50000 Mile UPDATE

Hello all,

Crossing 50,000 miles

*I have 10k,20k, and 40k updates where I wax poetic about the Genesis, so I'll keep this one brief*

- No squeaks, rattles, problems whatsoever
- Oil change every 7500 miles (Mobil 1 0W-30 Synthetic - excellent stuff that reduces the startup lifter noise that is common on cold mornings)
- Cabin filter replaced at 30000 miles. Fairly easy to change.
- Wiper blades changed at 40000 miles. Easy as pie to change.
- Air Filter changed at 40000 miles. Easy as pie to change.
- Tires replaced at 40000 with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. Excellent tires with more grip that the stock Dunlops with a VERY slight improvement in the already excellent ride quality. Very pricey though and it seemed like they took a while to 'break-in' as they were initially very stiff.
- Paint is in Excellent shape
- Leather seats and interior panels look brand new. No severe cracking on the bolsters of the leather seats. I condition them every so often with Lexol Conditioner after using Lexol cleaner to clean them.
- Rides Beautifully...only turns a little 'crusty' over rough surfaces. The most important thing in this regard - TIRE PRESSURES. I've had good luck setting the rears 1 psi lower than the fronts, but DISCLAIMER: Follow Manufacturer Recommended Pressures

- Very misleading info from Owner's manual vs. Dealership vs. the 'Quick Start' Genesis guide....for example owner's manual states 'Fuel Filter' and 'Fuel Air Filter' should be replaced at 37.5k miles. This is not accurate - these do not ever need to be replaced. Another confusion I ran into was the tranny fluid - dealership said it needs to be replaced at 60k but I read somewhere else that the fluid was 'lifetime' which is typical of modern auto trannys.

An Absolutely BRILLIANT car. Absolutely stunning. I'm an automotive engineer and this car is a marvel. I own/owned Audi, BMW, Acura and have extensively driven Lexus, Infiniti, Saab (over 3000 miles in each at least). A truly outstanding job well done. Much like 911 owners who swear by nothing but 911s, I'm an 'Genesis' man for life. Check out that laser welded roof, the foam insulation in the door hinge area, the triple door seals, stiffer structure than a 5 series or E class, more interior room than a LS460, headlight cluster detailing, tighter panel gaps that a S class, LS460 and 7 series........absolutely Brilliant Stuff.

Three things you mentioned.

1. "Cabin filter replaced at 30,000 miles". "Fairly easy to change". Well I'm glad you can remove the two gizmos in your glove box to drop the glove box down, in order to change the cabin filter. Although I once watched my Genesis Technician remove them, and he had a hard time removing them, I tried removing those two clips and they would not budge. Even tried using a pliers and still could not remove them. Oh well, the cabin filter stays in for a while longer.

2. "Tranny Fluid - dealer says it needs to be replaced at 60,000 miles." Your dealer wants to make some money on this. Don't know how much the fluid for the Aisin transmission (V6) costs, but the fluid for the ZF transmission (V8) costs about $75 (CRAZY) a quart from a dealer and even though the same fluid from ZF, or Pentosin, or even Jaguar Dealers, or fluid from Castrol Import Trans Fluid, which meets the 1375.4 spec, Hyundai will not allow their dealers to use anything other than the Hyundai (ZF) Fluid, at $75 a quart. Just for the heck of it, check with that dealer to see how much he will charge for the fluid replacement. Let us know.

3. "Tires replaced at 40000 miles". You must drive like me. Mine are still great at 23,000 miles and they look like they will last to 40,000 miles. I just don't understand how guys are wearing their tires out so soon.

This is worth more than any professional review on-line or in a mag. Thanks for a down to earth real life evaluation coming from someone who actually has driven the other best of best and has lived with the Genny for 50,000 miles.

Which model do you have, the V6 or the V8?

Great review and thanks! I have two slight creaks/squeaks, one is coming from around the headliner area near the dome lamp and one is coming from the dash somewhere lower, in that same area. Quiet as a church mouse otherwise.

Why couldn't more posts be as informative and to the point as this one? I'm also impressed that with so many complaints and issues found with the Genesis on this forum, this guy has a good one! Not one mention of any audio failures, steering wheel memory issues, or any electrical problems whatsoever. I am also reassured that Hyundai must be making quality cars that customers are happy with.

I have 53,000 miles on my Genny and I have 0 complaints about the car. The amp was replaced for the sound system and new tires at 39,000 miles. Still very quiet ride, great for the long commute I make daily.

One of the "nice little things" that make the Genesis stand out is the thickness of the sunroof headliner that helps make the Genesis quiet. It's so well made that my neighbor who has the 2008 Lincoln MRX her headliner is so flimsy that when I closed it I also most damaged it because of no resistance compared to the headliner in the Genesis.

I'm still loving my Genesis after approx. 2 years (took delivery 6/26). It's not perfect, but neither were my BMW, Lexus, Cadillac, Acura or Land Rover. My biggest regret has nothing to do with the car or Hyundai, but rather my color choice and decision not to wait 2-3 months for the Tech Package to become available. Hyundai really hit this one out of the park in most respects IMO. To this day I can't think of another $35k car that feels as well-built or is as handsomely styled as my Genesis.

Good point, life is relative. No one has come close to building a large RWD affordable car. Everything else is either smaller, much more expensive or front wheel drive.

Pontiac G8 came pretty close w/ sportier engine/suspension setup, but was smaller in the inside and nowhere as close as far as luxury.

Mechanically they are fine, but it's the little details like fading trim, or radio buttons that start to show wear in a car that is not that old, that turns me off.

I used to think the same about domestic cars until I started to work for a supplier.
My job involves lots of work inside the car, and seeing the newer vehicles, both production and prototype, firsthand changed my perception of domestic products.
I agree that big 3 have still work to do to catch up with imports, but the gap is closing fast.
IMO, Ford is doing the best among big 3, GM is okay, and Chrysler needs a lot of work.
It's mostly interior design/quality that needs to improve the most.
As a car enthusiast, I hope to see better products from the big 3.
