  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Connected Services going away in December 2022

Yeah I got the email. This is some serious BS not offering an upgrade path for those with 3G, they just say too bad and if you paid for a year then no $$ back?
Of course you should get a refund of any unused portion of your prepaid subscription.
Were you told otherwise?

Sure you would get money back. In my case I did not renew and was not offered a year.

Do you have an upgrade path? Kill the integrated modem and add the new one? Sounds simple but I image there is more to it than just plug in a circuit board.

Guys, it would be up to the manufacturer of the head unit if they were going to provide an upgrade for the system. Not up to Genesis. Although Genesis could possibly replace the head units if there is a newer one with 4G LTE. Has to be the same form factor to replace your current unit. Also, this would be cost prohibited for Genesis to do. Head units are not cheap.

It would be nice if they offered us the option to upgrade for a price. The 2020 models have the same screen size so form, fit, function shouldn’t be a problem.

Yes but price will be the problem. New head unit, parts and labor.

Right, just swap out that $3500 head unit Labor can't be more than a couple of hours.

I dumped all GM Onstar and Genesis services when the trial subscription expired. Still a great car.

Just stumbled upon this thread after getting the email to renew (services expire 12/11/22). When I bought the car used in Sept '21, my head unit was bad(wouldn't connect) and they replaced with a new one which changed the appearance. I also never got the email saying it was being disconnected in Dec. Gonna check the settings today to see if I need to even bother trying to renew. I just need to have the remote start feature. And how STUPID to not put that on the fob!!

You are much more understanding than I could ever be. I am confident Genesis could resolve the problem at a reasonable cost. Instead of Genesis developing a fix during the last couple of years they decided to blame telecom companies and just hang their customers out to dry.
Just thinking about the cell phone situation...besides the modem, there's also the antennas. 4G uses different radio spectra than 3G. So you'd probably have to update the antenna (antennas?) in the vehicles as well. I'm sure there's a solution, but whether it can be done at a reasonable cost is a different story.

Also, I don't know that I'd say anyone is really "defending" Genesis as much as they're acknowledging the reality of the situation: technology that isn't under their control has changed.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

LTE technology came out in 2010. The suppliers that make the head units should have started to integrate that technology by about 2012 in their units. Auto designs are finalized 2 to 4 years ahead of the model year so by 2016 it would be possible to put in the cars. Hindsight is easy.

As auto buyers and enthusiasts we are looking forward to the new changes in the 2014 models. Auto designers and engineers are finalizing the 2017. A couple of the companies I worked for suppled the suppliers to the auto industry and 4 years ahead was common to start projects. It was challenging to quote prices that far ahead too.

I contacted Hyundai Customer Care who although were very nice could not tell me if my car would stop working or not and advised me to get a map/software update from Mapnsoft - I call Mapnsoft and they also could not tell me if an update would work or not but it was only $25 plus shipping so I ordered it (software updates cannot solve hardware issues right?) I will post again after updating the system but will not really know till Jan 1 if this is some kinda fix. Really disappointed with their lack of knowledge even after supplying my VIN - fingers crossed lol

Yeah, there's no software fix for this. Also, you could have downloaded the update for free.
Do you have the 8" screen (may still work next year) or the 9.2" screen (no more Blue Link for you)?

Do note that we are only talking about Blue Link (Connected services). Everything on you car will still work, including navigation. You only stand to lose remote start, status, POI sending, and emergency response. If you haven't been paying monthly or yearly for those, then you already lost them and there will be no difference at all. Are they willing to sell you a year of connected services? If so, it should still work. If not, then they already know that you are 3G only.

Yeah I have the 9.2 and am paid up for Bluelink till next September...so maybe there's hope haha. I tried updating for free but did not work so I ordered it. I use remote start many times a day so if it stops working I will look for 3rd party options.

I went on their Connected Care website and was able to enter in my VIN. Told me I was not affected by the change (recieved new head unit Sept 2021). It does give options on what you can do if you are affected.

I have seen quite a few posts that indicate nothing in the car is affected without connected services. This is mostly accurate, but with several exceptions that I wanted to point out with possible workarounds to help all that are navigating this issue.

The car's more advanced voice recognition appears to be tied in with connected services. Therefore, the car's built-in SMS voice to text recognition to respond to text messages while driving is disabled (or requests to call someone from your contacts). Additionally, the voice recognition to provide voice commands to the built in navigation also do not work without connected services. Essentially, some of the more advanced voice controls cease to operate without connected services.

The workaround is to use Android Auto or Car Play. I am using the Motorola wireless solution with Android Auto to automatically connect to the car wirelessly and it seems to work well. This is more convenient to plugging in your phone each time and you will find the voice responsiveness to be better than the built-in car capabilities anyway. You can long press the talk button on the steering column to invoke your Siri or Google assistant to sent SMS, set navigation (with or without addresses), etc. regardless if you have the screen up or on any other page on your screen.

Incidently, I am paying around $500 to $600 to get the remote car starter installed that includes setting the rear defrost and front seat warmers via mobile app or three press on the OEM remote. I am losing several features and gaining a few. Not the best, but I estimate a break even solution to what the car offered from the factory. Your mileage may vary.

There is at least one thread here about remote starters. Plan to spend $300 to $600 depending on features. Search for it and you will get ideas.

Frankly, wish I did it sooner as my Compustar works faster and more reliably than the connected services. Only think I miss is the send to car feature for the navigation.

Actually they said they would refund the unused portion of the subscription

I agree. I usually use drone mobile to start mine, but it's almost as instant as the fob.
To be honest, I was looking at 3rd party solutions before this even became an issue.
I use Android Auto the majority of the time, so send to car isn't an issue for me.

So why did you say:

Dramatic effect or you just wanted to add your own serios BS?

Notice the question mark regarding the refund...no added drama. Check this out...I don't want a refund, I want the car I bought to work for over 6 years...not too much to ask. Offer an upgrade at the very least. Then when I contacted customer care they give me a bs option to upgrade software when they fully know this will not fix the issue.
Just seriously dissatisfied with Hyundai and Genesis. My car has the full "tech" option and they put a 3g radio to what...save money.
