Genesis G80 Most Reported Problems Log

2021 G80 2.5T AWD prestige check engine light came on 1 hour after purchasing. Took to dealer and said everything was fine. That same day drove it 3 min and light came back. Says Engine control system is the issue. Going back to dealer on Wednesday. They've been great for valet. Car has 6k miles on it.

One year update - have had the (first year new model) 2021 G80 2.5T Prestige for about 1 year, 10,000 miles.
NO PROBLEMS. I.E., 100% PROBLEM FREE

Favorite features:
  • all the safety technology
  • incredibly smooth powertrain
  • 30 mpg highway (pretty damn good for a big AWD sedan with 300 HP)
  • 21 speaker Lexicon audio system. Sounds better than my home Polk Audio Speakers / Onkyo receiver 5.1 surround sound system.
Only dislike - driver's seat bottom could be more comfortable. IMHO caused by poor bladders (for adjustable firmness) design.

Bought my 2021 G80 3.5 Prestige in July last year and have just shy of 5k on it now. I work from home so it doesn't get much action and a trip to St. Louis from Nashville has been the bulk of the miles really. With as little as it is driven, I'm surprised I haven't seen some of the battery issues others have noted, though it will not auto stop/start the engine till I've driven for 45+ minutes straight. The only real issue I've had is the head/navigation unit freezing and restarting randomly. The first time was in Bellville, IL on I64 and it happened twice along the same stretch so I chalked it up to the extremely poor lane markings that I could barely see. After that, it was a while before it happened again, and again, poor lane markings so I didn't think much of it. The last time it happened 2 times on the same drive in an area with very good markings so I took it to the dealer within an hour of it happening. They checked for codes and found some errors indicating a bad head unit, that was in November. The replacement head unit arrived last month and the car is at the dealer right now to have it replaced. Genesis concierge came and picked up the car, they didn't have a loaner at the time, but I didn't need it since I work from home, they will have it back to me tomorrow. While it hasn't happened again since then and I also updated the nav system that some said fixed the issue, I've had some other weirdness with the head unit that will hopefully be fixed.

Overall, I've had a great experience with my 2015 Genesis and the new one. I've had one issue with the dealership and the service advisor didn't last 3 days total before they fired him. Other than that, I've had all good experiences there in the 5+ years I've been using them. Even when my 2015 was totaled and I was in a crunch, I was able to get the new one for $69k OTD when they were going for 5k-10k over MSRP at the same store.

Mine did the same I got error message lane departure not available then head unit would restart then all was good - I sold the car so no more issue - amazing vehicle just didn't like the transmission

BIG problem... We had lots of snow here on Long Island. Used my gentle snow brush to clear the car starting from the front and moving to the back. When I got to the back, the darn trunk opened because I had the key fob in my pocket and left a load of snow in my trunk. 2021 G80 AWD 3.5T Prestige

How do I disable the trunk from opening if I somehow hang out behind or near the trunk?

How do I disable the trunk from opening if I somehow hang out behind or near the trunk?
You could unlock the car. It won't function if the car is unlocked.
Otherwise, disable smart trunk from the settings menu. (See your owner's manual for more detail if needed.)
Didn't you have several seconds of beeping to be able to move away before the trunk opened?

I wounlock the car to avoid the side mirrors and trunk action.

Yes, unlock the car before spending time nearby with the fob to avoid opening side mirrors and trunk.

Thank you for the great advice. It may have beeped but we had about two feet of snow on the car and ground, I had a heavy coat with hood on so there is a good chance I did not hear the beeping.

Do note that if you unlock it, you need to open and close a door, or it will relock itself after several seconds.

Just picked up a 21 G80 3.5T AWD Prestige. Forest green/black on ivory. Solid vehicle compared to 3 years of service problems with my 018 G90 Ultimate 5.0. Loved the 8 cylinder but don't miss it with the twin turbo 3.5 6. Still driving my 016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 that's been terrific. I absolutely hate the idle stop as it feels like the car is going to stall when it restarts. Anyone know how to permanently disable it instead of pushing a button every time I drive?

You need to add a circuit to mimick pushing the button on vehicle start. I do this for the heated/coolded seats. I also automatically raise the rear sunshade when I shut the car off and lower it when I start the car.

I have had my G80 3.5T AWD Prestige for going on a year now (drove it home on 3/29/21) and I asked the salesman if I had to press the button to stop the auto stop/start and he told me yes. So, every time I got into the car, I pushed the button and drove away happily without a stop/start. No matter how much I push or cancel the button, the car would not stop/start. I occasionally get the orange A in a circle on the display but it seems to make no difference. I recently read somewhere that if I drive over 45 miles somewhere, the feature will be reactivated (can't remember where I read it - it could have been on this forum?). I take almost all short trips (<20 miles) so this has not been an issue for me.

What has been an issue for me is an average of 15.7 MPG! I do not have a heavy foot but occasionally, I have to punch it out to get into traffic or merge on a highway.

My next service is due next month and I have documented all my gas fill-ups and gas mileage on an excel spreadsheet to show the service manager. I suspect something is wrong.

It shouldn't matter how far you drive, the IGS will not reactivate on its own until you stop and restart the car.
Stop pressing that button and maybe your mileage will go up to 15.8 MPG instead.

Thanks for educating me! I smell 15.9 MPG...

I really like my 3.5L prestige EXCEPT for the noisy, creaking panoramic sunroof. Dealer wants to tear the car apart and replace it, but I have no confidence in their ability to do that without significant damage to paint and trim. I’ll probably get rid of an otherwise very nice car.

PERMANENT, FREE SOLUTION: Permanently Disable Auto Start / Stop
see my post #25 in that thread.
4+ months since I implemented this solution, no problems, I have almost forgotten that my car has that crappy feature!

5000 miles on my G80 3.5L Prestige. Trans is perfect. No problems except for a noisy sunroof.

Had my '21 3.5 Prestige for about a year now, and except for some major problems initially (replaced transmission and sunroof), I'm very happy with the car. However, there are some electrical quirks that aren't serious, but I wonder if anyone else has experienced. Sometimes, when I stop for gas, the gas door won't open. I have to push the unlock button on the key fob to release it. Sometimes the audio system will come on as soon as I start the car, and sometimes there will be a delay of 10 -20 seconds, like it's going through some startup cycle or something. The passenger seat has an exit feature that moves back when you open the door, then moves up when you close it. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn't. I leave the HVAC system on Auto, but occasionally, I'll start the car, and it's off. To me, none of these are major issues, but I do plan to mention them the next time the car goes in for service. Anyone else having similar experiences?

I will be keeping a record (unofficially) of what problems 2021 Genesis 3.5T AWD Prestige owners have.

Your input is important because there are so few of us!

Thanks for your time,

Lou

New to the forum, I have a 2021 G80, 3.5T, AWD Prestige with just under 20K miles.
Current issues:
1) Under hard acceleration the power will surge sometimes, it feels like the boost is not staying constant causing the power to surge.
2) I’m having some issue with the programing of the transmission. After about 12,000 miles when slowing down to come to a stop the transmission would shift down too early causing annoying engine braking. This was in comfort and eco mode, it almost seems like the shift pattern when slowing is what you would see in sport mode. I brought it in to the dealer, they said they haven’t heard of this issue but reset the ECU. After the reset the transmission worked pretty well for a couple more months then in one day it went back to the poor shift strategy. I recently had them reset it again and it’s working OK now but I’m sure it’s going to go change back again.
3) I have an intermittent issue with people hearing me when the iPhone is connected through the car. This is both with the cord and Bluetooth. I’ve isolated it to the car with disconnecting the cord and Bluetooth when on a bad call and every time disconnecting the phone from the car I can be heard again. Dealer looked at it and made mention of known issues with the mics but since they could recreate the issue no repair was made.

I have been pretty happy with the car but these issues are starting to drive me nuts. The dealer has looked at these items multiple times and they tell me they have never heard of the issues and they can’t recreate so they don’t do any repairs. I have a hard time believing I’m the only one having these problems.

Thanks,
GRD
