  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

mostly OK. You may want to check for a local rebuild shop too. Often equal or better at lower price.

I replaced mine last year with an AutoZone alternator, not issues thus far...it seems to be good quality, unlike some of the parts they sell.

Dont, just dont....buy OEM used on ebay...I bought an aftermarket from auto zone...unlesss you can fix it by yourself the labor for taking it off and putting it on is what will kill you.

I am an older type mechanic. I grew up when Chrysler introduced the first 30 amp alternator.
Today these newer alternators are completely different creatures. Is there any good information, good sources of information on the 2014 and later Genesis in terms of explanation of operation, theory , etc ?

I have been reading that these alternators can shut off while accelerating, turn back on when coasting, and that would make even accurately diagnosing them difficult !

That to me seems like a bad alternator. an Alternator need to be on all the time for your power steering, at least for my car it is, if your alternator die, you will surely know because its hard to turn your steering wheel. Once your alternator die, you have maybe 30 min (?) before the battery die, but symptom pops up when it is dying...e.i battery on your dashboard (even though you have a new battery) this is why I say go with OEM used alternator rather than buying one at an autozone. If youre rich then go to dealership and buy it brand new there, about 300-400 a pop. I got a used OEM 30k miles for 50 bucks on ebay.

Lots of cars now turn the alternator off and on to improve gas mileage. They keep up with the battery capacity, battery charge level, and power needs of the car. If the battery is charged enough, then the alternator is turned off except when the car is coasting. If the battery charge falls lower than a set level, then the alternator is allowed to run all the time, till the charge level is back above that certain threshold. This is not a fault, it's how it now works. (I don't particularly like this, but I do know that it is being done.)

I put on an AutoZone alternator myself about a year ago. All is well. Alternators are not complicated at all - very simple process of what they do
AutoZone is nice for the warranty and I spent about $180 on the new one vs $700 at the dealership. Granted it took me a few hours to replace it
Just deepens on if you like to DIY or not -
And I have no idea what Shadypanda is saying............................

Perhaps I dont know what an alternator does, but I experience an alternator failure and I experience that shitty duralast alternator autozone sells you. If my used alternator failed, I'm out 50 bucks, but I'm willing to bet it will last me more than 100k as my OEM did.

I am pretty familiar with the aftermarket. In general I am not that hard with most aftermarket suppliers.

One third of the time, it is the back yard mechanic that screws things up: Forcing things, breaking polarity rules, prying where prying is not allowed, and so on.

Consumers are famous for having serious electrical problems including shorts and constant drain problems that have never been properly troubleshot by a good mechanic or commercial electrical shop, and blaming run down batteries on BOTH the batteries and the alternators.

I am saying that I just don't see a really bad record on manufactured aftermarket products. I am a little cautious today, because for the first time we have alternators controlled by the car's main computer or CPU. Yet if replacement alternators by major companies have THAT cpu they should work correctly.

Many years ago I worked for a year in a BMW dealership that also sold the Volkswagen Rabbit. They had a private meeting with all the mechanics. They had like a 14% return rate on ''defective'' Rabbit and BMW high output 50 amp alternators.

Problem was that when they bench tested each one, back at Volkswagen, each one produced 50 amperes of current under normal loads, i.e. normal values !

So what was the problem ? Answer: under trained, uneducated, inexperienced workers (wannabe American mechanics) who did not know how to test properly for current and voltage, and seeing ANOTHER ELECTRICAL PROBLEM, dead battery, (typically a constant 1/2 - 2 amp slow short) did not know how to locate and diagnose them, and so to get paid and move on, replaced an alternator that was not the problem in the first place.

I worked initially before becoming a professional career hvac technician, as an auto mechanic.

Some cars have been doing this since at least 2000...

Changed my alternator, now my charge light comes on, just found out that the alternator that is needed is the one that says OEM.

It doesn't need to be OEM. You might need to check to make sure your new alternator is putting out the correct voltage and amperage.

My replacement is a Bosch - no problems.

Went through 2 non-OEM alternators, chasing electronic problems for years. OEM fixed all issues.

Curious, were they new or rebuilt?

In the past I was able to take my alternator to a local shop and have them rebuilt with new bearings. Of course, that was in the days where the most sophisticated electronics was and AM/FM radio, not like today.
