  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Not sure if this was addressed in another post and if yes, accept my apologies.

The mystery about transmission hard shift is finally revealed.

Hyundai issued a TSB for HARSH 2~3, 3~4 OR 4~5 UPSHIFT back in November 2021.

The culprits are two solenoids which Hyundai upgraded and they need to be installed instead of the old ones.

The bulletin describes the procedure to replace the 35R and 4&OD solenoids for as shift flare and/or harsh shift during the 2~3, 3~4 or 4~5 upshift.

Attached is the TSB copy which illustrates the part numbers.

Good luck.

Husam.

Thanks, I've begun to notice this as well. I'm at 100k miles and changed the trans fluid at 50k and thinking about changing it again along with the pan. Think I'm going to do this as well.

Is this just an inconvenience or if left can it cause damage?

If left, proper hydraulic pressure won't hit the clutch packs and may eventually cause damage
Wonderful. I've not had any super hard shifts, but some that are rough.

Changing fluid & filter helped mine out a LOT! I was getting some weird upshifts and occasionally harsh downshifts. After the change the difference is almost night & day...! I believe that this transmission is really sensitive to the cleanliness of fluid & it's condition. Whatever you do, don't let anyone flush it, just drain & refill. My indie mechanic said he got 6 quarts out of mine.

Why would flushing it be bad?

Just curious as I'm coming up on 60k miles and I know that's the recommended service interval for the transmission fluid.

It forces debris from the transpan back into the narrow fluid channels and solenoids. Hence, you block up the transmission. Empty the fluid, remove and clean the transpan, re-attach the pan and fill with fluid.

Let's just assume debris had gotten into the narrow channels somehow, how could this be cleaned?

Thanks man
Let's just say they might be able to clear it, and they may not. There are posts on this in the First Gen posts. Needless to say, don't flush your transmission. It is a precision part that requires a delicate hand. Debris collects on the pan magnets for a reason.

Has anyone gotten this TSB done at the dealer/mechanic? Wondering what the cost for it would be.

When I got my Genesis (2.5 yrs ago), it was already hard shifting at 1-2 and 5-6.
Got in touch with the local dealer and they replaced the whole transmission.
Zero cost to me, Hyundai covered the cost - no questions asked.
I think this is a known issue to Hyundai.

What was the mileage on your car when you replaced the transmission and what is it now?

It was ~71K kms when it was replaced.
Now I am at 123K kms.

Did you take your car to the same dealer you bought it from or a different one and was your car still under warranty to cover it? Having the same problem on my 2017 Genesis G80 5.0 Ultimate and worried my dealer will give me a hard time over it.

Is it safe to assume this condition, if it diagnosed is fixed by the dealers under the 10 year 100k power train warranty? Or is it "sorry it's just routine maintenance item"

If the symptoms exist, then it is safe to assume this fix if a transmission fluid drain and fill does not fix it first. As the warranty is still still active, the dealer could go all the way in such assumptions to the extent of replacing the whole transmission.

I am currently in this process with my dealer, after their diagnoses, they agreed that a transmission replacement would be the fix. The manufacturer approved the part order however, the warranty department is refusing to approve the repair to take place. They have had my car for 2 weeks now with no updates other than what I've written here.
