  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Connected Services going away in December 2022

Please be aware that the loss of 3G service has no affect at all on the operation of the in-car navigation. I don't know why so many people seem to think that it does. (Other than you won't be able to send destinations electronically, and the voice button on the mirror will not work.)
Because at least on the G90 (no touch screen) it is a real pain to enter a destination. And you can do anything while the car is in motion.

Doesn't it call up Genesis (Hyundai) each time it comes back with results? I thought it did. Figured it was calling Connected Services.

BTW, Genesis CS called me yesterday regarding my issue. I asked why they told me my car wasn't affected, but now it is. I didn't get the email, either. She didn't know.

I asked which cars were affected. The lady said all 2019 and earlier G80's and all 2017 G90's. I asked why my modem status screen shows "4G". She didn't know that either.

Next I asked why Genesis used old cellular units in a 2019 car when they knew it was going to expire. She said "well, I don't know". I said "of course not". I told them it was irresponsible planning, and ended the call.

It wouldn't surprise me if my car's Connected Services work after 12/2022. They really may not know for sure, and are just covering their ass. Too bad it expires in 11/2022, guess I'll never know.

It can, but it doesn't have to. I haven't paid for that part of the service in over a year. Also, I went without any services for a few months. There was no detectable difference to how the built-in navigation worked.

Does it include traffic information?

I think I saw it today, I set a destination and it said contacting Connected Services, and then it failed (bad signal I guess). I cleared the error and it started navigating but I didn't see any options, it just selected one route. Normally it will offer a couple of routes based on tolls or traffic.

I canceled that and try it again, this time it worked.

Yesterday I created a ticket with Genesis asking them when the website that allows us to check our VIN will be fixed. They replied saying the website was up and running. I replied back asking if they can check a VIN? It still does not work for me.

Here's a VIN I found that you can test with.

KMTGC4SD9MU047329

No it’s not up. No change. Even if you put in a bad vin it does not even error out.
if you get someone on the phone, ask them to try it out.
Maybe they are referring to a different webpage?

AFAIK, traffic info comes from Sirius XM and/or FM HD radio. It does not come from the 3G connected services, although the pre-route planning probably uses traffic data from some other source.

I believe that you are correct. At least in 2017 to 2019 models traffic comes only from Sirius XM. No connected services is required. Preroute planning does not use traffic at all in these models.

Okay, so Genesis has flopped again. My car won't be affected by the 3G issue.

Also, they are apparently using the Hyundai link to test VINs - the one Mcc posted. Several typos.

Did you get the email offering $1,000 off a new Genesis because of being affected by connected services going away?
If you didn't, you likely aren't affected.

My 2018 G80 base is also now saying NOT effected by the 3G sunset.

My subscription runs past the sunset date so we shall see what happens.

This has been quite the saga, and as mentioned we probably haven't heard the end of it.

No, at least I don't recall getting it. If it looked like one of their regular sales emails, I probably deleted it. But I don't think I did. Nor did I get the original email.

I added an aftermarket remote start to my 2018 G80 Sport, and I should've done it earlier

I was annoyed to learn that my 2018 G80 Sport uses a 3G cellular data connection that will soon be unavailable in the US, as a I rely on the cellular remote start extensively in both the summer and winter. When my paid subscription to hyundai blue link expired in June I got an aftermarket replacement installed and so far it's better in most (but not all) ways. Here's a list comparing strong points of the factory system and the Compustar Firstech DC3-LC Remote Start Module with the Drone X1 Max cellular module that I got. I have no affiliation with any company involved here.

Things that seem to be better in the new system:

  • 25 minutes run time (vs the factory's 10) is more wasteful but I always did two 10s when it's below zero out anyway.
  • Location reporting anywhere vs. factory's 1 mile range: Why did Hyundai think I only wanted to know where my car was if it was close to it?!
  • Better app (for Android): uses standard controls, notifications, allows pasting and password input, etc.
  • Does not automatically stop listening for remote commands after 3 days: Genesis buried this in the fine print initially, but if you don't start your car locally or remotely for three or four days it stops listening for remote commands to preserve the battery by powering down the cellular receiver, which brings us to:
  • Notification on low battery: Letting me know that now would be a good time to start my car (if it's safe) is nice. The app displays battery voltage too, but as long as I'm getting a notification I don't need to look.
  • Notification on alarm and towing/tilt/impact: I'd much rather know something is happening to my car that's out of earshot than to just have it annoy the neighbors with a siren.
  • More subtle flasher: my installer hooked it up to an infrequent flash of the parking lights instead of the factory's steady flash of a lot more lights.
  • OBD codes are displayed on the phone app, so you've got a diagnostic scanner too.
  • Bread crumbs: At higher subscription levels you get "breadcrumbs" on a map showing where you've been recently. It's not for me, but nice if you've got kids you can't trust I guess.
  • Interior temp is displayed in the app. By the time pull this up I'll just remote start anyway, but it's nice to know if I'm walking toward an oven and should wait another ten minutes.
  • Slightly faster: 3ish second response to remote commands instead of 15ish seconds for factory.
Things that seem to be better in the original system:

  • Control of front defrost: It always bothered me the factory system could turn on the front defrost, but not the rear defrost, but the new one can do neither. I'll just have to run it longer and let the heat do its thing.
  • Set climate control: The factory system could set the climate to any preset, whereas the new one just leaves it where it was - which is mostly fine too but not as much control.
  • No 40s handoff timer: This one's hard to explain but the new system requires I open car, close the car, and put a foot on the brake within 40 seconds of having started that sequence or the car shuts down. If I walk up, open the trunk, put some stuff in it, and then walk to the door it's already shut down. It's not a big hassle -- I just restart the car locally, but it's not as seamless as the factory handoff.
Things that seem to be the same with both systems:

  • Geo fencing, Speed alerts, Curfew: These are all extra features I don't use, but they both seem to be there but cost extra with the new system.
  • Vehicle Health Status: The maintenance info seems valueless in both systems. The genesis system knows my mileage from the odometer and the other deduces it by GPS, but neither syncs with the car's "maintenance minder" which is what the dealer resets on service.
  • Price: $6.99/month vs. $19.80/mo and even cheaper at the year, 3 year, and 5 year plans. For the device and install I paid $749.31, which at the 3-year-plan ($3.99/mo) I bought, breaks even at 47 months. The items can be bought cheaper off Amazon and self-installed, or a better retail installation deal found, but I wasn't particularly price conscious on this one. If I had switched as soon as the initial 1-year free service had run out I'd be saving money by now.
Aside: I never minded that the factory remote was app-only with no remote start on the key fob. I'm probably in the minority there, but I only carry/use the key card, so I never have a fob handy and always have my phone. The new system does work from the keyfob by clicking the lock button three times, which I expect to never use, but might really be handy for others.

Thanks @four .
I was looking at a different model of the same brand. I've just been putting it off because it wasn't urgent for me yet....but this review definitely encourages me to go ahead and schedule an install.

Isn’t the initial free service for 3 years?

Hrm, I got my 2018 in 2017, and I feel like I was paying earlier than 2020, but maybe you're right and I'm thinking of the XM. If that's the case I don't feel as bad about paying the $200/year for genesis services for only two years before making this switch. Clearly the free option is the better one so long as it lasts.
