17" Wheel Caps

I am replacing the original wheel caps with Genesis emblem caps. Have not yet tried to remove the originals. Is there a trick to doing this?

No trick, but the the wheels should first be removed. Then the old ones can be removed easily by pushing them out from the inside or tapping them with something like a screwdriver handle. A good time to do it is when the wheels are rotated.

You don't have to remove the wheels to remove the plastic center caps. If so, how would you remove the wheels since the lug nuts are under the caps?

You pry the cap off by placing the tool that came with the car (its in the trunk above the spare and has a flatted end, like a screwdriver) in the notch in the wheel. If you look at the outer edge of the cap you will see the notch in the alloy wheel. Be careful not to just take a screwdriver to it, that can mar up the rim and plastic center cap.

When placing the cap back on be sure to align the tab (inside the cap) with the narrow notch on the wheel. You need to make sure the tab is sitting in the notch when you push it on. If not, you will bend the notch and put stress on the cap...increasing the risk that it might come off.

The 17" wheel caps don't cover the lug nuts and there is no slot in them.

A jewelers screw driver. No marks.

To avoid scratching caps and/or wheels, it's preferable to remove the wheels (from car) and push each cap out from the back. Of course, it's a lot work.

Thanks for the response. I didn't get a little bag of tools- just the jack, etc., set into the circular holder on top of the spare. But, will ask the dealer.

I tried to get it out with a jewelers screwdriver but the metal just scratches the plastic and the rim. I got it to come out about 1/4 inch and it would not "pop" out the entire way and out of fear of scratching the thing anymore I quit trying.

Are you sure it was the 17" wheels with the little emblem on the interior of the lugnuts, not the 18" one that covers the nuts and comes off easily with a screwdriver?

I wanted to get the changes made without waiting to do a rotation, but not at the cost of scratching the rims.

mine popped right off using a small screwdriver. There is no notch on these 2012 Genesis 3.8
