  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Connected Services going away in December 2022

Yes, they should have been. Putting technology into a car that has a known expiration date is wrong - especially when there is newer technology to replace it - readily available.

I had planned to renew my auto-start functionality after my services expired, and this rubs me wrong.

Interesting, especially since our cars are identical except for the year. Do you have Connected Services active? If not, maybe the choice is not shown.

My map version is the latest, I updated it yesterday. But Connected Services was there before I updated it. My free three years expires this November.

Below is what I see when I press the Setup button. You can see Connected Services on the bottom right.

Yes, I have connected Services and it works.

Works.... Today, but come December,,, the off switch will be thrown. For all us 3G grandpas.
P.S. 'Wonder if Verizon can be held responsible for endangering the lives of all us who rely on that 3G signal in our pre ~2020 Genesis. Hey!! Verizon! You'll never get the Vail Medal! (A Ma Bell reference from this Ma Bell Wire Whipper - Cable Splicer, Pacific NW Bell)

Leaving, thinking of a scolding for Genesis. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

I agree! I. Am. Pissed!
I'd agree is we really got something. My last "settlement check" is sitting uncashed for the entire 25 cents I got. The few I've been involved in never amounted more than $5 or so, but the lawyers did well.

So, after sending me the email saying my 2019 Genesis Ultimate will no longer be able to have any of the connected services features after 12/2022, Genesis decided to add insult to injury by sending me an email telling me about all the connected services features. The first page is attached. And this is supposed to be a luxury brand? I'll be dumping my Genesis and shopping elsewhere.

My older BMW lost is connected services years ago. No SOS or maintenance updates. No more navigation updates either. I don't look at it as a knock on BMW. Technology changes.
I'm not happy about the Genesis Connected Services that I'm losing, but these are ancillary services that I'm paying extra for. They aren't the reason I bought the car. Losing them wont be the reason I sell the car.

I don't care about map updates because I use WAZE and Google Maps with Apple CarPlay. But I did want the automated crash response, stolen vehicle assistance, the ability to start the car and get heat or A/C started from within a building, and some of the other features that service offered. My 2019 G80 Ultimate which I bought on January 2, 2019, had a 3G modem. Had I bought the same model car manufactured in 2020, it would have a 4G modem. That tells me they knew the problem this would create and just didn't give a damn. When I buy a car, I count on it to have viable technology that will last longer than 3 years. So, Genesis will not be on my list in the future.

Does that mean they new about the problem and fixed it in 2020? How do you know how much lead time they needed to have it fixed in 2019?
I’m not happy either but I would rather argue for a solution now than try a figure out how far back they could have fixed it.

Except for the crash response, I'll be getting pretty much all the other features with with an aftermarket remote starter. If you bought the car new and wont get your full 3 years of included connected services, I think you have legitimate beef.
But these services were extras in my eyes. That's why they are subscription services and not baked into the purchase price.
Good luck trying to future proof your technology though.

Everyone knew not new that 3G was going away for years. OnStar started preparing their vehicles in 2016. Genesis put a 3G modem in my 2019 G80 and a 4G in 2019 G80's made later. So yes, they knew and they fixed it for some but not all.

Well my 2018 GMC Sierra with OnStar was future proofed for this.

...for this.
The older escalade I traded in for my Genesis couldn't even Bluetooth stream music, mirror my phone, etc. My (even older)Buick and Pontiacs with onstar were just as bad or worse.

I think the way of the future will be to rely on our phones to power all the connectivity in our cars. It'll be cheaper and easier to update.

One of the products that I am involved with uses cellular for data for transactions. These are installed in remote locations. We started the design in 2013 and put in LTE capable modems then, even though we used 3G service at the time. We (as did everyone) already knew that 3G would be going away, we just didn't know exactly when.

4G technology was known in 2010. Given the normal lag for car design finals to production, it would probably not show up before 2015MY at best. Some of the blame also goes to the manufacturer of the head units. They too should have looked at what is the latest available. Hyundai/Genesis should be on top of it too.

Not my area of expertise so I have no idea if a simple add-on or module change can fix it. There would be some value on both ends; we get to keep the services and they get to keep the income we pay for them. They have to be taking a financial hit too.

Anyone get the email this morning saying Genesis Connected Services is being discontinued this December due to Verizon dropping 3g network coverage? Guess I'll start exploring remote start options. I will miss the monthly vehicle reports though.
Yes, I did and this is BS. Genesis should replace the in car modules to 4G o 5G. If this goes thru without a fix from Genesis, your vehicle will become less safe, less convenient and lose significant value. With the safety features gone, I am sure your insurance company will raise your rates significantly. We should not pay for the Auto Co. shortsightedness and desire to cut corners. (3G technology was much cheaper the 4 or 5G). Do I hear Class-Action suit in the wind?

The only "safety feature" we will lose is the automated call if the car crashes. The insurance companies don't care at all about that. They don't even check to see if you have the service enabled (paid subscription after three years). Also, please don't count on that feature anyway. There aren't very many crashes that are severe enough to need it, yet light enough that the battery isn't disconnected. (The call won't work if the wreck is bad enough to short out or open the electrical connections from the battery all the way in the trunk to the unit in the dash.)

This is poor planning on Genesis's part, but there's no need to exaggerate the problem. It's hard to take you seriously when you do.

You lose the alert but what other safety systems will cost for insurance? They don't care if you have remote start. I'm not expecting a rate increase.

Same discussion happening here as well
