the hell claims a V6 Dodge Charger is a sports car?

Dodge, Some dictionaries, and most insurance companies.

And, "Sports car" is somewhat subjective, that's why it's in quotes.

It's not crazy or sad. The Charger also has much more weight to move than your GT. Power to weight is the oldest principle in racing.

Even though they have the build quality and interior of a Fisher Price toy, I'll hand it to Chrysler and Dodge for still making relatively affordable full-size V8 RWD sedans in 2021.
I'm sad to say my wife loves the 300C. I rented one a few years back in Buffalo, and at that time I found the entertainment system pretty easy to use considering it was my first and last time driving one.

100%. The only thing that really compares to it in terms of size, V8 power and RWD would be something like a BMW 550i (compares to a 392 Charger) or an M5 (compares to a Hellcat Charger) - but they're twice the price (or more).

I test drove a 2020 Challenger 392 scat pack with the wide body kit before getting the G70 2 years ago. It drove like crap as if all the wheels were not balanced and wasn't a fan on the interior. I think they look cool on the outside but after that test dive I'd never own one.

Nice Widebody! Here's my old 2018 SRT 392. I definitely miss it at times - but love my G70 just as much!
